A wonderful weekend of festivities honoring the memory of the late Ronnie James Dio came to a conclusion on Sunday (May 17) in the San Fernando Valley of the Los Angeles area with a motorcycle rally, barbecue and concert.
The day started with bikers lining up at the Harley-Davidson of Glendale and preparing to make the ride to Encino where a majority of the day’s festivities would take place at the Los Encinos Park. Lita Ford, Sean McNabb and Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund founder Wendy Dio were among those making the ride on a mostly overcast morning.
Upon entering the park, there were a number of vendors on hand, a merchandise area with proceeds from items sold going to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, an informational booth, food and drinks and a giant screen behind the concert stage showing Dio performances in between acts. There was also a fly-over held in Ronnie’s honor later in the afternoon. And in addition to the day’s performances, funds were raised through auctions of a signed Dio guitar featuring the signatures of many of those who appeared at the weekend’s events and a photo book that also featured a wealth of rock autographs. With just those two items alone, over $8,000 was raised for cancer research.
As for the performances, Others got the day off to a blistering start with a brief set. They were followed to the stage by Dio Disciples, who played the longest set of the day, rocking such standouts as “Holy Diver,” “Stand Up and Shout,” “The Last in Line,” “Long Live Rock and Roll,” “Man on the Silver Mountain” and the set-closing “Heaven and Hell.” The group, which sports such Dio alums as Craig Goldy, Simon Wright and Scott Warren, also features guitarist Bjorn Englen and the powerhouse vocal pairing of Joe Retta and Oni Logan. Retta and Logan trade off songs and occasionally share vocals, all while taking great care of Dio’s legacy. At the end of their set, the fans in attendance joined Logan in a “Dio, Dio, Dio” chant.
Unfortunately, Gabbie Rae’s appearance did not go off as planned as the vocalist was ailing, but Lita Ford, who was already on hand from the morning’s motorcycle rally, stepped up to fill the void. She put together an all-star lineup with her bassist Marty O’Brien and Dio‘s Rowan Robertson flanking her, while Vinny Appice sat in on drums for a rocking rendition of “Kiss Me Deadly.”
Shortly after, Hellion‘s Ann Boleyn took the stage with her own all-star lineup. Reprising her rendition of “Sign of the Southern Cross” that she performed a day earlier at the Ronnie James Dio public memorial, Boleyn powered through the track with Sean McNabb, Goldy, Warren and Vinny Appice sitting in.
The biggest name on the bill was rock vet Eddie Money, a longtime friend of Ronnie’s who delivered an energetic four-song set featuring “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “No Control,” “We Should Be Sleeping” and “Shakin’.” The rocker made it a family affair, as some of his kids served as members of his band. After the performance, Money told us, “You know Ronnie Dio and I, we go way back together. He’s one of my favorite singers — Black Sabbath, Rainbow. His wife and mine are very good friends. And this is great. They’ve raised over a million dollars for cancer.” And while Money’s music is more rock than metal, he did express his love for metal music and the community.
The vocalist added about the Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, “It’s a great organization and I really wanna thank everyone who took some money out of their pockets and I love that they’ve raise all this money … I just wish Ronnie was here. He would have loved this. He really would.”
Finishing out the day’s performances was DC4, the group featuring Armored Saint‘s Shawn, Jeff and Matt Duncan, along with Dio’s Rowan Robertson as they delivered a hard-hitting set.

The first 200 registered riders will receive a limited edition RIDE FOR RONNIE Challenge Coin! Participants will depart Glendale, traveling the freeways of the north San Fernando Valley, then down the 405 to a BBQ at Los Encinos Historical Park in Encino. The BBQ will feature great food and drink, live music by Dio Disciples, DC4, Gaby Rea and The Others, raffle prizes, live auction and much more!
The bowling tournament, you had a chance to do a trial run of it last fall.
Yes, with TJ Martel. Yes, we did. So we hope it’s as successful or more than that. And Jack Black has been very gracious. He’s going to be one of the bowlers. And Tom Morello, all kinds of people are gonna be bowling.
I know it’s a fundraiser and it’s also a good time for all involved, but have you discovered that any of these people are actually pretty serious bowlers?
(Laughs) Yeah, well Jack can. And Mark Ferrar, he won the title last year and he wants to keep his title.
