Homage to Nelson Mandela: Ernest Dawkins’ Memory in the Center, an Afro Jazz Opera
For the official opening-night show of the Chicago Jazz Festival – and the finale of this year's Made in Chicago concert series – local composer, saxophonist and AACM veteran Ernest Khabeer Dawkins has created a work in honor of the late South African president that promises to do many of the inspiring things Mandela said music could do.
"Homage to Nelson Mandela: Ernest Dawkins' Memory in the Center, an Afro Jazz Opera" will unite jazz musicians from Chicago, London and South Africa to celebrate their shared role in sounding the alarm against apartheid and helping energize the freedom movement. In basking in the dream of equality for all, the work will celebrate not only Mandela, great champion of human rights, but also the two heroic women in his life: Winnie Mandela, his first wife, and Graça Machel, his widow.
Corey Wilkes Quintet
In the best sense of the word, Corey Wilkes has been an upstart since emerging on the Chicago scene in the early 2000's, fresh from honing his craft in New Orleans. A product of Rich South High School in suburban Richton Park and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he has used his outsize natural gifts as a trumpeter to shift effortlessly from the most groove-tight hard bop and funk to the most wide-open free jazz. Whether performing with an iconic talent like Meshell Ndegeocello, occupying the inimitable Lester Bowie's trumpet chair in the Art Ensemble of Chicago or livening up Millennium Park with his Improvised Soul Projekt, he brings a fulsome spirit to bear.
Today, Wilkes will lead a quintet including the exciting young vibraphonist Justin Thomas; keyboardist, onetime Miles Davis associate and all-around musical guru Robert Irving III, bassist Junius Paul and drummer Xavier Breaker. Where Corey's stylistic wheel will stop, only he knows.

ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE:Attendees can expect limited capacity at Navy Pier's lineup of events, as the attraction enforces the safety measures it put in place when it reopened in early June. All guests are required to wear a face mask and remain at least six feet apart from other groups of visitors. In addition to new cleaning measures that focus on frequently sanitizing surfaces that are frequently touched by guests, Navy Pier has also installed hand sanitizer stations throughout the venue and hired social-distancing ambassadors to remind visitors to maintain space between themselves and other parties.
Corey Wilkes is a world-renowned trumpeter, composer, and producer. Across the globe he has made a name for himself as one of the best improvisational trumpet players of today. He is best known for his soulful breath-taking riffs and unforgettable avant-garde sounds that captivates his audience every time he takes the stage. Wilkes’ passion for hip-hop comes out with amplified intensity as well as his love for jazz that sings through his raw brass horn, with well-nurtured maturity. Improvised Soul Projekt extends Wilkes’ vision for the future of instrumental music. The musicians in this group are much more than accomplished “jazz” musicians. They are spiritually endowed, next level Sound Scientist who have mastered rituals in music like no else – that raise consciousness while healing the mind, body and spirit. They are master healers through music, opening one’s pineal gland (third eye) and awakening infinite possibilities of wellness

JAZZ POSTCARD SERIES:
There is something special about receiving a postcard in the mail! Postcards are reminders that someone is thinking of you while they are away. They express joy but also longing: wish you were here! Postcards are short and (bitter)sweet. At a time when we all wish we could be together more, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival has invited more than 30 jazz musicians to send musical postcards to a community of their choosing. Each artist has selected a location and a time to play for 30 minutes on four dates this summer (July 25th, July 30th, August 14th, August 23rd). On each of these dates, listen out for the sound vibrations of these postcards across Chicago. We are not advertising the locations in order to keep gatherings small, but you can find hints and perhaps you'll cross paths with these pop up programs. Miss you! Wish you were here! Love, Hyde Park Jazz Festival
We will also document as many of the Postcards as possible and make them available on our website. Stay tuned!

Muses: An Evening of Jazz
Thursday, Apr 18th, 2024
6:00 PM–9:00 PM
Advanced ticket purchase required.
SOLD OUT
Muses: An Evening of Jazz is a curated night of jazz, poetry, and nostalgia that explores inspirations behind the exhibit A Love Supreme. Enjoy signature cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and live music. Headlining the night will be a highly anticipated performance by Grammy-nominated musician, Emmy Award winner, and producer/composer Corey Wilkes.
Multidisciplinary artist and educator, Marvin Tate, will kick off the night by reciting an original poem commissioned for this evening of rhythm and rhyme. Tate combines performance art, with improvisation, poetry, spoken word, and song, to create powerful and personal narratives about relationships and the struggle to be present in a constantly changing world. Experience personal video materials of Chicago’s South Side history and culture that are typically kept in private collections with UChicago Arts’ South Side Home Movies Project.
At 7:00pm hear a special rendition of A Love Supreme interpreted by Elmhurst University Faculty Jazz Combo. At 8:00pm Corey Wilkes will captivate audiences with his mesmerizing trumpet playing and unique vision. Wilkes' collaborations extend beyond the world of music, as he has also worked with visual artists such as Theaster Gates, Nick Cave, Lucy Slivinski and Rashid Johnson, creating multi-disciplinary performances that blend music, art, and culture.
A Love Supreme and this program are part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities. It is sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and in part by a grant from the League of Chicago Theatres and ComEd.
Sponsored in part by Illinois Humanities. With programming in partnership with Elmhurst University Department of Music.
A Love Supreme: McCormick House Reimagined is co-curated by Norman Teague and Rose Camara. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Chipstone Foundation.
Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Illinois General Assembly through the Illinois Arts Council Agency, as well as by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations.
Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed by speakers, program participants, or audiences do not necessarily reflect those of the NEH, Illinois Humanities, our partnering organizations or our funders.
