International recording artist S.L.A.P. has toured the world and worked with hot artists such as Future, B.O.B, T-Pain, and Shawna. On his sophomore album “Mating Season” he opens up about being in a relationship. We recently had the chance to catch up with him and he dished on everything from his single “Ray Rice” to whom his musical inspirations are. Check out what S.L.A.P is up to below.
GMBU: Tell us about yourself?
S.L.A.P.: Stage Name is S.L.A.P., which stands for Somethin’ Like A Playa, I was raised in Birmingham, AL. Since Elementary School I been doing music, but I have only been in the studio since 2006. I have been on 2 national tours, have open for a lot of famous hip-hop artists, and performed overseas 4 times (Mexico, Canada, Bahamas, London).
GMBU: What was the inspiration behind your sophomore album “Mating Season”?
S.L.A.P.: I was in a transition in my person life, from being single to falling in love. That basically affected my mind state in the studio, so I made like over 20 love songs. I wanted to drop it in the winter, when I got finish with all the tracks, so I figured people want to cuddle and mate during this time, hence the concept name “Mating Season”.
GMBU: Your latest visual “Ray Rice”, explain the concept?
S.L.A.P.: The song is about taking any opportunity to be with a woman, enjoy it, and do it again lol. The video was shot while Jhay Black and I were on tour, so at every site we would get some footage of us partying to the track. Then we decided to have an official shoot in Atlanta to complete the video.
GMBU: Did you get any backlash on using the metaphor “Ray Rice” as the title to the track?
S.L.A.P.: Yes, I had 3 radio stations tell me they don’t support beating women. I also had a couple of women’s activist groups say they would sue if I did not stop pushing the song. I think I knew it would get some type of reaction, good or bad haha.
GMBU: Who are your musical inspirations and role models?
S.L.A.P.: Of course Tupac & Biggie, Earth Wind & Fire, Frankie Beverly, The Temptations, T.I., Jay-Z, Nas & Ludacris. I like a lot of old school R&B, because they had a message in every song back then.
GMBU: Will you be touring in the near future?
S.L.A.P.: Yes, I have a High School Tour, around the Southeast, I will be on starting in late November. Plus I have over 100 shows booked this winter in the US.
GMBU: How does your music relate to your fans?
S.L.A.P.: My fans can play my music to their family and friends, due to me not cursing in my lyrics. They also can tell my lyrics are true and authentic to my actually lifestyle.
GMBU: When you are not in the studio what do you like to do for fun?
S.L.A.P.: My hobbies; I play sports, go to church, travel on trips, and read something interesting.

Why did you select this song as your current single?
First off, it is a hot record and the song is very current with the season (Winter).
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
It sums up the entire project entitled “Mating Season” (11/11/14), and because it’s about love and passion.
What was the writing process for the song?
The producer (J. Pilot) was in a vibe of R&B, so he started playing instrumentals. As soon as I heard the first 15 seconds of the record, I told him to stop so I could come up with a hook. P. D. Jackson-Olin High School, founded in 1952 as Western Olin High School, renamed after principal Pierre Denson Jackson. Affectionately known as J.O., it is the largest high school in the Birmingham City Schools System, serving over 1,700 students from the Ensley area. The school is located at 1300 Avenue F Ensley adjacent to McAlpine Park. The principal is Anthony Gardner.
Mascot & school colors
Jackson-Olin's teams are called the Mustangs and the school colors are Kelly Green and Gold.
New campus
In Fall 2006, Jackson-Olin moved to a new $30.8 million 300000square feet building and merged its student body with the former Ensley High School. The new school has a capacity of 1,800 students in 90 classrooms on 2 floors. There is a 450 seat cafeteria, 1,800 seat gymnasium, 750 seat auditorium, a practice gym and a football stadium at the new campus. A career wing houses classrooms for auto repair, welding, and culinary arts as well as science labs. Goodwin Mills and Cawood were the architects for the new building, and Doster Construction was the general contractor.

The Jackson-Olin marching band, the Mean Green Marching Machine, is known for its showmanship and entertaining musical performances. A Western-Olin graduate himself, Mr. Donald "D.C" Crawford has served as the head band director for more than 32 years, leading the band to numerous awards and performances. The band performed at the 2000 inaugural ceremony for Bernard Kincaid, Jackson-Olin Alumnus and former mayor of Birmingham, Alabama.
The feature dancers of the marching band are the Golden Phillies. The Dazzling Diamonds are the flag team.
