Born on December 10, 1990 in Varoda, India and raised in Philadelphia since 1992, Chirag Parikh has never been a stranger to making music. Interestingly, before starting his EDM DJ career under the moniker DJ CYROC, Chirag learned to play the flute as a child – his first musical instrument. This first talent was perhaps a precursor to what was to come of his connection to music.
As he grew up, his flute playing took a back seat to dance, which propelled his passion for music even more. His path was set. Musical self-expression became a part of him. First, culturally through the Indian dance style of Bollywood theater, and more influentially, through hip-hop dance. Philadelphia, with its very influential hip-hop scene was home to a growing dance culture during Chirag’s high school years, when his passion for all genres and styles of music and dance ran parallel. At this point, he knew music would begin to play a large role in his life.
On a night in July 2012 during a vacation in California, Chirag would be in attendance at the world renowned Playhouse Nightclub in the heart of Hollywood. That night, EDM DJs Sunnerary James and Ryan Marciano were on the ones and twos, changing the young man we now know as DJ CYROC’s life forever. Reflecting on the experience, Chirag describes the indescribable feeling that EDM introduced into his life, and that simply, “[James and Marciano] made me realize that I wanted to be that guy behind the turntables, hopefully doing for others with my music what they did for me.”
From the day he got his first Pioneer CDJ turntable set, CYROC has spent countless nights honing his DJ skills until the break of dawn. His first paid performance being a modest bar gig at Taste of Asia in Southwest Philly, CYROC began spinning at more and more events, getting better each time. In February 2013, CYROC headlined a show for the first time at Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia, on the same stage that EDM powerhouses such as Axwell, Alesso, and Hardwell have performed. From that point on, the mission became clear.
In March 2013, the EDM promotional group illadef was formed as a homegrown movement to help Chirag towards his dream. Now surrounded by a supporting cast of friends with the same goal, DJ CYROC and illadef are ready to push the CYROC name high up and beyond the exponentially growing Philadelphia EDM scene in the years to come.