And the Motorcycle Rally and barbecue…
Yeah, well that’s a first for us. We’re hoping that that will go well and if it does, we’ll make it an annual thing. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun. We’re starting off at Harley Davidson in Glendale and I’m riding on the back (laughs). Lita Ford‘s riding. Sean McNabb, a bunch of other celebrities are riding and we will ride from Glendale to Encino to the park and have a barbecue with live music. Eddie Money is gonna be performing, DC4, Dio Disciples, Gabbie Rae, a whole bunch of people will be performing. And we want this to be a celebration of Ronnie’s life, so it should be happy and it should be a celebration because Ronnie wouldn’t want us to be sad and I think this will be a fun thing for everyone to enjoy in the park.
You’ve worked with Ronnie for a long time and have been vital in some of the reissues as well. For you personally was there a favorite album or tour cycle Ronnie was involved in?
Obviously Holy Diver, because it was his first solo thing and we mortgaged our house to help pay for the record and we did a lot of things first hand. It was a very exciting time. And I think going back to Sabbath or Heaven and Hell, the last time was very exciting because I think it was meant to be. The book was closed. He had performed with them before and he had always said they were the best musicians he had ever worked with in his life. He enjoyed it so much. He had to keep up with Tony [Iommi] and Geezer [Butler] and Vinny [Appice] and they all played to make each other better. And this last time, everyone was so happy and everything was going so well. It was elation for us. It had come full circle and he was having such a good time with them.

Shawn will be out on the road this summer with BulletBoys.
First leg of the Tour starts on May 23rd at The Cave in Big Bear California with Stephen Pearcy's Ratt and wrap up in Irvine California August 15th at The Cathouse Live Festival at the Verison Ampitheater.
Saxon have put out twenty albums since forming in 1976, and while the set seamlessly mixed in newer material, it was classics like "The Bands Played On," "To Hell and Back Again," "Suzie Hold On," and "Wheels of Steel" that got heads banging the hardest. Byford and guitarist Paul Quinn founded the band, and the rhythm section has been with the band since the Eighties. The decades spent together have bred tightness, not apathy, and their two-guitar attack is now grander and more inspiring than ever.
While both the NWOBHM genre and the band have fared less well in the States than in England and Europe, Saxon's triumphant, melodic meat-and-potatoes metal still satisfies. A quick survey of their setlist, in fact, gives insight to just what the band and its fans are about: "I've Got to Rock (To Stay Alive)," "Never Surrender," and "Heavy Metal Thunder." That's it in a nutshell, and after encoring with the rousing chant-along "Denim & Leather," there wasn't a dry concert tee in the house.

Armored Saint in action at B.B. King's
Special guests Armored Saint, despite being from Los Angeles and a good many years younger than the headliners, were the perfect complement to Saxon, and it was clear many of the crowd were longtime Saint fans. Fronted by powerhouse vocalist John Bush — who sang for Anthrax starting in the early Nineties and did five great albums with the band — Saint kicked down a super-intense high-energy set with a mix of old favorites and new material from their upcoming Win Hands Down.
Kicking off their set with the title track from Win Hands Down, Saint's stellar, smart, modern metal shone, with fan favorites "March of the Saint," "Reign of Fire," and "Can You Deliver" inciting the crowd into a frenzy. Especially notable were "Pay Dirt," "Last Train Home," the new tune "Mess," and 1987's gem "Chemical Euphoria." But it wasn't chemicals that whipped the SRO crowd into euphoria on this evening: It was the joy and camaraderie felt from hearing and seeing old-school bands who remain vital, and their fans who remain loyal. Indeed, as Byford wrote/sang, spirits were set free — and they soared. \m/

BULLETBOYS are back and ready to tear the house down with first album of original material since 2009, "Elefanté", due on June 9 via Cleopatra/Deadline. According to a press release, "this long-awaited CD shows that the BULLETBOYS are unstoppable with their grinding hard rock. Singer Marq Torien's vocals hit every note with the power that is his trademark.
"Can't wait for our fans to hear this album," says Marq. "I put my heart and soul into this music. This album has sick peaks and valleys... it is NOT a linear album. A straight-out labor of love that I've dedicated to my amazing father, all of our families and our unfaltering BULLETBOYS fans and friends."
