R&b artist LaMarr "Deuce" Lubin who was signed to Capitol Records with the hot r&b group Dirty Rotten Skoundrels (D.R.S.) in 1993 -94 is hit hard by the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. This horrible news brought the soul singer to reflect on similar experiences of a friend who had been killed.
Deuce Lubin writes a very heart-felt letter to Trayvon's parents dedicating, "Gangsta Lean" to Trayvon and those that have been unnecessarily murdered.
Read letter below:
A letter to Trayvon Martin's Parents:
As I sit here listening to the news , looking at my emails and reading facebook about your tragic son's death I can't help but remember my song "Gangsta Lean (This is for my Homies)" which my group DRS made back in 93-94. I remember us making the song because a dear friend had been killed and we didn't have an outlet to express how we felt. At that time my friend was looked at as a hoodlum, gang banger, some one that society would say was not a productive citizen because of the style of clothes he wore, but that was far from the truth. Although my friend was young he had accomplished a lot in his young life. He had been a youth counselor, karate instructor for underprivileged youth and just a nice guy that old and young alike had respected and liked. But because he had dressed a certain way he had been mis judged by people that never got to know who he really was. So we thought writing this song would not only honor our friend but also bring a change so people would see that no matter what a person does, say or live they are someones Homie, Loved one, Son, Daughter, Friend, Father, Mother and Human Being.
Now thinking about your son's death I realize that nothing has changed. People are still being judged based on there race and there clothing. How crazy is that. I truly understand because I myself was pulled over recently because I was driving a Cadillac with a Louie Vuitton beanie and a matching scarf and was stopped and handcuffed put in the back of the car and when I asked why I was told that I was bigger than him and could cause him harm although he was the one with the gun. So I applaud you for your vigilance and your steadfastness for fighting for your son and making sure that his killing didn't fall through the cracks. Too many times have minorities been profiled and for the wrong reason. Walking through a neighborhood wearing a hoodie and being an African American youth should not be a reason for some one following you and ultimately shooting you to death.
So I want you to know that I will dedicate my song to your son forever and those that are killed unnecessarily. His death has also spurred me to get back into doing my music and writing music about the injustices of the this world. I just want to send out some love and peace to you and your family and to let you know that you are in my prayers and I pray that God send you some comfort in knowing that we the world stand with you and that the beautiful child that you brought into this world will never I mean never be forgotten, so I say Trayvon Martin "go ahead and rest in that gangsta lean" cause "This is for my homie."
Sincerely,
LaMarr "Deuce" Lubin

LAMARR 'DEUCE' LUBIN: Soul singer with the 'Gangsta Lean' sets pace for
success.
-- by Kenya M Yarbrough
*LaMarr 'Deuce' Lubin is back. You didn't notice he'd been gone? No
matter, you will notice his return. The singer who started out as the
co-founder and lead singer of the group DRS has redeveloped his soul
music and his soul.
Lubin and crew had a huge hit in 1993-94 called "Gangsta Lean
(This Is For My Homies)," an R&B fallen gangsta tribute. Additionally,
Lubin was a featured singer in the all-star chorus on the track "You
Will Know" on the "Jason's Lyric" soundtrack.
The group started out with the option of signing with Eazy-E, Suge
Knight, or MC Hammer. They decided to go with the non-gangster - Hammer,
but Lubin explained that Hammer turned out to be a gangster of sorts
himself, sometimes not paying the group.
"And when MC Hammer went bankrupt, it kind of threw my group into
disarray. After that happened, we were stuck on the label and we were
really not doing anything. I got frustrated, then I went to Japan for a
year. I came back and felt like maybe the music industry was not for me
and so I got a job working for the phone company. But the love of music
was always in me."
Lubin confessed that part of his departure from music was deeper
than just being frustrated that his group sitting on the shelf. Lubin
told EUR's Lee Bailey that he struggled with forgiving Hammer and that
is what really led to his music sabbatical.
"I blamed him for me not being in the industry and me not making
another record because what happened to his empire, and it affected me,"
he said. "I really admired him. He was always nice to us. But what
happened to him was that the industry did him in and he didn't know what
to do. He had a set course and he should have stayed on that set course
and shouldn't have strayed."
However, Lubin learned that "if you hold a lot of grudges in your
heart, you'll never get to step B" and with the encouragement of his
aunt, the legendary blues singer and Tony Award winner Linda Hopkins, he
picked himself up and got back to the music.
"She kind of molded me and said, 'You really need to start opening
up; don't just do R&B music. People want to hear you,'" he said of his
aunt's encouragement. "So I started doing live shows. It was like
2000-2001 and I decided to get back on stage and start doing this for
real."
Now, Lubin is gaining momentum and a following as a solo artist and
a stage actor, as he's currently starring in "Benches: Sketches of the
1930s" in Los Angeles.
"I've been doing my live shows and I've been getting a lot of
interest for a couple of songs that I have on my website. They are true
old-school R&B songs."
The self-described "old-school performer" who can not only sing
R&B, but gospel, jazz, and opera, has a few plans for contemporary R&B.
"There's a difference between a studio artist and being an all
around triple threat artist where you can get in the studio, you can do
a play, or you can do a live show," he said. "I love a lot of today's
artists, but when I go to the shows, I don't hear the song that I heard
on the radio. They can't sing the song like they did on the radio.
That's what I want to hear."
Lubin, like many, is not impressed by big dance numbers of big
artists.
"I don't mind you dancing," he said, "but I don't want to see a
show with just dance. I want to hear you sing, I want to hear the notes,
I want you to entertain me, not just dance. Otherwise, I'll just go to
the ballet. I'm the type of singer that with me, you're going to get a
show. I put my heart and my soul into it and that's what I really want
the industry to get back to - the heart and soul of it. I mean, I want
to make money, of course. I don't want to be a broke artist, but I also
want to get out there - like Luther [Vandross]."
Lubin explained that the late soul legend Vandross wasn't often
concerned about a record hitting with a millions sold upfront.
"He didn't trip off of selling 10, 20 million albums. He felt if
he sold a mil or two that was fine, because he knew that he would have
20 or 30 million sold in ten years," Lubin said. "He's no longer here,
but people are listening to his music today. That's the kind of artist I
want to be. I want to be the type of artist that can still sing my
songs, for one, and people will listen to it and continue to buy it."
So the singer is building up his repertoire and his fan base and
amassing a songwriting crew and producers to create a very well-rounded
album with the hopes to give everyone what they want, and enjoy it
himself, too.
"This time I know the type of music I want to do. This time I
won't let a record company tell me, 'Well, you have to do this, you have
to do that, you have to look this way," he said of his independent turn.
"I know what I want to do, I know where I want my career to go."
