The Rhythm is a 5 piece wide variety dance band based in Denver CO. Dawn Paulson sings leads and harmonies. Nik Savastinuk plays guitar, keyboards and sings. John Christmas plays bass, keyboards, guitar and provides lead and harmony vocals(John is on long term convalescent leave and our friend Bob O'Connell is filling in). Wynn Dungey plays keyboards, bass, trumpet and fluegelhorn, and also provides lead and harmony vocals. Steve Pavey rounds out the group on drums and lead/harmony vocals. With 5 solid vocalists and solid musicianship as well, The Rhythm gets audiences on the dance floor and keeps them there!
How it all began: Steve Pavey had been playing around Denver since 1986 and while some of the bands had come close, something was missing. After leaving the Rhythm Junkies, he decided to take the time to find the right people that would make his dream band a reality. He tried out several female singers before meeting Dawn Paulson. As soon as she walked through the door, he knew he'd found his perfect female voice. We found Wynn but went through several bass players.
Nik played with Wynn in Never Surrender and is a triple threat on guitar, keyboards and vocals. John came out to play a few tunes and even though Dawn had laryngitis and couldn't sing a note, John was so impressed by the rest of the band and vice versa that we knew our lineup was once again complete and stronger than ever!
So what makes The Rhythm such a good band? First, there's the level of experience the individual musicians bring to the band. Nik Savastinuk is a singer, keyboardist and guitarist and he does it all very well. John Christmas, who hails from Memphis TN, has played with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Memphis Horns and worked with Kathy Mattea, Terri Gibbs and Victor Wooten. Wynn Dungey has played with or run sound for artists from PA to CO, including Carole King. Steve Pavey had his first professional gigs in 1970, and has toured all over the country, written, recorded and opened for several national and international acts which included Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, Uriah Heep and Bread, among others. He was based in the Midwest before relocating to Colorado and when Dawn Paulson sings.....people start to smile and dance! Put all these talented people together and you get The Rhythm!
Kind of the usual story : As soon as we book gigs, we undergo a big change! In this case, John had a heart attack which is taking him out of commission for at least the next 3-4 months. Ronnie decides he no longer wants to rehearse and "isn't motivated to audition substitute bassists". He leaves. Randy comes back from Minnesota and we add Nik as well!