BULLETBOYS' current lineup consists of founding member Marq Torien (vocals/lead guitar), Nick Rozz (guitar), Chad MacDonald (bass) and Shawn Duncan (drums).
"Elefanté" was produced by Matt Thorne (TRAPT, DISTURBED) and Torien, and was engineered by Ryan Greene (ALICE COOPER, LITA FORD, CHEAP TRICK, USHER). It was mastered by Anthony Focx (MILEY CYRUS, AEROSMITH, SANTANA, BUCKCHERRY).
"Working with the BULLETBOYS was an amazing experience," says Greene.
"Most singers from back in the '80's were pretty good, but I will tell you, Marq knocked it out of the park on this record. His power and passion was second to none and he can sing in tune! No Auto-Tune needed; he's the real freakin' deal.
"If you think for a second this is going to be some rehashed '80s record, you are completely wrong!"
"Elefanté" track listing:
01. Rollover
02. Tsunami
03. Symphony
04. The Villain
05. Kin Folk
06. Saving You From Me
07. As Dumb As
08. Superhuman Girl
09. Drop Your Weapon
10. Bitch Is Back
11. Elefanté
BULLETBOYS will embark on a three-month headlining tour this summer.
"Feel like I'm gonna jump out my skin," says Marq. "Can't wait to take this on the road with the fellas!! All year!!! Hell yeah!!! Let's do this!"
BULLETBOYS was one of the prominent bands in the flourishing Hollywood metal scene during the late 1980s, with numerous smash hits such as "Smooth Up In Ya", "For The Love Of Money" and "Hang On St. Christopher" off the group's platinum-selling classic self-titled debut and follow-up, "Freakshow", dominating both MTV and radio airwaves.

Riki Rachtman's world-famous Cathouse will return to Southern California for one night of debauchery with Cathouse Live At Irvine Meadows, Saturday, August 15 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater (recently known as Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre) in Irvine, Califirnia.
Riki Rachtman created the original rock dance club that dominated the Hollywood scene from 1986 until1993. Now, along with Live Nation and Synergy Global Entertainment (SGE), he's bringing Cathouse Live to a much larger audience with this decadent music and lifestyle festival.
The initial music lineup for Cathouse Live features some of the defining rock artists of the '80s and '90s, including an all-star jam, plus:
EXTREME
TOM KEIFER
SEBASTIAN BACH
DOKKEN
FASTER PUSSYCAT
STEPHEN PEARCY
SAIGON KICK
GILBY CLARKE
DANGEROUS TOYS
L.A. GUNS
JUNKYARD
TRIXTER
AUTOGRAPH
BLACK 'N BLUE
TRACII GUNS
ENUFF Z' NUFF
BULLETBOYS
BANG TANGO
JETBOY
PRETTY BOY FLOYD
TUFF
LITTLE CAESAR
Cathouse Live will feature band performances on two stages, VIP meet-and-greets, a vendor village, a chopper motorcycle show, tattoo shops, go-go dancers, and more.
Said Rachtman: "I recently started a Cathouse Hollywood Facebook page and everyone was asking, 'Why don't you do another Cathouse?' I loved the idea and mentioned it on Twitter. So many bands told me that they wanted to be a part of it that I knew that I had to bring it back on a much larger scale. It was too big for a club, so we decided to do a festival."
He continued: "The music scene isn't what it was like back then — that type of decadence.
"We're going to bring the debauchery of the Cathouse back to Southern California!
"SoCal needs this kind of rock festival so people will have the chance to go out, have fun and enjoy a great rock show in all its excess.
"Cathouse was a very successful weekly nightclub for six years, so we're trying to pack all those years of Cathouse into one night for Cathouse Live. All I want is for those who go to have a good time and say, 'That was the BEST ROCK FESTIVAL EVER.'"
Tickets for Cathouse Live At Irvine Meadows go on sale Friday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. PT at www.CathouseLive.com and start at just $15 plus fees.
Aptly named Nothin' But A Good Time, Youth Gone Wild, Nobody Rides For Free, and Riki's Big Package, the Cathouse is coming out of the gate with a handful of exclusive experiences and VIP opportunities to get a front-row ticket, have a meet-and-greet and photo with the bands, be backstage in the dressing rooms, watch the show while standing on the main stage, and drink the night away in the Cathouse VIP lounge. All packages and experiences are available at www.CathouseLive.com while they last!
