The hard-hitting guitar-driven song sounds like The Artic Monkeys and Muse backed up Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless. “After the success of our last single We Are Love, that was a ballad, we wanted to get back to our aggressive roots.” Says Anthony Casuccio, the Grammy nominated engineer who is the production force behind A&L. So Sorry channels the anger and realization that you are being played by a new lover. Lana Marie delivers a blistering vocal performance on So Sorry. Her powerful performance is a call to action and a warning to all players out there: “You break my heart, you better sleep with one eye open.” You screwed with the wrong woman. The cutting edge yet radio friendly song is set to be a summer favorite.

After topping the European charts this winter, A&L is back with their 6th single – Living the Dream, a Pop/Punk radio-friendly track. “We have seen a lot of division and vitriol lately.” say Anthony Casuccio. “This track stands as a referendum/response against the angst.” You can be knocked down and talked down too, but living well is the best revenge.” What you hear, is what was performed in the studio. Everything was done in very few takes. Living the Dream has very little overdubs or audio processing. “This is another Casuccio written song that will get you singing along” Says Lana Marie. This song is a melding of pop vocals with Punk rock guitar tones. “The bridge channels my Shoegaze days.” says Casuccio. “There are a few synth tracks that could be found on a Top 40 EDM track buried within the mix.” Contributing to the track is drummer Rich Smith who has played on the previous three releases and Matt Sunick who nailed the bass part on his first take in the studio.

Thanks for taking the time to do this interview A&L. Tell us a bit about yourselves, your names, ages, where you’re from and an interesting fact if you like...
Lana Marie, Anthony Casuccio. We are both from Buffalo NY.

Anthony: I grew up in Amherst NY. For me it was hearing the The Beatles then Van Halen. I was hit by the songwriting and the fame. I thought it was so cool. But I was more interested in the technical aspects of recording and songwriting. That led me to getting into recording production. I have been fortunate to have worked on some amazing projects. But I have always worked on original music.

Lana: I grew up in Buffalo NY, I had a big family; sisters 1 brother. I remember anywhere we went I always needed to standout and get the attention. In school I tried out for numerous musicals and in 7th grade I was the lion in the Wizard of Oz. In 9th grade I wrote my first song and had a friend in the musical with me play it on piano and we got a standing ovation. I knew right there that’s what I wanted to do; entertain and sing.

Is there a story behind your name?
No real story here, we just took our first initial. It sounded good, so we stuck with it.

What/who inspires your music?
Anthony: I am a huge Beatles freak. I also grew up listening to pro/rock like Rush and Triumph. They are Canadian but huge in western NY.

Lana: I loved Janis Joplin and grew up listening to Ann Wilson from Heart and Pat Benetar. You can kind of hear their influences in my singing style.

What one tip would you give to other aspiring independent artists?
We would both say, never give up. Give it 100 percent! This is a crazy business and you need to commit or it is just a hobby. What are you going to do that the other 100 bands in your home town are not already doing? Are you going to work harder than they are?

Do you feel like the internet is helping you as an independent artist?
It’s helping and hurting. It is levelling the playing field with distribution. But you are a needle in a hay stack. You need to work social media and use traditional media to get noticed. You need to build fans by playing out and making videos. Make yourself accessible.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

The duo also maintains a high energy sound without ever sounding infantile, trite or bubble gummy. Listening to and genuinely enjoying any music by A&L does not require a compromise of one’s intellectual capacities either. How many bands do you know that can deliver jagged rhythms, soaring vocals, collapsing melodies, unique musical settings, and harmonies that go from liquid to strident before you can say “Cliché”.

By and large, Anthony Casuccio and Lana Marie hit a really neat balance between production extremes, gritty guitar riffs, and some really solid pop inflections. The result is an addictive and extremely playable recording that can be repeated again and again: it’s spunky, stylish, and it has enough of an edge to let you know that this really is A&L.

I’m not sure if this is the perfect summer track to blast with the hood down, but its damn near close as can be…and that’s not meant to be a cliché either!
