Born and raised in Whiteville North Carolina, Toot AKA Tabitha Brown is a force to be reckoned within the southern hip-hop community, poised to take the rest of the world by storm. The hot young rapper, recently signed to Pink Kisses Entertainment, is a welcomed fresh voice in the milieu of female rappers hitting the music scene.
While growing up in North Carolina, Toot was always surrounded by music. Her father and uncle, talented musicians in their own rite, helped Toot recognize at an early age that music was not only a talent and passion, but also the way she must live her life. And this is exactly what Toot Toot has been doing. She began writing at the age of 16 and performing at the age of 19.
Performing at a local competition at 19, her fearlessness and ferocity were instantly recognizable, propelling her into a local phenom. This initial performance furthered an already insatiable love of music. In her own words, “ I am music and music is me.”
Holding down a variety of jobs, Toot took advantage of every opportunity to write. Whether it was locking herself in her room for hours, or writing while working at the layaway dept at Wal-Mart. Toot’s drive made sure, no matter the situation, her music was at the forefront of her life.
Describing her hometown as, “super-duper country,” her southern roots heavily influence her flow. Toot’s community became both a source of inspiration and support to her. Profoundly influencing her musical development, her sense of place provided Toot with material and experiences making her the kind of rapper where nothing is off limits. Toot Toot’s rap is above all personal and expressive. Her music then is not a choice, but a necessity.
Toot’s stylings develop out of a rich legacy of female rappers. Her major influences, demonstrate an understanding of female hip-hop history, including the likes of: Foxy Brown, MC Lyte, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez. In a music scene dominated by men, Toot never felt uneasy or marginalized, rather sites male artists as a source of comradely and inspiration. This highlights one of the most unique of Toot Toots many talents, a driving force and flow that no person can deny.
While working with a group of rappers, the Fame Gang, Toot became known as the First Lady of Fame Gang. Toot was asked by a local Rapper to join him on the track “Bali.” This appearance cemented Toot as a rising star and grabbed the attention of the New York City based label Pink Kisses Entertainment.
Now signed to Pink Kisses Entertainment, Toot’s unique and instantly recognizable voice and flow illustrate what her fans and supporters are already well aware of, that she is unstoppable.
