St. Elmo's Fire
California metal band ST. ELMO'S FIRE was formed in 1980 by guitarist/songwriter Jeff Jones and original vocalist Tim Allwein. Their popularity was immediate and within a year they were playing the largest rock clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area opening for acts such as Y&T, Russia and Nazareth among others.
In 1982 they embarked on a 4 month Canadian tour and later that year went to LA to record their first single "Really in Love" b/w "Too Bad" . By 1983 ST. ELMO'S FIRE had relocated to Los Angeles and quickly became part of the infamous "Sunset Strip" metal scene in Hollywood during the 80's. They performed regularly at the Roxy Theatre, the Whisky, Gazzarri's, the Troubadour and about every major rock club in Southern California.
In 1884 drummer Kris Gustofson joined ST ELMO'S FIRE. Kris had previously been with Bay Area band 'TRAUMA and had recorded their "Scratch and Scream" album . TRAUMA also was Cliff Burton's original band before joining METALLICA. Bassist Simon Evans also came on board.
Word of mouth spread about the band and without any promotion at all, ST. ELMO'S FIRE'S 4 song demo began getting airplay and press throughout Europe .But in 1985 original vocalist Tim Allwein left the group and Zane Lazar replaced him . Based on their new found popularity in Europe they were soon signed to a record deal and released their self-titled debut album "ST ELMO'S FIRE" in 1986. It received rave reviews and metal radio loved it just as much as the fans. It topped the metal charts in several countries.
In 1988 ST. ELMO'S FIRE completed and released their follow up album "WARNING FROM THE SKY" . Once again it did very well and gained more fans ,especially in Japan and Asia. They also filmed a video of "Caught in the Heartbreak" in Hollywood which received play on MTV and the Skychannel .The band remained in LA the rest of that year writing and trying out the new material in the clubs . They also replaced bassist Evans with Aaron Smith.
By 1990 ST. ELMO'S FIRE released "POWERDRIVE" which soon became the bands most popular album up to that point. The reviews were outstanding and once again metal radio in Europe supported it with massive airplay. The band then hit the road in the US doing several tours in 1990 and 1991. Later in '91 ST. ELMO'S Fire returned to the studio ( with bassist Rusty Aven) to record "DESPERATE YEARS" and released it in 1992. Once again the band hit the road and toured the rest of that year as well as releasing another video .
After playing their last tour in 1992 (including dates in Mexico ) the band decided to call it quits. Gustofson went on to record with several other bands (including Frank Hannons' Moondog Mane) and Jones had a short lived stint in Vamp Le Stat and in MISS CRAZY.
In 2012 Jones and Gustofson started performing together again and ST. ELMO'S FIRE have now reformed . In 2015 they are writing some kick ass new songs and will return to the studio later next year with new vocalist Mike Palombi to record a brand new ST. ELMO'S FIRE album.
Also in 2015 Karthago/Pure Steel Records in Germany re-released all 4 original ST. ELMO'S FIRE albums on CD. They are highly collectable remastered limited editions (500 copies each) with bonus tracks ,extensive liner notes and each is numbered with a holographic letter of authenticity in the packaging.

Melodic metal band ST. ELMO'S FIRE announced today they will be using the popular fan funding platform INDIEGOGO to help fund their next album on Pure Steel Records.
According to SEF guitarist and founding member JEFF JONES, "We think this is the way to go. It's not really the wave of the future, it's happening now. Look at Megadeth, Rob Zombie and a lot of others. They are using fan funding on their projects as well."
The so called "crowdfunding" model consists of fans contributing money to help fund the costs associated with recording and mixing. In return the fan receives exclusive band "perks" based on the amount donated.
JONES adds, " It's not just about money. It's exciting because it allows our fans to be part of the entire making of the record from start to finish. They will be able to see and hear the band record and be able to interact with us. Their internet access by video and Skype will be incredible. We're offering equipment we actually used in the studio as perks. Stuff like signed drum heads, sticks, cymbals, my distortion and fx pedals, whatever we use. And even signed original handwritten lyric sheets. Want to see your name on the album we can do that too!"
ST. ELMO'S FIRE'S previous 4 albums ("St. Elmo's Fire", "Warning From The Sky", "Powerdrive" and "Desperate Years") were re released last year as numbered limited editions on Karthago/Pure Steel's "Heavy Metal Classics Series". The label will once again handle manufacturing, distribution and promotion of the album.
ST. ELMO'S FIRE will launch their INDIEGOGO campaign in the next few months.

