"Part-time coupon seller. Part-time rapper. Chris Hello does it all.
Chris Hello, advertising junior, is a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a rapper for ShineHouse Entertainment — an Austin promotions company operated in part by Texas State students.
Hello said music has been a part of his family for generations.
“My grandma had nine kids,” Hello said. “My dad has always been musically gifted and so has his brothers and sisters. They’ve had a family band since my dad was about like 17. My dad is 52 now, so they’ve been playing in Austin for a while.”
Hello has been rapping since high school. Hello and his fellow classmates would freestyle for fun, but was always the best of the group. Hello won the “Audience Choice” award for the Mr. Pflugerville High School Talent Show.
Hello said he has thrived in the spotlight from a young age.
“I’ve been an entertainer at heart my entire life,” Hello said. “My parents have home videos of me on the fire place playing the guitar and singing.”
Hello said his lyrics differ from mainstream rap. He said he wants to break away from the drugs and brutal themes associated with the hip–hop genre, and instead represent rap in a positive light.
“I’ve never been about everything that rap comes from,” Hello said. “I’m slowly trying not to curse in my music, and I’m not going to disrespect women at all. A lot of rappers talk about weed and smoking in their raps, but that’s not me.”
Cameron Rahm, public relations representative for ShineHouse, said the music industry is more accessible than ever, allowing unconventional artists, such as Hello, to break through.
“Look at Drake,” Rahm said. “He’s a Jewish, half-white, half-black rapper from Canada. I think the whole format of hip-hop has changed.”
Rahm recruited Hello in hopes of exposing him to a marketable audience. Rahm said Hello brings something fresh to the table, while breaking stereotypes in the rap industry.
“[Hello] goes against the standard [rap] format of African-Americans that are from the hood or the ghetto,” said Rahm, music manager. “He’s a white fraternity guy.”
David Olivo, Hayden Eubanks and Nick Mayfield created ShineHouse in December 2009. The founding members hope to tackle different aspects of the entertainment industry and one day present concerts with artists such as Hello.
Olivo, head of operations, said Hello composes intelligent lyrics and continues to grow as an artist.
“He works hard and he’s a great person,” Olivo said. “That’s what makes him different from anybody else. He wants to send a positive image.”
