Behind the Lens: an in-depth look into Devitto P’s Portrait of Life mixtape Editorial
by: Marx London
They say that every picture is worth a thousand words… if that is true, then Devitto P’s new mixtape Portrait of Life (releasing May 31,2015) is no exception. Part Hip Hop, part R&B, with Dance, Rock, Pop, and Soul sprinkled in, Mr. Pentell is an artist with which the world has never seen. He seamlessly drapes his melodies around a deep silky rap flow, and his cadence sets the tone for believable and intricate storylines within each song he delivers. His 20 plus years in music shows the versatility of a veteran artist, coupled with the hunger and ferocity of a young, hungry rapper. Devitto seems to be an ever changing character throughout his projects; from the harsh realities of life in his M.I.S.E.R.Y album in 2000, “the struggle” in 2002’s Fastlane, to the bright commercial lights of The Blacklight in 2010, and the care-free club life of The Rockstar Lifestyle Club EP in 2013. Once again, Devitto has adorned new shades of himself on his latest project Portrait of Life. According to “Rockstar P”, this is his deepest, and most personal project to date, and he is confident that everyone will emotionally connect with at least one track on the mixtape.
I had the pleasure of listening the Portrait of Life in its entirety, and it led me on an emotional journey. I’ve heard many Devitto P songs in the past, but this project left me feeling eerily like he was invading my psyche. It’s almost as if I was staring at a blank canvas while he was painting me a vivid picture. It was cinematic, and filled with sweltering emotion. It took me on quite a rollercoaster. After hearing the project, I wanted to reach out to Devitto and ask him what led him to his most profound work yet. The following is my Q&A interview with Mr. Devitto Pentell, as he gave me a candid look… behind the lens.
ML: Why did you choose Portrait of Life as your definitive title?
DP: Well, the title came as part of my process. What I mean by that is, I didn’t create the mixtape around a title, instead I came up with the title based on the group of songs I recorded as a whole. When I reflected on what I had recorded the name just kind of came to me. Portrait of Life was a great refection of the music I had created, and breathed life into the message I was trying to get across.
ML: How did you formulate what songs would appear on the mixtape?
DP: That’s a great question! My producer (Tre Weaver of Maple St. Music Co.) had told me for years that although my music was good, it lacked a personal touch. After letting that soak in for a while I decided to open myself up emotionally, and give the listeners a new side of myself. I had been holding that back, as Hip Hop rarely lets you bare your emotional side. I just started to record music based on emotion that I kept hidden inside, as well as writing about subjects that I’ve seen others go through. After all, music is a reflection of life. Once the floodgates opened, the Portrait of Life literally wrote itself!
ML: That brings me to my next question of what is your process like in the recording studio?
DP: Oh man! Asking me to give up my secrets (laughs)! A wise man once told me that songwriting is like “catching lightning in a bottle.” There is so much that goes into my process, and so many circumstances that play a part in the creative process. I’ve been doing this for a long time now so I don’t really think about it much anymore. I guess for me it’s a matter of the beat I’m working with. The beat is a canvas and I am the painter. I hear the topic in the music, and it speaks to me. I just translate what I hear. To me, the story has already been written, I am just the scribe. Generally, I get the beat, write to it, and recorded it
in the same session. I also do the studio engineering and mixing myself, and I hate leaving the studio with unfinished product. I listen, write, record, and mix all in the same time.
ML: You have been doing music for over 20 years now. That said, what drives you to continue on your musical journey?
DP: It’s the people brotha! Without the listeners and fans I’m just a hobbyist! I try to remain unbiased and attempt to make music that people want to hear. This music journey isn’t about me, fame, or fortune. It’s about touching the lives of others, and making them feel understood, even if only for 3 minutes and 29 seconds. Music moves the world, so my job is to move the people. I’m the voice of those with no words to speak!
ML: Who is Devitto the artist, compared to Devitto the man in real life?
DP: Well Marx, I think the biggest difference between the two is confidence. I’m generally confident in life but I’m human, and prone to weakness. Devitto the artist is generally bordering on egocentric. However, on this mixtape I got the opportunity to show my more human side. I really bled on many of these tracks. Devitto the artist is a Rockstar, and caters to the selfishness inside. Devitto the man is selfish to a degree, but I have kids and real world struggles like everyone else. The artist side is glorified shades of the real me, and allows me to say some things I really think, but would never say out loud (laughing).
ML: How vital is it that people download the free mixtape?
DP: Damn! If you have ever experienced a good or bad relationship, if you have even been through struggle or triumph, if you ever felt alone on life’s journey, then it’s a must that you download Portrait of Life! This isn’t the superficial music you have gotten used to. It deep and thought provoking. There is a song on this mixtape for every person in every walk of life! Best of all, it FREE!
ML: What is your favorite song on the mixtape and why?
DP: It’s tough to choose but I would have to say “Shooting Stars”. There are two versions on the mixtape, but I would pick that particular song because it is inspiring, and it is dedicated to my kids. The gist of the track is that you can be anything you set your mind to, and too me, that is the epitome of that the Portrait of Life is all about (shout out to Kloud Nine for the feature on the remix). This mixtape has so many powerful songs!
ML: Last question: What do you hope to achieve with this mixtape, and what is next after this project?
DP: Hmm… my hope is that people will be moved emotionally by what they hear. I want music to feel special like Hip Hop did back in the day. I also hope to garner new fans, as the Portrait of Life mixtape is the prelude to my D.O.E. (Definition of Excellence) album releasing late summer 2015. This mixtape is a stepping stone to a much broader spectrum of music. I just want to prepare the world for some of what is to come. I also hope that everyone will download the mixtape, especially since it is free. (laughing).
In conclusion, I would like to thank Devitto Pentell, AKA Devitto P for granting me this in-depth look into the Portrait of Life mixtape. The mixtape releases online at noon on May 31st. You can download your free copy via the links below. In my opinion, this project is one of the most heart-felt and emotional mixtapes I have ever heard. It is truly what it claims to be… the Portrait of Life.
