Blaqstarr or DJ Blaqstarr, is a Baltimore, MD native DJ, singer, and producer. Catipulted into worldview for his work with Diplo and M.I.A., Blaqstarr started DJ’ing in his early teens. By the age of 16, he was deep into the Baltimore club scene where he produced his first club banger “Tote It”. Tote It immediately became the biggest song in Baltimore and the city began to demand more music from the 16 year old. In fact, before he was even 20 years old Blaqstarr had produced over half a dozen original tracks that were the biggest tunes in Baltimore with the help of the late Baltimore Club legend DJ K-Swift. Whether it was one of his own DJ sets, at an eastside house party or getting heavy rotation spins on Baltimore radio stations, Blaqstarr’s sound had taken over the city.
Blaqstarr became internationally known for his songwriting and production work on M.I.A’s 2007 album Kala and 2010’s Maya. Over the past few years, Blaqstarr has released Superstar EP (on Diplo’s Madd Decent label), The Divine EP ( Interscope/N.E.E.T.) and Blaqstarr: The Mixtape (a free online download that has made game-changing impact). His songs have found play in movies, TV shows and video games such as Washington Heights (MTV), 90210 (Fox). He has performed at music festivals such as Coachella, HardFest, and SXSW, as well as tours like “Rock the Bells” and in Europe. He's worked with artists such as Common, Switch, Steve Aoki, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Rye Rye, Shanell (YMCMB), Idle Worship, Spank Rock, Triple X-change and Afrika Bambaata. In 2011 his song “Victim” was featured in the hit movie “Magic Mike” starring Channing Tatum. The song was also prominently featured in the movie's trailer. Just recently Blaqstarr produced and performed all of the original music for the movie “LUV” starring Common, Megan Goode and Danny Glover.
Diplo was quoted stating “Blaqstarr could be this generations Isaac Hayes.” Rolling Stones interpretation of the Blaqstarr sound is that “his gauzily processed production shrouds falsetto come ons and playalistic mumblings in a skeevy haze, perfect for torpid, booming tracks that deploy anything from layered girl-churps to distorted guitars to a pilfered Cameo beat in service of massaging his psychedelic freak.” Spin.com raves, “Blaqstarr builds his lo-fi hip-hop sound by adding in touches of R&B (glossy piano cadences, soulful, melismatic vocals) – imagine Prince re-making Sign O’the Times as a banging Baltimore club record on a beat up four track recorder.” Fader praises his song “Oh My Darling”, calling it “a simple loop with Blaqstarr’s melancholy plea, something between Kanye, Prince and Robin Thicke –direct and driving.”
While he constantly developing himself as a multitalented artist, Blaqstarr is currently set to release a series of Baltimore Club EP’s with Mad Decent that will be supported by a DJ promotional tour and spot dates with Diplo and Major Lazer. The EP releases will start with the classic Blaqstarr Bmore club hits that put him on the map and take us all the way up to the new culture club tracks that he is producing now. With these releases, Blaqstarr will energize the genre’s core audience as well as cultivate new fans around the world!

Remember last year when Steve Aoki collaborated with the hottest producers in the world on his smash hit record WONDERLAND? Well, on this edition of #AOKIFILES, we're traveling back to that golden age as Steve kicks it in Maryland with the one and only BLAQSTARR to discuss the evolution of the track "Control Freak". Find out what it is about "Control Freak" that leaves Blaqstarr speechless, how it felt to work with Steve and KAY to produce the mega hit, and prepare to be amazed at the small time frame it took to make the banger from scratch! This #AOKIFILES may be a bit of a throwback, but it's just as informative and amazeballs as we've come to expect from Steve and his superstar friends!

There is No Competition Mix featured on FactMag.com
After a few years of laying low, legendary Baltimore producer / M.I.A collaborator Blaqstarr has quietly returned to the game. His latest mix is as madcap as his 2011 FACT mix, blending originals with Cindy Lauper, Fatboy Slim, and Rihanna as he darts between Bmore club, big beat, and wobbly festival fare with no regard for expectations. It’s definitely rough around the edges, but let’s hope that this signals some new material from the reclusive innovator.
