CHUCK FLOWERS: UP CLOSE & PERSONAL (REVIEW)
OCTOBER 23, 2017 KAISERRIFIC
Last night I went out to check out my good friend singer Chuck Flowers at BB’s Jazz, Blues & Soup on 700 S. Broadway right in downtown St. Louis. I didn’t get a chance to order any food but it smelled so good. I will be returning to grab a bite to eat and check out another fabulous show there. This beautiful establishment held down one of the coolest sets in St. Louis Chuck Flowers: Up Close and Personal. I had the most amazing time ever. As always I am proud of being an artist. But after seeing what Chuck does onstage made me even more proud. As a matter of fact, I left the restaurant inspired. I am a young man with an old soul when it come such things like music. Chuck Flowers has proven many times before and even tonight that great music never dies. The soundtrack to everyone’s lives as it was once said. It lives through us and it’s the biggest influence to any race’s culture.
I got to hear songs sung by Chuck that in my opinion that were greater than hearing it from the original artist. In last night’s show, Chuck sang a variety of cover songs from Motown to his personal favorite Donny Hathaway and even artist like Rahsaan Patterson to closing out with Love and Happiness by Al Green. The musicians that accompanied Chuck tonight were on phenomenal. I couldn’t keep my eyes off them, their masters with those instruments. On the uptight bass, Darrell Mixon, got the groove going with the audience especially when he slapped the bass. On the acoustic guitar, Leland Crenshaw was plucking away at the strings of his guitar. When we talked during a break he said he’s just having fun. He made it look very fun. On percussion, David A.N. Jackson who killed it playing both the congas and this scarf with percussion sound simply amazing.
This show was a great experience that I got to see people of all ages and races come together for a good time. As in every aspect music brings people together and I cannot forget this. One of the many reasons I love being an artist because if not just our talent that does it’s our heart that will. Chuck alone being a long time performer in the both music and theater had the crowd going. Every song that Chuck sang, the audience knew and loved. One of the highlights of the night was when Chuck brought up his long friend and special guest singer Kim Fuller-Barnes it was absolutely magical. When Kim started singing it was like sweet lullabies to my ears. It was such a great pleasure to see and hear her do her thing. I admit that I didn’t know all the songs that Kim sang but I became a fan immediately. But got me was the cover of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough that Kim and Chuck did that was great. In all right appreciates that talents of both Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell that made the song a hit in 1967.
Normally I don’t really interact in the audience unless otherwise. But last night I found myself in the audience snapping and clapping even singing along with Chuck on several songs. Chuck covered Donny Hathaway’s The Ghetto and Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler). I am telling you I’d seen myself as the guy in the movies grooving to songs. I was singing every line to both songs as if I had written them myself. He gave the fellas to the part to sing the ghetto and the ladies another part to come behind us. I was singing and clapping the whole time something you don’t see every day from me.
In my overall review of this show of Up Close & Personal, Chuck Flowers did an outstanding job. He bought people together for one night using his number one weapon, music. As always the power of music will have you on your feet. Everybody was up on their feet dancing, singing, and clapping to where it was not one dull moment throughout this show. This was one of the best times in my life in a long time. I seen the hard work and dedication put into this show from how Chuck was very passionate about what he does.
During the break and after the show Chuck came and greeted everyone. I must say this was great experience for me. I am watching from the audience taking notes and learning from the greats that live right here in my own city. I want to thank Chuck Flowers for inviting me out to a great show. I will be returning to get another dose and another dose. If you’re on social media Facebook search for Chuck Flowers and follow him. Let’s continue to support our artist right here in our own city.

Since I’m on the subject of holiday shows, I might as well remind y’all that the STL all-star benefit concert that will give back for the Christmas season was postponed because of that crazy weather last week – and I’m so glad it was. But A Very Soulful Christmas Benefit Concert is going down this Sunday (Dec. 15) at Lola and 100% of proceeds to benefit Gateway 180 - A valuable resource for homeless women and children .(http://www.gateway180.org/). Festivities will be hosted by Will Robinson and the talent roster includes, Tish Haynes – Keys, Chuck Flowers, Tiffany Elle, TBII, Olivia Neal, C. Jay Conrod, Karla White, Justin Hoskin, Kelvin Saxman Evans, Giovanni, Stephanie Songbird Ivy & Jason Gupton. I’m going to claim in advance that it will be the most EPIC midday musical experience that one could imagine. There is a $15 donation ($10 with an unwrapped toy), but know you are going to leave with at least your money’s worth as you pay forward to a great cause just in time for the holidays.
A Very Soul Christmas scheduled for Thursday night at Lola has been postponed because of the expected sleet and snow.
The show, featuring a lengthy lineup of St. Louis R&B singers, will now take place at 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Dec. 15.
Performing at the special holiday event are Tish Haynes-Keys, Chuck Flowers, Tiffany Elle, TBII, Olivia Neal, C. Jay Conrod, Karla L. White, Justin Hoskin, Kelvin Saxman Evans, Giovanni, and Stephanie Songbird Ivy & Jason Gupton.

