100 Proof Southern Roots Rock!
Deacon Jones & The Dirty Rotten Sinners deliver soulful southern rock music with a tip of the hat to many of their musical influences including the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gov't Mule and more. Pulling Southern Rock out of the 70's and into a time and culture where folks need the pride and attitude the music invokes.
Leading a congregation of hard-core Southern Rock fans from the keys of a gritty sounding B3, Deacon Jones is on a mission to bringing the people back to the fold! Tired of all the corporate, politically correct, cookie cutter processed music that's being spoon fed to the public, this is one band that's determined to bring back something that is lost on today's radio... Real music!
Real songs, Real people!

Deacon Jones and the Dirty Rotten Sinners
By Kane Taylor
The Hallowed Halls recently rang with the rich music of Deacon Jones and the Dirty Rotten Sinners. They performed a set in the main room of this wonderful building that houses a fully equipped recording studio, located at 4420 S.E. 64th Ave. in Portland.
Rick “Deacon” Jones is a significantly multitalented composer and organ/keyboard player, who often includes piano and features his voice as lead singer. He boasts about his “hired guns”, “A List” musicians who perform with him regularly and are familiar with his material. The lineup of “Sinners” this day includes Dave Sanders (drums), Robert Beckman (bass), lead guitarist Blake Zumwalt, and Fiona Sanders on background vocals. All based in the greater Newberg area.
Jones claims Portland as his home town, having returned after residing elsewhere. He proudly presents music in the style of the Southern Rock genre. He wants to convey in his sound the sense of relatability, that it’s not exclusive of anyone. “I feel such energy when I perform it,” he says, and he wants others to feel the same. Jones presents his original music in the Southern Rock vibe and plans to release recordings to the public soon. In the meantime, he performs as a soloist both in church and other arenas.
One song he notes is “10,000 Ways”. He wrote it with his former drummer in mind (deceased). It’s based on his memories of life on the road, as a legacy. He reflects on what it could have been if he had made other choices and ponders where he might be instead of where he is now. He mentions “hard luck” and redemption, from life on the road.
Of special note is Producer Timothy Eaton’s re-arrangement of the Styx tune “Blue Colllar Man,” soon available from Jones as a single. Eaton has produced groups such as The Eagles, The Allman Brothers and skynyrd, and he has strong ideas about presenting Deacon Jones to the public. Jones’ music is characterized as “tougher than a breakfast steak at Denny’s.”
Jones describes the progress of his career as “a marathon, not a sprint” and is happy to be able to take the time to get the right people together. He is excited to anticipate getting his music out to the public in 2019. With Eaton as Producer, Jones believes he has a good team, although his current “step-up” move feels a little “surreal.” He recently signed with label and management company Von Artists, and his home life focuses on building on this process, and taking care of family.
Remodeled from a Multnomah County Library as a Historic building, this venue retains much of the appearance and comfort of the original user. Even the little lunch room has a crystal chandelier. The cathedral-style windows and vaulted ceiling have been preserved, and, of course, it’s well insulated for sound. Kudos to the Hallowed Halls crew.
If you have been missing that solid, satisfying Southern Rock sound, your tapes are worn out, your CDs are scratched, do not despair. Catch up with Deacon Jones and the Dirty Rotten Sinners. You will be saved.
