Since the inception of Hip Hop, several female M.C.'s have claimed their stake on the plot of this male dominated industry. I have discovered the latest and greatest on the rise - a young lady out of Houston, Texas known as Mz. Trice.
Reviewing music acts and blogging about them is what I do. Seeing a half-dozen shows a week is a lot. It happens to be my usual routine. I must say, honestly, much of the time I'm not impressed by the performances. There are times I see an unknown artist who is talented and has potential. Mz. Trice is most definitely one of these talents.
For this show I had flown to Houston on a rumor that Mz. Trice was playing at a decent sized venue downtown. I had already viewed her video, "Warning Sign" online at the recommendation of a music critic friend who highly recommended Mz. Trice. I checked out her Sound Cloud. Her song, "Pain Inside Want to Die" is deep and she bears her soul and challenges the listener to reflect. Her song, "Freeway Fucking" is going to win the sexy track of the year award - definitely! Her song, "Cypher" I blast on the way home from the club. Her other tracks were also extremely tight. Lyrics that made me really stop, listen, rewind (hold up, did she say what I think she said…) and listen to the tracks again and again.
The show Mz. Trice put on the other night was one of the best I've seen in quite a while. And I mean, it was just her - and a DJ. She didn't need an entire crew on stage with her to pump her up. This sista can hold her own. Lyrically, I'd take her, hands down, in a cipher against some the best lyricists out right now. Several acts were in the line-up but none came close to the talents of Mz. Trice. She is a true Mistress of Ceremonies. Her flows were extremely tight and her honey voice bonded with the beats resulting in sticky, gooey loveliness. I was positioned just in front of a speaker monitor where every syllable she spoke struck me dead in my chest - in my heart.
After the show I pushed my way through the throng of groupies - male and female - trying to get close enough to speak at her. A flash of my press pass and a slick line to the female security got me within earshot of Mz. Trice. I caught her just as she and her entourage exited out the back and into a decked-out stretch Escalade. I spoke to her, told her I loved her music. I had to concentrate on remaining calm and keeping my composure (she's stunningly beautiful and has the presence of a nubian queen). She took my hand and gently squeezed it and killed me with that smile as she was whisked away and out. I was standing there like, yo….did that really happen?
Don't take my word for it. Check out Mz. Trice for yourself. Once you become a fan like me, buy her tracks like I did (you're going to want the entire album - trust me on that). I want to be one of the those who can truly say, "I was down with Mz. Trice from day one."
