The Infinity Series From J.N. Shapiro Watches



This next piece comes from a brand that's always been a favorite of mine, largely because they're responsible for manufacturing  my first decent watch. Since that piece replika Omega entered my collection, I've always been a fan of Zodiac dive watch designs. When approached by budding collectors looking to pick up a diver, I'll often point them in the direction of the Sea Wolf.In this part of the world, I learned, a watch had deep diplomatic significance. In diplomacy and business, senior government officials provided Swiss watches as gifts to recognize and honor a personal relationship and demonstrate Arab hospitality. As a personal touch, many Middle Eastern governments, particularly Gulf states, would include the royal or military crest on the dial of the watch.It's a bit of a sleeper hit, but Alicia Gutierrez, brand director of the incredibly hip retail shop Notre, is also a big fan of the vintage watch selection at the Ralph Lauren store. "Aside from having an amazing restaurant, they have a curated section of vintage that includes their watches," Gutierrez says. "I often tell people to check out the store because it's a beautiful space, and they also have this amazing vintage curator and they always have something special there."



This year was my very first Baselworld, and it was incredible. Despite being jet-lagged and hungry most of the time, the rush of running around and seeing all the new releases was really invigorating. We met with numerous brands from Rolex to Ressence and everything in between, all repliky Piaget with very different offerings. Here are my top five favorite watches from Baselworld 2016.Here’s one that design fans (Stephen Pulvirent comes to mind) always fawn over for its near-perfect balance. So it wasn't a surprise that this watch turned up in Frascella's collection. And this particular example that he sourced from Italy has aged gracefully.The watches are actually a bit more refined in sizing than previous iterations. Lucky for you, this week is one of those weeks.



Perhaps most noticeable is how the Pac-Man design carries over to the steel bracelet, which is treated to replica IWC a black ion-plating with a grey design showing more Pac-Man art with corners, ghosts, and power pellets all to be found for those who look a bit closer. Interestingly, Casio has opted for a more complicated continuous design that flows from one bracelet segment to the next. Starting at 20mm at the hogged lugs, the bracelet tapers to a 14mm-wide clasp.Within the industry (and arguably, the culture at large) there can be a bit of an obsession with timelessness, with maintaining a pristinely polished veneer against showing signs of aging, isn't there something a bit poetic about a material that bears witness to its passage through time?
