1. How long have you been doing what you’re doing and how did you get started in the first place?
ROB ALLEN: I have been doing music for about 8-10 years and listening and studying music for as long as I can remember.
2. Who were your first musical influences that you can remember?
ROB ALLEN: My father was my first musical influence. His name should be on billboards with the best of them. Other than my father, my earliest influences: Brian McKnight, Nsync, Michael Jackson, Prince, Boyz II Men, and the Eagles
3. Which artists do you listen to today? And is there anybody special you’d like to collaborate with?
ROB ALLEN: I listen to a huge variety of music from rock to pop to R&B. 3 artists in particular who I would love to work with are Justin Timberlake Robin Thicker and Pink
4. Describe the first piece of musical equipment that you actually purchased with your own money. And which is the one piece of hardware you’re still looking to buy now?
ROB ALLEN: First piece was a Samson C01 Condenser Mic. I thought I had the top of the line. Haha. These days I’m just looking for a bad ass Compressor and a gorgeously clean mic that can handle instruments and live sound.
5. Tell us something about how and where you recorded your latest single, “Too Slow”?
ROB ALLEN: Too Slow is an awesome track, written by Chazy Benton and produced by Beatnomics. We recorded this song in Hollywood, FL in a few hours and it was just magic. Fun, energetic, sarcastic song with great melodies and sound.
6. Live gigging or studio work, which do you prefer and why?
ROB ALLEN: I can’t choose. Nothing beats performing live, but to create in a room with your team is irreplaceable too….
7. Which one of your original songs do you feel is the absolute “crowd pleaser”, and moreover, do you remember when and why you composed it?
ROB ALLEN: Ahhhhhh. That I can’t answer yet. Too many secrets !!!
rob-allen
8. On which one of your songs do you think you delivered your personal best performance so far, from a technical point of view?
ROB ALLEN: We have such a great compilation of music. Every song has its own energy and performance strategy behind it. I couldn’t choose..
9. Which ingredient do you think is most essential in making ROB ALLEN music sound the way it does?
ROB ALLEN: Passion
10. If you were forced to choose only one, which emotion, more than any other drives you day after day to stay in this tough business. Is it joy, anger, desire, passion or pride and why?
ROB ALLEN: Passion, you know I asked for this. No one handed me music and said ” here you will do music ” my wonderful parents never pushed anything on myself and my sister. And to see all my life what music can do, built this never ending drive to create passionately.
11. Which aspects of being an independent artist and the music making processes excites you most and which aspects discourage you most?
ROB ALLEN: Excite me ? Has to be the knowledge. You see every angle and feel every positive light and burden. The most discouraging is big money runs the industry, paying off the world to play your song. But I wouldn’t sit on discouraging, I would say, speed bump
12. Tell us something about your songwriting process and what usually comes first, the lyrics or the music?
ROB ALLEN: That depends. Usually it’s music first then If it talks to me I talk back. My process includes the elements around me. Sometimes I’m in a dark room and other times I am sitting at chipotle with my headphones on.
13. How involved are you in any of the the recording, producing, mastering and marketing processes of your music. Do you outsource any of these processes?
ROB ALLEN: I try to know my place. I have a great team who handle a lot of the business aspects. My producers wouldn’t need a hand in that area either lol. But I try to always voice my opinion at the end of the day. After all the product will represent me and my brand so I have to make sure it is just that.
14. The best piece of advice in this business you actually followed so far, and one you didn’t follow, but now know for sure that you should have?
ROB ALLEN: Best? Just do you. Feel and do you. Worse thing that can happen is you mess up and correct it. One I didn’t? That hasn’t happened yet lol
15. At this point, as an independent artist, which is the one factor you desire most, and feel will undeniably benefit your career?
ROB ALLEN: My individuality. I’m not out here to mimic anybody male or female. I believe in who I am and am fortunate enough to have a team who believes in who I am.
16. Do you consider Internet and all the social media websites, as fundamental to your career, and indie music in general, or do you think it has only produced a mass of mediocre “copy-and-paste” artists, who flood the web, making it difficult for real talent to emerge?
ROB ALLEN: It’s a mixture of both. There are a lot of youngsters who cheat their creativity by putting out sub-par music. All music is capable, but not all music is real. It can benefit and unfortunately we just have to play the game and make the right moves.
17. Does your musical family, influence your work in any way?
ROB ALLEN: absolutely. They push me to make better product and built my confidence a ton. I’m blessed
18. Is “Too Slow” the exact sound and vibe you wanted to produce at this time in your career, and will your upcoming Ep be much of the same, in terms of style?
ROB ALLEN: For sure. Too Slow is a blend of modern sound with an 80′s-90′s vibe. Exactly what I am. I grew up listening to boy bands and Mike ya know. We nailed it. The EP will be the same. Exactly who we are.
19. What do you think is the biggest barrier you have to face and overcome as an indie songwriter/performer, in your quest to achieve your goals and any commercial success?
ROB ALLEN: Fan connection. Connection with them individually all over this world. Using all of my avenues to chop it up with random folks and hope they believe in my sound as I believe in them as loyal fans.
20. What is the ONE thing you are NOT willing or prepared to do, in your quest to achieve a successful musical career?
ROB ALLEN: Sell out on my creativity. If I can’t be myself behind that microphone then I am just a man wearing a mask.
21. Tell us about any new projects or ideas you will be working on in the near future?
ROB ALLEN: There are a ton of things in the works. From showcases to albums. Short movies, documentaries; it’s all coming soon and it will be the best product we can achieve. My debut EP will be out certainly within the next 2-3 months and I’m really excited about that.
