IN THE BEGINNING…
D*LOC was hired in his early teens by Snoop Dogg and is the original drummer for the Snoopadelics. This lead to him becoming the Hip Hop Drummer/Percussionist of many of the West Coast classics and Death Row Records hits of the mid- to late 1990’s. He is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, music director, Grammy Award winning musician, and an icon in the drumming world.
At 5, the self-taught drummer played for churches throughout Long Beach and the greater Los Angeles area. Funk, Gospel, and Jazz artists influenced his music, including: Sly of Sly and the Family Stone, The Hawkins, Clyde Stubblefield, Gaylord Birch, Steve Gadd, James Brown, and his mentor and teacher–the incomparable, Joel Smith. His mastery and mature-beyond-his-years style in his early childhood led to his first gig with Miki Howard.
BORN IN THE GOSPEL…
His recording career started once he connected with Andrew Gouche, one of the most prolific music directors and bass players in Gospel music. From their partnership, D*LOC recorded albums and toured with Andrae Crouch, the L.A. Mass Choir, Daryl Coley, Kurt Carr, Tremaine Hawkins and others.
LIFE IN HIP-HOP…
He spent a significant part of his career recording and performing with Snoop Dogg, TuPac, Dogg Pound, and other Death Row artists and touring worldwide with Snoop Dogg. On July 2nd, 2005, he had the opportunity to perform in London at Live 8, a nationwide string of benefit concerts to campaign against poverty. This benefit concert has gone 9X platinum to date, selling over 9 Million copies.
PRODUCER IN THE AFTERLIFE…
“I am more than just a drummer” –D*LOC
In 2008, D*LOC founded his music company: TFD Music. Its name is short for “ThFunkyDrmr,” a moniker given to him by Jody Watley, his godmother. While handling a variety of responsibilities for TFD’s artists, D*LOC serves as drummer/music director for Rahsaan Patterson. Over the course of their partnership, he contributed on the entire Bleuphoria album and added his musical expertise, produced and arranged “Little Drummer Boy” of the The Ultimate Gift LP, and wrote and produced the title track for After Hours, Rahsaan's third studio album. Additionally, D*LOC wrote, produced and arranged the debut album "Cracks of the Concrete" for the hip hop/rock band, the Bottom Dwellerz.
Currently, you may find D*LOC performing percussion on the #1 song and album of the summer, "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke or with any of the following artists: T.I., Lil Wayne, Pharrell, and Miley Cyrus.
Grammy Award-winning percussionist, Derrick “D*LOC” Walker is featured inside the June 2014 issue of DRUM! Magazine. J. Poet interviewed D*LOC and the editorial was published in the ‘Hand DRUM!’ section on page 65.
Currently D*LOC is playing percussion for Soul Train Award-winner, Robin Thicke on the “Blurred Lines Tour” featuring T.I., Lil Wayne, Pharrell, and Miley Cyrus. The third quarter of 2014 will mark the one year anniversary of D*LOC’s endorsement deal with Latin Percussion also known as LP Products.
D*LOC was hired in his early teens by Snoop Dogg and this relationship paved the way for him to become the Hip-Hop Drummer / Percussionist of several Death Row Records artists including Tupac “2Pac” Shakur in the mid to late 90’s. In addition to being the most sought after percussionist by several West Coast Hip-Hop artists, D*LOC also played for award-winning gospel artists and bands including Andrae Crouch, the L.A. Mass Choir, Daryl Coley, Kurt Carr, Tremaine Hawkins and more.
