Here's what folks have said about Joe Firstman:
"His brief, eight-song set earned him a standing ovation - unheard of for a warm-up act," -New York Post
"His 40-minute set walloped the audience with its energy and its promise of what this young singer-songwriter may accomplish," - South Bend Tribune
"The band vibrated with the sense that they had something to prove Firstman appeared every ounce the promising star. The audience hung on his every word." - The Des Moines Register
"amazing Firstman's bluesy voice worked perfectly with the roots rocker numbers, and, when he shifted to piano, the band sounded like a mix between Lowell George-era Little Feat with a dash of The Band and a touch of the Black Crowes." - Ft. Myers News-Press
"Lucky for them they showed up for Joe Firstman. The multi-talented barefoot musician stomped the ground and his piano keys through a set that had echoes of Bruce Hornsby & the Range or The Band." - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"He's growing. His songs are more shambling and rootsy and the production is less slick than his Atlantic output. He's still got that special effervescence and crazy versatility, but his voice is emerging stronger and clearer with each subsequent release." - The Easy Reader
"He's a songwriter to keep an eye on." - The Providence Journal - See more at: http://www.eventsfy.com/event/the-cordovas-joe-firstman/columbus/Rhumba-Cafe/2014-07-06#sthash.9QlK76dO.dpuf
After releasing two albums last year, a debut self-titled full-length and a live album recorded in Nashville, Cordovas announce their return on tour this spring and summer throughout the US, including an appearance at the Wakarusa Music Festival. The tour will feature the band’s co-founder Joe Firstman as the supporting act, who recently released his 7th studio album, Swear It Was A Dream.
The name Joe Firstman could very well one day become the go-to name in literature about this century, as his story reads like a true American pioneer. He bought an $18 cross-country Greyhound ticket from his home in North Carolina to Los Angeles, arriving with a beat-up guitar and head full of songs. First came the Hollywood gigs, then the big deal with Atlantic Records, the four-year job as bandleader on Last Call with Carson Daly, and national tours with rock idols like Sheryl Crow, Jewel and Willie Nelson.
“I like the journey I’m on,” says Joe Firstman. “I think the stories in the music set Cordovas apart.” Cordovas allows Firstman the perfect opportunity to take his stories, stretch them out with a full rock sound and fill in any missing pieces with the brilliance of Jon Loyd and Toby Weaver, all while appealing to his love for the 70s and southern blues and rock.
The trio of Cordovas is truly a band to experience live. Their performances are always changing and evolving, never giving the same show twice, but their spontaneity is far from chaotic. With signature harmonies and rugged soulfulness, Cordovas complete the picture with accomplished musicianship.
“While it’s tempting to characterize the Cordovas as a throwback to 1970s-era Capricorn label artists, that designation falls short. The Cordovas aren’t tethered to a specific geographical location but to a set of ideas: pure musicianship and earnest songwriting. Their songs would sound just as good played live on your neighbor’s porch, stripped of the bells and whistles that a studio session could provide. Simply put, the Cordovas are a must-see live act.” – - Edith Johnson, Easy Reader News
“In the songs of Joe Firstman, sensitive young men prowl the hills of Los Angeles, searching for fame and beauty, only to find self-destructive behavior and egos gone wild. While Hollywood’s peaks and pitfalls have been prominently charted by songwriters from Don Henley, Stevie Nicks and Jackson Browne to Warren Zevon, Firstman aims to reinvent the milieu for his own generation.” – - Jim Farber, New York Daily News