The band St. Elmo's Fire, founded in 1979 in Cytrus Heights California brought in the course of its existence a total of four excellent albums on the market, but unfortunately very few in this country ever known. Unfortunately it must be said, because Californians were not in vain in the scene as an expert in their field. Your US-Metal was, compared to other bands of this genre, always melodic and always had elements of Hard Rock boast. So now finally appear every four albums on CD that will please the collector, because the originals were partly to be found only at exorbitant prices on the relevant Internet platforms. Their debut album was released in 1986 and brought already clearly expressed that should be reckoned with , The main reason was the excellent songwriting and above all enthroned song by Zane Lazar, of a thickness Konkurzenz to Lizzy Borden represented with his voice, who were traveling in similar climes. The amazing thing is that the songs have recognized no little patina to this day, but still sound as fresh as ever. Sure you can not explain away the former production characteristics such as amount of reverb. But that just makes the charm of the songs, they reflect reflected an era that is so certainly not come back again. This melody density and stormy, carefree approach you would want as few bands today. . A very lucky that it now gives this masterpiece of US-Metal to enriched 5 bonus songs finally I celebrate on my part now first properly the album from. Conclusion: A jewel of the US Metal finally available. Your US-Metal was, compared to other bands of this genre, always melodic and always had elements of Hard Rock boast. So now finally appear every four albums on CD that will please the collector, because the originals were partly to be found only at exorbitant prices on the relevant Internet platforms. Almost two years after the debut album was released with "Warning From The Sky" the successor , For the first time on the German Bellaphon label, it showed the band mature and balanced. Their roots and their sounds are they still remained faithful. US-Metal was the fans still offered, but the boys missed their songs this time a rougher coat which was oriented more to bands like Metal Church. The melodic elements were by no means vanished. Was still the great vocals of Zane Lazar characteristic feature in the foreground. The then so hip Hall on vocals this time a little more available, but part of that time. The production was in accordance with the former standards and sounds a little flat today's standards. Perhaps had St. Elmos Fire can provide then with this album full of classics like the title song, "Hearts On Fire" and "Hot n 'Love (She Rocks The Night)". But not quite so lucky chosen band name, the associated bit Metal finally there was a movie of the same name, which was definitely not metal with songs such as John Parr, a tiger Meet reason was to not pay attention to the album. Missed you there as a supporter of the US-metal and hard rock but definitely something. But thanks to Carthage Records this gap is now so close easily, the album also excellent with 2 Bonus Tracks comes along. Conclusion: Another gem of the US Metal finally available. ALBUMS OF THE WEEK
ST. ELMOS FIRE - Powerdrive
of Federico Martinelli - October 6, 2015
In recent years the market dedicated to reprints has grown arrogant, especially in the hard rock - heavy metal, often bringing to light discs partly forgotten or difficult to find.
The Karthago Records recently reissued the entire discography of Californians St. Elmos Fire, the band formed in 1979 by guitarist Jeff Jones and the author between 1986 and 1992 of four albums really interesting, which unfortunately remained confined within a very underground also because of the marketing decisions very controversial label of the original time. The self-titled debut in 1986 and the subsequent "Warning From The Sky" move in US territories Metal, while the following "Powerdrive" in 1990 and "Desperate Years" in 1992 show us a sound more oriented towards hard rock. "Powerdrive" is in my opinion the best record of the four, but the other three are well worth attention. Reprints are limited to 500 copies each and is quite likely to think that will be sold out in no time. Each copy on the inside is provided with the certificate number of the copy itself handmade.
The new direction of the band is soon clear our listening to the song that opens the entire work: "Gonna Get Wild" is a classic anthem stars and stripes, in the best tradition of bands like Y & T, Dokken and Quiet Riot. Moves in the same direction "Isolation", while "Wrong Side of Love" our exploring sounds close even to the movement glam / sleaze in vogue in those years. It changed again with the long "City (Behind The Walls), and" with the title track, two songs that could have been part of the first two discs and sounds more classically oriented US Metal. But there comes the ballad "I Need Your Touch" to confirm that the change taking place is important, thanks to the excellent evidence behind the microphone Zane Lazar, who manages to disentangle the various moments of the disc with authority. But if I had to choose a song symbol of this work would say "Smoking Gun" fully represents the new "skin" of the Californian quartet, great hard rock / metal class with airy choruses and arrangements chrome. To complete the dish really rich four bonus tracks (all four reprints are provided), including point out new releases of "Into The Night" and "Breaking Out" originally on the debut album, the latter also included a demo version dating back to 1986.