Stephen Pearcy of RATT says: "I remember the Cathouse very well… [I] used to go there when off the road with the RATT tours in the '80s. Anything and everything went down there. Great jams, good stories in my book about that place. Everybody was somebody or thought they were, and trashed. You knew you had a good time there when you couldn't remember what you did there the next day! Myself, Riki, Fred Coury, Tracii Guns, Taime and a couple others created a jam band called P.I.G. (PARTNERS IN GRIME). We only did a few shows, got a bus, went out and had a great time. Places like the Cathouse will never happen again. Those were the dayz."
The original Hollywood Cathouse was known for its edgy, underground, dirty rock 'n' roll vibe that was rooted in punk. It reeked of raunch and pure decadence. Patrons would freely indulge. The DJ played rock 'n' roll between unannounced performances from bands like GUNS N' ROSES (Cathouse regulars who performed live at the club in 1986 just before their debut record was released), Sebastian Bach, Stephen Pearcy, L.A. GUNS, FASTER PUSSYCAT, JUNKYARD, JETBOY, BANG TANGO, SAIGON KICK, BLACK 'N BLUE, LITTLE CAESAR, and many more. GUNS N' ROSES' video for "It's So Easy" was shot at the Cathouse, and Alice Cooper played the club one Halloween.
When Ice-T was banned from every Los Angeles club, Riki invited the rapper's band BODY COUNT to play Cathouse.
"It wouldn't be uncommon to see GUNS N' ROSES one week and ALICE IN CHAINS the next — so many bands played before they were huge," said Rachtman. "It was also the kind of place where you'd find Robert Downey Jr. rubbing elbows with AEROSMITH's Steven Tyler."
Cathouse was the place to discover the best rock 'n' roll. Ask anyone who ever went to Cathouse…they'll try to piece together what they remember about how legendary it was. With Cathouse Live At Irvine Meadows, the Cathouse is returning for those who lived the legend as it happened and those who are ready to experience this piece of rock 'n' roll history for the first time.
"Riki Rachtman is a great ambassador for a whole generation of hard rock," says Live Nation executive vice president Rich Best. "We're excited to partner with his iconic Cathouse brand to bring some of the biggest rock bands of the '80s and '90s together for this event. With over 20 bands that helped define an era with millions of records sold and dozens of hit songs, Cathouse Live at Irvine Meadows is a great value for fans."
Two lucky unsigned bands will have the chance to play at Cathouse Live at Irvine Meadows via the Cathouse Live Battle of the Bands, held Tuesday, July 14 at the infamous Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. The grand prize winner will open the main stage and the runner up — as chosen by celebrity rock judges — will open the second stage at Cathouse Live. Bands can apply for a chance to play the Cathouse Live Battle of the Bands by emailing mproductionsrocks@gmail.com between May 12 and July 1.
Los Angeles Times writer Kastle Waserman described Cathouse in her August 23, 2001 feature, noting: "On any given night, high-heeled, platinum blonds vied for attention on the dance floor. Aspiring rock musicians with impossibly teased hair crowded the bar and offered their standard pickup line: 'Come see my band play.' In VIP corners, rock notables mixed easily with Hollywood scenesters…Within weeks of its opening in the late 1980s, the Cathouse became 'world-famous,' L.A.'s place to be for rock 'n' roll kicks. A six-year run saw it evolve from a lightning-strike success into a legendary landmark…"

Now, Saxon is making another big announcement for this spring – the British heavy metal legends will embark on a nine-date U.S. tour, dubbed the “Warriors of the Road” tour, beginning in May. The run includes support from Armored Saint on most dates, and also includes select one-off dates with Judas Priest. The tour kicks off in New York City at BB Kings on May 12th and features a stop at Rock On The Range. The tour closes in Los Angeles, CA at the House of Blues on May 30th.
“We’re looking forward to the US tour in May,” states vocalist Biff Byford. “We’ll be playing some shows with the mighty Judas Priest and with Armored Saint. The last time we toured with them was 1981, I think. Rock On The Range looks like a great line up too – I can’t wait to get on stage and fill your heads with Heavy Metal Thunder! Bring it on!”
