Somewhere along the way in the last 30 years songwriters forgot what it was like to write powerful songs that invoke emotion and encourage you to step back and take in their message. Thankfully we have Fort Collins resident Nick Pauly to lead us back onto the path. The former Offbeat Revolution front man has released his debut solo EP “Light On The Other Side”. It is a showcase of deep and honest acoustic reggae. These 7 songs provide an eclectic journey through the struggles of the every man and the roads back towards positivity. His talents really shine through as they deliver on every level with not much else to fall back on but his voice and guitar. The first two songs “Demons” and “Renewing Roots” are the standout cuts. Dub and roots reggae influenced thought provoking, and catchy, songs with a great message that can go toe to toe with anything being released in the reggae scene today. “Memories” is a bit of a change-up in style, a more folk oriented ballad with a certain sweetness in his voice that could make this song pass for a City & Colour b-side. In his songs “Name Of My Game” and “Music” he brings in guest rapper Jared Schnabel to help out. It takes risks that pay off with an aurally pleasing collision of intelligent verses and soulful singing. There is a definite nod to Bradley, but there is something innovative yet familiar about it that takes me right back to my boyhood in California. Not one song on here shows signs of weakness and I’m eagerly waiting to see what he can do next. If you enjoy reggae, folk or hip hop make sure to check out Nick Pauly he will alleviate the stale taste of music today, and help you cheer up or chill out. This EP brings about a feeling of renewal as he shows us that no matter how bad it gets we can journey back towards a feeling of happiness and acceptance. “We all see the light, but we just go at our own pace”
