A message from the writer Craig Christie:
When undertaking the writing of Hey Florence! I was clear about the destination - the creation of a piece of musical storytelling about nurses. What has taken my by surprise, engaged and challenged me was the richness and poignancy of the journey towards that destination. My understanding and appreciation of what the profession involves and requires has been transformed by the time I spent in hospitals shadowing the nurses in all areas going about their day to day business. It is this transformed understanding that I have conveyed in the show.
What has become very important to me as a writer is to represent the nurses as they wished to be represented - their stories in their own words. To acheive this I have not told any individual stories but synthesised and combined what I learned so that in a sense I am telling every nurse's story.
I am very excited that Hey Florence! has now been performed in a variety of settings and countries. Working on the script for nurses in different countries has emphasised that, while some terms and titles may vary, the experiences of nurses as portrayed in the show are universal. Hopefully audiences will be entertained and engaged by Hey Florence! but also moved and gain a little more knowledge and insight into these extraordinary people, who I feel are sometimes so easily taken for granted. Most of all however, Hey Florence! is a celebration of the skill, warmth, humour and indomitable spirit that characterises those who undertake nursing as a career.

I wanted to thank you both for bringing such a wonderful program to our Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design Reception. It was a huge success and truly conveyed our mission of improving the nurses work environment.
There are good days and bad days with every job, but for a nurse, it’s a little deeper than that. I understood that I wanted to seek the nurse’s opinion when planning the furniture and casework for a patient room, but after seeing “Hey, Florence” I realize why it’s so important. They aren’t just performing their job in these facilities. They are saving our lives. Vanessa Perutrelli - Aldred Willaims Company
I come from a long line of nurses in my family. I have known for a long time what you have to go through. I also know one big issue that you strategically left out was what you have to put up with from the doctors! I don't know how they get away with the things they do. I give you credit for all you put up with and all you do!
I was completely amazed at the quality of the singers in the show. I expected the singers to be ok since they were all nurses. I did not expect to hear how wonderful they actually sounded! The show was very professional and was an excellent event! Don Rurdo AIA - KA Cleveland OHIO
Hey Florence was great entertainment; at times hilarious, and at times touching. It managed to offer great insights into the important roles and lives of nurses, while entertaining with clever, professionally delivered songs, in the spirit of poking fun at the hospital experience. The cast of real nurses was up to professional actor standards. Bravo! D Kirk Hamilton
I work with caregivers quite a bit and many of the topics covered during the play were ‘spot on’…not surprising since it was performed by caregivers. More importantly, I think the passion that they put into their careers came out in the performance.
I think it would be a fantastic presentation for the whole conference and would highly recommend it! Mike Zambo AIA - Bostick Design Pertnership
Hey Florence captures the essence of what nurses and caregivers experience on a daily basis. The highs, the lows, the laughter and the tears. Pride understates what nursing us all about! Edward J.Hernandez
