StarVation is a Maryland based hip-hop act with a uniquely different slant on a genre which (according to some industry insiders) has lost its appeal. Unlike the drove of rappers flooding the industry with their simplistic rhymes with monotonous beats to match, StarVation stands apart mainly due to their respect to those who have paved the way for their foray into rap game, by reintroducing lyricism with elaborate production reminiscent of groups’ like Wu-Tang and A Tribe Called Quest who reigned during hip-hop’s golden era. With top-notch production from producer/founder Orren “Ojizzonthetrack” Eaton, rappers A-Boogie, Slim DeVito, Jaxx, and Gino Staxx aka Sling Shot make it known that their young age (ranging from 21-22 years old) doesn’t necessarily reflect their taste in rap music but more of an appreciation for a genre built on individuality. Inspired by greats like the Notorious B.I.G., Tracey Lee, Jay-Z, and Nas, StarVation strives and succeeds in bridging the gap between their generation and the “30 and over” crowd with songs like “Hands in the Air,” “Bad Girl,” and “Wolf Pack” which is quickly becoming an international hit in parts of Africa and in clubs around Europe. They've only been a group for little over a year, but have accomplished a great deal. For instance, they opened for Kendrick Lamar (as the only opening act on his Verge Tour) at the Univ. of Delaware a few months ago. Also, they were featured in XXL Magazine (online) as one of the top ten groups to watch from Maryland. They recently collaborated with South Africa's hottest rapper Reason, and will release their latest mix-tape "E2B" (hosted by C-Live) in South Africa next month followed by another interview in Hype Magazine (December 2013 issue). Lastly, their "Foreign Exchange" mix-tape (hosted by Kiss FM D.J. Shortee Blitz) will drop in London at the top of 2014 (courtesy of NHNH Records). StarVation’s meteoric rise to the top is indicative of the hip-hop audience’s thirst for music with substance. StarVation is more than willing to oblige them. Stay tuned.
D.J. C-Live was born in Durban North in 1981 , DJ C-Live (aka Clive Shabalala) moved to Jozi in the early 90s where he matriculated at Athlone Boys High. It was at school where he first embraced the philosophy and music of hip hop culture-“I vividly remember the day when hip hop made sense to me..it was beautiful and liberating”. Starting as a B-Boy at dance sessions, and establishing the city’s first B-Boy crew (Static B-Boys), he gravitated towards spinning the decks under the guidance of Le Club's resident DJ's, Bionic and Blaze and soon developed a growing reputation for slamming beats and rocking the crowds in Joburg's emerging hip hop culture. Since then his considerable skills as a DJ have been in hot demand throughout Gauteng and beyond with stints at The Edgars Music Series, The Black Eyed Peas Benefit Concert, Carfax, The Hilton Hotel ,and the House On Fire show in Swaziland. In recognition of his talents DJ CLive was also invited to attend the African Leaders Council Conference held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
