Known by her fans as "The Flapper Girl", Erin McDougald, a Chicago-based, improvisational jazz singer embodies the sensuality and fierce emancipatory attitude of an audacious fashionista and political-egalitarian in her personality and progressive artistry. Her familial approach in addressing her audiences reveals her charm and witty intellect as she educates and insists: "flappers" were suffragists-- with libidos, rhythm, style and social cachet. No stranger to the ideals of a "resistence", this flapper girl of modern vocal jazz has a reputation synonmous with marrying vintage foundations with contemporary concepts in her rhythmic, daring interpretations of a musical catalogue that expands everything from Swing-Era standards to Post Bop and the avant-garde while interspersing her own prolific compositions. Erin's ability to borrow music from other genres and infuse a jazz treatment has garnered her fans of all ages and musical-collaborators of global renown.
Erin McDougald's "evocative artistry" (-Chicago Music Guide) stems from her multi-octave vocal range, which is enveloped in a warm array of colors that range from clear as a tuning fork to dusty and seductive. Lyricist-composer Gene Lees compared Miss McDougald's malleability this way: "an incredible range with this provacative edge... switches her sound like a chameleon shifts colors... knocks me out". Her phrasing as described by Jazz Improv Magazine is "thrilling... worldly... positively mercurial" and her pithy concepts and reimagined versions of obscurities and standards are "nothing short of brilliant" (Cedar Walton). Tom Harrell praises her "magical ballads" and David Liebman succinctly states "baby girl swings her ass off". Erin has headlined venues from Chicago to NYC to San Francisco to Paris and almost everywhere in between --with crowds at capacity when she headlined the Heritage Stage at The Chicago Jazz Festival and sold out rooms in formiddable venues such as at The Jazz Showcase, Green Mill, Green Dolphin Street, Smalls, 54 Below and Metroplitan Club, among others. The Chicago Tribune's Rick Kogan honors her "ebullient, deeply soulful singing". Having appeared and or collaborated with luminaries Nicholas Payton, Paul Wertico, Howard Levy, Carlos Henriquez, Ira Sullivan, Roy Hargrove and Von Freeman, among others, City Talk magazine, with a cover-feature story described her best" "For the [few] minutes she's singing a tune, nothing else exists... She is a portrait of elegance, composure and class as her head bobs on a slender neck like a flower bending in the breeze... you hear the inflection and nuance in her voice... in short, she swings". Downbeat critic adds "Erin's is one of the finest and freest voices in jazz OR pop today".
