In Chicago Illinois, where the live music scene is so substantial and diverse, it is difficult to stand out. The members of Altered State know this all too well and have found a formula for firing up a crowd, and establishing a fervent fanbase. By taking classic rock anthems and "altering" them into progressive metal songs, Altered State can turn any crowd into an engaged, enthusiastic audience.
The main reason that Altered State stands out as a "cover band" (although they have original songs as well) is the variety of influences and experiences that each member brings to the table. Drummer/co-founder Andrew Schreiner, guitarist/co-founder Scott Cohen, and guitarist/tech author Larry Herman all have been involved in the Chicago music scene for 30+ years, playing in rock/metal/punk bands such as Miracle Babies, Disconnected, Hellwagen, OSM, Slampede, Rock Bottom, and High Alert. Vocalist Dan Wurzer entered the scene only a few years ago, but has the prowess and crowd mastery of a seasoned veteran. He has shared the stage with, and fronted bands such as Disconnected, Common Knowledge, and F'N Monster and is also a co-founder of Altered State. Bassist Joe Hall is the newest band member, and has also been part of the Chicago music scene for 30+ years, performing with bands such as The Reckoning, Next Day Heir, Galeforce, and Midnight Road, which fostered his experience with rock/jazz/blues grooves. This combination of skilled musicians have found a delicate balance of compatibility without conformity, and conversion without corruption.