Says Angela Brown, co-founder of Cafe Soul, "the singers, musicians and venue jumped on board with no hesitation to support the cause and hopefully with the community's support, we can be a vehicle in reversing homelessness."

A look at a singing sensation: Chuck Flowers hits the right notes for St. Louis
I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and shoot the breeze with a very busy young man of the bustling St. Louis music scene. Chuck Flowers, a man of many songs, a man who has traveled the world to get his rhapsodies across.
So, tell me more about your music? Chuck: My music is quite eclectic. I sing everything pretty much from different genres. I love jazz standards, show tunes, R&B, pop, blues, funk, neo/classic soul, rock.
How many members in your band? Chuck: I am the headliner, a solo artist.
What inspired you to become a singer? Chuck: The music my aunt laid on me at an early age. Artist(s) you know by first names like: Aretha, Donny, Ella, Nat, Dinah, Sarah, Chaka, Stevie, Gladys, Ray, Peabo.....the last names will hit you, (lol).
Is there a special person in Chuck's life, a muse for your voice? Chuck: Presently, no..
What do you think the fans expect from your shows? Chuck: My comical gift of gab, (lol). And uh, just me being me, doing the songs I love, connecting with the audience, and audience participation, spontaneous collaborations with singers that show up.
What is the best venue to perform at? Chuck: You know what? I haven't played at the best venue yet. I'm wanting to get to The Rustic Goat, Troy’s Jazz Gallery and intimate venues.
Tell me about your life and family? Chuck: Well I was born & raised here in St. Louis. I had grandparents in the house who’ve helped raise me and my sister. My parents divorced, but both were always present in my life-and very supportive. Aunts, uncles and extended family who’d instilled values that I keep with me today. My aunt Jewel (RIP), played music sun up to sun down! I loved her. I loved old music.
Name 5 great musicians that you would love to collaborate with? Chuck: Anthony David, Patti Austin, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder
Why doesn't St. Louis Musicians get more support like acts in other major city? Chuck: Hard to say but this is my opinion. There are some artists that get support more than others. Support everybody!
Tell me about Chuck Flowers? Chuck: Singer/Entertainer/Comic Relief; an original member of the ensemble for Tell Me Somethin' Good, Flowers appeared in the Black Rep's Father's Day concerts, Songs From The Core, as well as in the company's productions of Dream Girls, Damn Yankees, The Gospel At Colonus, Black Nativity, Crossing Over, Dressin' Up, Steppin' Out and Gettin' Down, Black Nativity.
He has toured both nationally and internationally(2 European tours-Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, France) with the Golden Gospel Singers. He also toured nationally with the production, Looking For Mr. Do-Right, where he shared the stage with Peabo Bryson, Deniece Williams, Morris Day, Dave Hollister and Cherelle.
Flowers has performed with Barry Manilow, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Bolton and Oleta Adams. He has recorded with the Gospel Symphonic Choir, The O'Neal Twins & the Interfaith Choir and the Golden Gospel Singers. In addition to that he performed in Porgy and Bess with Union Avenue Opera Theater.
He has sung with Denise Thimes, Kim Massie, Mystic Voyage, Galaxy and Gordon Alt and the Alteration Band. Other theater performances with UTE/Unity Theater Ensemble-Sparkle, The Motown Revue, The Cotton Club Revue, I Got the Music in Me and Everything Must Change. Liberty Playhouse- Rhapsody in Blues.
He was hand-picked for a production entitled The Revelation by Grammy Award nominee, Michael O'Hara(popular songwriter, Just Because by Anita Baker). Chuck continues to work his craft and develop his own act. He sings all types of music, whether it's Jazz, R & B, Pop, Showtunes, Neosoul, etc., you will surely enjoy a Chuck Flowers performance! He's quite a singer.
And that you are, I would like to thanks you for this great story. I wish you the best in your musical career.
Chuck: Thanks to you, I appreciate the opportunity.
