ESOHEL
"The Box: Music Television You Control" is something many 90's kids often reminisce about. For Esohel, it's more than just a memory, it sparked his obsession with music. The emcee from Chicago recalls seeing his favorite artists on the channel and desiring to decipher their lyrics. He recorded songs on a cassette player and slowly broke down every verse with each replay. Little did he know that this practice, among other influences and opportunities would one day lead him to be the eloquent, versatile lyricist that he is today.
At a young age, Esohel got his first taste of the music industry by working with his brother, DJ Eddie B House, who in the 90's had national success with his series of house mixes. He tagged along at events to introduce his older brother and fell in love with the rush of being on stage in front of a large crowd. Aside from that rush, hearing his brother's mixes which were branded by his voice being blasted through the streets of Chicago gave him the motivation to keep recording. As his love for music grew, he began to keep a notebook of his own rhymes. This, he kept to himself until he found the courage to reveal his talent to friends and family. The positive response he received, to him, was unexpected and overwhelming. With that, the hunger to keep writing and master his skill grew. It was when he obtained a semi-finalist spot with an invite to audition to be finalist in WGCI's Annual Music Seminar competition that his dream to pursue music as a career was solidified. By sophomore year of high school, he was able to release his first full-length album entitled Eclipse under the pseudonym Emcee Sol. With that, he began to perform live at clubs, festivals, car shows, and talent shows across the city.
Early in his journey, Esohel was influenced by Busta's delivery and stage presence, the Mid-West flows of Twista, Crucial Conflict & Do Or Die, and Nas' ability to tell a story with articulate verses. Through the years, his style has evolved as he was exposed to various strains of hip-hop. He took what he's learned in every aspect of the music industry and artfully honed his skills. From hype and aggressive to conscious and laid back, his wordplay and delivery are versatile enough to match any production style. Stimulated by his own experiences and life in the city that he loves, he makes sure his witty tales are relatable and speak directly to the audience's soul because to Esohel, "real rap" is the motto.
Inspiration is truly what has driven Esohel's music. Constant inspiration coming from his family and the melting pot that is Chicago, the music is nowhere near a halt. Though he started at a very young age, he still continues to strive for growth. With the help of his DJ, Ricky Dubs along with Christian Ray and Joe Dickerson on drums and guitar, respectively, we can only expect Esohel's music to innovate and perhaps even change the game. He sticks to the standard he's set for himself to push the bar further and further with every endeavor. His skills combined with a commendable work ethic and the aspiration to keep the quality of his music a priority is what makes Esohel one of the emcees who prove that hip-hop is not dead.
