I don't know where I would be without music, it's the one thing that has kept me level headed mentally.
Jibba the Gent is not your regular, run of the mill rapper. Yes, he may have been born and raised far from any of the notable hip hop hot spots like New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta in of all places, Vermont - but does locale matter when you’re able to flow with such precision it has surgeons jealous? Exactly. So stacked with enough talent to put Vermont on the map as the next leading place of the genre, Jibba the Gent continues to thrive with every move he makes.
Music has been a part of Jibba the Gent’s life for as long as he’s been breathing. Growing up he idolized the funk of Andre 3000 and always appreciated the Grammy-winner’s point of view both musically and lyrically. He started messing around with music some time ago, but was thrown a curveball when he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2011. While some have mild forms, Jibba the Gent was not so lucky. As the severe pain took over his body, he was left unable to do much of anything, including music. Once the doctors got him back on track and on his way to recovery, he promised himself that his dreams would be his top priority and he got to work.
He dropped his debut album, ‘The Broccoli Tree,’ in May 2017 and since then he’s a cascade of singles he’s released since then including 2020’s “Trippin’ and “Self Destruct.” Jibba the Gent says of the latter, “This record is about a person that has given up on everything he once believed in, doing the exact opposite of everything he's ever done, and lashing out at the society around him.” He wrote it after a falling out with a close friend but made so many along the way to get this recorded.
Working alongside Mickey Factz, Jibba the Gent boasts with pride over “Self Destruct,” a single he’s called a “ballsy” move. Which it is, but one cannot play it safe when trying to reach the top, right? Jibba the Gent went for it with this controversial, abrasive new track that goes the extra mile in terms of production and sound thanks to the maestro in the booth, SkySplitterInk. “Self Destruct” even features cuts from DJ Kanganade. If the Avengers were hip hop’s finest, Jibba the Gent would be their leader because he truly pulled out the stops to assemble.
One may have assumed being in Vermont would have limited his reach but Jibba the Gent has been able to reach many by playing near and far from the heart of Brooklyn to the west coast from Los Angeles to Oakland, and everywhere in between headlining and opening for everyone from CHingy to Juvenile. Jibba has even produced shows in his native Vermont for the likes of Twista, Black Rob, Maino, Bizarre of D12, Diabolic, R.A. The Rugged Man, Ren Thomas, Slaine, Termanology, Reks and DJ Dead Eye. He was set to tour more in 2020 but COVID-19 halted all immediate plans.
Once things are back to somewhat normal again, he plans on continuing with touring, as well as making more new music for his fans around the world.
