Charlie Chase, The First Latino DJ in Hip Hop to officially emerge and establish Latinos as a force to the masses in Hip Hop. Born in New York City, he was raised in Williamsburg Brooklyn until the age of 12, and then moved to the Bronx where He became a musician and a true Hip Hop Pioneer in 1975. Despite a lot of negative criticism from Blacks and Hispanics back then for Being a Puerto Rican DJ playing Hip Hop Music, Charlie Played in the streets, parks, clubs and schools of New York City with other pioneers such as Kool Herc, Afrika Bambbatta, Grand Wizard Theodore, Grandmaster Flash and so many others, and became a force to be reckoned with. Entertaining the masses and representing Latinos everywhere by playing and mixing everything from Hip Hop, Salsa, R&B, House, Disco and Rock was how he gained respect as a Dj and how he stayed focused on his music.
Charlie then co-founded the "World Famous Cold Crush Brothers" with his partner Tony Tone. Together they recruited Grandmaster Caz, Hut Maker JDL, Almighty KG and Easy AD, thus becoming one of the primary influences immulated by many successful DJ's, MC's and Rappers in Hip Hop to this day. The Cold Crush Brothers were especially known for their memorable routines that included harmonies, melodies and stage-stomping performances. They set the standard for emceeing. Charlie and The Cold Crush Brothers were such an influence and in such demand by their fans that they toured all five boroughs of New York The Tri-state area and as far as Boston even before commercially releasing records. Their popularity was strengthened by the sale of their live performances that were recorded on cassette by Tape Master (Elvis Moreno). These shows were taped and distributed worldwide via word-of-mouth promotion. They became known as the Rolling Stones of hip hop. Because of the attention they began to attract, many groups would try to battle them to gain street credibility and for hip hop supremacy. This would lead to a fierce and well-known rivalry with The Fantastic Five, culminating in a lyrical battle between the groups on July 3, 1981. When Charlie and the group began to release records commercially, the first single the group dropped was titled "Weekend" on Elite Records. It was a party and dance record that described ways to have fun on the weekends. The second single was "Punk Rock Rap" on Tuff City Records and distributed by CBS. This was the first time an independent hip hop label and a major record company collaborated on a project together. "Punk Rock Rap" was the first recording produced by Charlie to fuse hip hop and rock together. The phrase, "Oh My God!" sampled on Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew's single, "The Show", came from "Punk Rock Rap". The most successful Cold Crush single to date is "Fresh, Wild, Fly & Bold", released in 1984, which sold 16,000 units in its first week of release which at that time was an achievement rarely attained by Hip Hop Artists. On this record, Charlie shows off his cutting skills that many people to this day say was ahead of its time. A distribution dispute between Tuff City Records and Profile Records hindered the sales of this single which had the most potential of reaching gold status.
In 1981 Charlie got his first movie roll playing himself in the first Hip Hop movie ever made. The Cult hit was titled “Wild Style”. Getting a small speaking part and performing with his group the The Cold Crush Brothers in the movie was the break he needed to take his talent all over, rocking Japan, Germany, Italy, England, Switzerland, China, France and many other countries, playing in some of the most famous clubs and arenas like The Roxy, Studio 54, Roseland, Madison Square Garden and more.
In The summer of 2004 Charlie Chase was asked by the New York Post to join several other Hispanic Dj's, Actors, Musicians, Singers, Radio Personalities, News Journalists, Supreme Court Judges, and other celebrities to pose together in a Photo titled " A great Day In Spanish Harlem". Celebrities like Jimmy Smitts, Rosie Perez, Geraldo Rivera, Chita Rivera, Tito Nieves, Fat Joe, Angie Martinez, Tony Touch, Crazy Legs, Pablo Guzman, Charlie Chase and so many others participated in what people say was a once in a lifetime Honor.