SUMMARY
Thanks to the excellent work of recovery of Karthago Records is possible to discover a band that deserves due to questionable marketing decisions never had the proper recognition of the public.

The release date of the ST. ELMOS FIRE album "Powerdrive" is August 21th, 2015. The pre-order phase will start on August 7th, in our webshop.
In the course of the „Heavy Metal Classics“-series Karthago Records is going to reprint the whole back catalogue of the Californians ST. ELMOS FIRE. As usual limited to 1000 copies and provided with a certificate, the four studio albums will be re-released on CD during August. Formed in 1979 by guitarist Jeff Jones, the melodic US Metal quartet earned a good reputation in the club scene of San Francisco and Los Angeles. After they played shows with superstars like Mötley Crüe, Y&T and Nazareth and recruited Trauma drummer Kris Gustofson, they released their self titled debut back in 1986 through the French label Dream Records.
After their short collaboration with Bellaphon ST. ELMOS FIRE changed the record company again for their third studio album; this time they went to the cult label Black Dragon Records (Candlemass, Manilla Road). Inspired by the Glam/Sleaze trend of the late 80s their style on „Powerdrive“ (Release: 21st August) became more Rock oriented. Experiments with slide- („Wrong Side Of Love“) and acoustic guitars („I Need Your Touch“) and the more bluesy vocals Zane Lazar also fitted well to ST. ELMOS FIRE. Rock driven, pithy riffs are a main factor of most of the songs, but also the typical US Metal sound can be heard in songs like the straight title track, the re-recording of „Into The Night“ or „Street Lethal“. With demo versions of „Inside The Hunter“ and „Breaking Out“ there are two bonus songs on the CD.
A strong album, which combines the spirit of US Metal perfectly with a relaxed Hard Rock attitude!

The fourth and final studio album “Desperate Years” (Release: 21st August) was released in 1992; like its predecessor “Powerdrive” through Black Dragon Records. On this record, the well-known US Metal - even more than on the predecessor - has been replaced by bluesy Hard Rock. But also in this genre ST. ELMOS FIRE were able to survive. Powerful acoustic ballads like “Without You” and “Where Were You” are placed next to cheesy rockers like “Chains Around My Heart” and “Part Of My Life” as well as the eight minute-instrumental “Rivethead Jam”. In songs like “Hot Time” and the Riot influenced “This Time” there still can be heard some decent Heavy Metal influences. On this re-release there are also two bonus tracks: the unreleased “Summertime Girls” as well as the single track “Really In Love” from 1984.
With “Desperate Years” ST. ELMOS FIRE presented a felicitous swansong.

Traditional US Metal with powerful, poignant melodies is driven by the magic voice of Zane Lazar. Multifaceted, often singing more high pitched he refines the strong tracks with his sublime vocals. Straight rockers like „Too Bad“ and „Inside The Hunter“ are placed next to ballads like „More Than The Air“. As bonus the reissue (release date: 7th August) is provided with a demo version from 1980 („Don’t Drop It“) as well as alternative versions of the albums tracks „More Than The Air“, „Too Bad“, „Innocent“ and „Real Life“.
A pleasure for connoisseurs of American Steel!

The second album „Warning From The Sky“ was first released in 1988 through the German label Bellaphon. Starting with the catchy, straight rocker „Don’t Want Your Love“ the Californians delivered absolutely first-class melodic Heavy Metal. Emotional (semi-)ballads like „Caught In The Heartbreak“ and „World Gone Insane“, the zippy title track or the straight, pounding „Hot n‘ Love (She Rocks The Night)“: Every single song on this nine track album convince immediately and will fascinate headbangers with good musical taste also 27 years after its first release. The re-release is provided with two bonus tracks from the band’s early days. Still with former singer Tim Raynor-Allwein ST. ELMOS FIRE had been a pure Hard Rock band back then. The reissue will be in stores at the 14th August!
Also „Warning From The Sky“ belongs to every well-stocked collection!
