Under The Radar formed in August of 2014 and they played their first show, one month later, on one of the small stages at The Cooper-Young Festival in Memphis. There was no denying that something special was happening. The boys were only 10, 11 and 12 years old when they met, but you couldn't tell by the way they played and performed on stage. It's a very rare thing, in this day and age, for three young musicians to not only find each other but have the same passion for music. Ryan's rock-solid time-keeping coupled with Matt's thunderous bass lines lay down a solid foundation for Zeke's rocket-fueled guitar chops. Under The Radar went on to open for Kansas in April of 2015 and has since opened for Loverboy, .38 Special, Saliva, Better Than Ezra, LA Guns, Nelson, Nita Strauss, and Bret Michaels, they have proven that they can hold their own on the big stages. In September of 2018, they opened for Loverboy at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and got a standing ovation at the end of their short set. They’ve released two albums and they continue to open shows for some amazing artists. They’re getting airplay all over the world and their fan base is steadily growing. Their sound is huge, and they hold tight to their classic rock roots. UTR’s musicianship and stage presence are way beyond their years and UTR are fully committed to giving everything they’ve got, every time they step on the stage!
In the time, they have been a band, they have appeared on terrestrial radio all over the region, internet radio all over the world and had 5 separate television appearances. They played the Jimi Jamison Tribute in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and they’ve been written up by online magazines like Guitar World, Classic Rock, Prog Rock, Classic Rock Revisited and countless others. In February of 2015, an Italian website called them, "The Baby Trio From Memphis". The producers from America's Got Talent were even calling to discuss the boys. They won their first Battle of The Bands in October of 2014 at the St. Francis OctoberFest, In May of 2016, they won the Dream Night Talent Search in Dallas, Texas, and in November of that year they won the MySitti Talent Contest in Nashville. In 2018 they were Runners-up in the International Unsigned Only Song Contest with their song, “Boom” and later that month they won the Up And Coming Artist Duo/Group Award at the Josie Independent Music Awards in Gatlinburg, TN. They released their first full-length album with Jimmy Fulp engineering, Todd Poole Producing and Justin Rimer handling the mix duties in November of 2017. Todd Poole is the founding member and lead singer of Roxy Blue, who was signed to Geffen in the early ‘90s and is now signed with Frontiers. He later went on to form the Grammy-nominated band, Saliva, and to front the hard-driving band, 714. Todd is also the son-in-law of the late great Jimi Jamison, formerly of Survivor, Cobra, and Target. s. The band turns 5 this August and there will definitely be many more to come!
The boys in Under The Radar have been busy over the break recording new music for their upcoming EP. They are currently in Broken Snare Studios with Jimmy Fulp behind the helm. They are self-producing this EP with Jimmy and from this, they hope to bring their new sound and the next step in their journey. Stay tuned for the next chapter of this amazingly talented band.

Rock 103's 40th Anniversary party at Rockhaven is comin' up on Rocktober 28th at Bankplus Amphitheater featuring lots of Memphis Made bands including our very own Under the Radar. Although young, this band has talent and work ethic well beyond its young years. Consisting of Zeke Yarbro, 13 ( lead vocals, guitar), Ryan Halcomb ,15 (bass) and Matt Ireland, 14 (bass, vocals) UTR has already opened for the likes of Loverboy, 38 Special and Kansas - not bad for some young dudes plus the band's first full length album will be released around Rockhaven. The album was engineered by Jimmy Fulp at Broken Snare Studio and mixed by Justin Rimer at CrossTrax Studio. And if that's not awesome enough the new album was produced by Manager and Rockhaven heavyweight Todd Poole of Roxy Blue who certainly is no stranger to songwriting having penned classics for both RB and as an original member of Saliva. Get to know these young lads by having a listen to my two-part Memphis Made interview with the boys and preview the NEW single "Boom" below. For all things UTR please visit: utrtheband.com
Tix for Rock 103's 40th Anniversary Party at Rockhaven - Bankplus Amphitheater at rock103.com - Bret Michaels (Poison) headlines with Memphis Made bands Tora Tora, Roxy Blue, Every Mother's Nightmare & Under the Radar on the bill!
When someone mentions the words "Under The Radar", the first thing that might come to mind is an aircraft flying low enough trying to avoid being detected by the radar. But located in Memphis, Tennessee is a youth band that takes on such a name because as the story goes they flew into the music scene under the radar.
The band "Under The Radar" was born in Memphis, Tennessee in August of 2014. It is comprised of Zeke (guitar/vocals - age 13), Matt (bass/vocals - age 14), and Ryan (drums/vocals - age 15). Having opened for bands like Kansas, .38 Special, Loverboy, Saliva, Better Than Ezra and LA Guns among others, Under The Radar has proven that they will gladly carry the torch for the next generation of rock fans.
How the band came to be you may ask --- back in 2014 guitarist/vocalist, Zeke Yarbro, was jamming with bassist, Matt Ireland, on a few songs at a show they were attending. They quickly realized they had found a spark with each other and they set out to find a drummer. Ryan Halcomb was brought in and the rest is history as we know it.
What's the perfect name for an award winning --- conglomerate of rock music genius? Under The Radar of course! Under The Radar is an understatement for this amazing band of talent. This band could change the face of rock.
Their self-titled EP is a relentless genre evolving treat. "Under The Radar," is a three and a half minute explosion of guitar riffs, powerful drum cadences, and pure rock and roll! The lead singer is surprisingly powerful for such a young talent, his voice carries with little to no studio effects, aside from a little reverb. We love the chorus of the track, the music powerful and definition of rock and roll. The background vocals of the band blend perfectly and rival talent twice their age.
While "More Than You Should Know," has a bouncier feel, don't be mistaken it's still rock and roll at its finest, it just has a feel good sound. The interplay between vocalist and guitarist is simply amazing!
"Crash" is absolutely our favorite song and definitely a stand out on the EP. The vocals are amazing, it's like a lyrical confession, bursting with manic percussions, and abrasively controlled guitar riffs.
Under The Radar serves as a sweet palate cleanser to a genre that can easily become bland and predicatable --- with some simply great songs along the way. Some of their influences include Stevie Ray Vaughn, RHCO, RUSH, KISS and Van Halen to name a few.
They been featured on Guitar World, Classic Rock Magazine, Prog Rock Magazine, Classic Rock Revisited, Honest Brutality, Skyhigh Radio and Metal World Radio among others. Some of their awards include 2014 SFA Oktoberfest Battle of the Bands Champions, MySitti Talent Competition Champion in Nashville 2016 and Talent Night Showcase Winner, Texas, 2017. If that is not all, they been featured several times on television and on radio stations as far as the UK.
They recently released their debut EP with Todd Poole as the producer and Jimmy Fulp engineering. Todd Poole was the founding member and lead singer of Roxy Blue, who were signed to Geffen Records in the early 90's. Jimmy Fulp is the drummer in a band called "The 5th Kind".
Once you get past the fact that they're still at a young age, you quickly realize these boys can play and will be around for a long time. Their musicianship and stage presence is something to reckon with.
Make sure you remember the name, "Under The Radar." by Orl Hernandez and Chad Williams FHR Radio - South Florida
