Music, nowadays, has a tendency to fade into the background. Just about anywhere you are, it is filling empty space with catchy phrases and hooks. The JimJims are not background music. Our main goal is to use our classically-trained expertise and lust for adventure to create an eye-popping, unforgettable experience that is just as pleasing to the music nerd as it is to the casual reveler.
The JimJims formed in 2014 in jazz college at the University of New Orleans, where we received BAs in Jazz Studies in 2016-2017. We share a love of Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, J.R.R Tolkein, Aldous Huxley, jazz, folk, punk, and a garden variety of other inspirations. Among our members is drummer Jack Vogt, a Step Pepper artist who won an ASCAP award for song composition at UNO, where we were some of the school's most respected musicians, writers, and poets. For 3 years, we played all around New Orleans, from the House of Blues to the Howlin' Wolf to Cafe Istanbul to Siberia to the Circle Bar and beyond, and played in Birmingham at the Cahaba Brewery and The Nick. We have grown accustomed to the expectations of each venue and the professionalism that is required for the process to run smoothly. See our full listing of shows, which grows as we continue our musical adventure in Birmingham, Alabama.
Our first album has received critical acclaim from UNO's Driftwood, which states:
"While some modern-day debuts may be turning toward computer-generated drum beats, letting their synths do the talking, The JimJims are playing their fingers to the bone and screaming their throats raw, a true rock-and-roller’s mentality."
