The Gild began in 2008 when bassist/drummer Deborah "Dev" Van Kampf escaped from the tyrannical grasp if the Happy Trees North Point Collective, an authoritarian Earth-Peace commune, fleeing to the town of Milpitas. A few days of vagrant wandering passed before she met guitarist/keys/vocalist Reese Rhys, who immediately took her in and discovered Dev's musical talent. After considerable insiting, Reese's mom reluctantly allowed Dev to stay. They spent the next few months practicing, making songs, honing their craft. On Rhys' 18th birthday, the duo packed up and left for L.A., hoping to get lucky down south. The Gild drifted under the radar, playing and performing wherever they could. Though their reluctance to stray from their morals and undying adherence to their DIY ethic has been somewhat of a roadblock, Reese remains optimistic, saying this: "Hey, we're not out to make money, sell records, or get famous. We're not about that. No. Me and Dev do this because we love music. We love to play, We love to create. We do it because we love it and we hope other people will too. I've always wanted to make someone's favorite song."
