AUSTIN TX, USA - I'm on my way back to LA after a more than successful debut SXSW appearance. I have had a couple of chances to play at SXSW before that never materialised so it was good to finally play.
We spent three days in Austin with Chief White LIghtning reheasrsing and writing some new material with Jonas Wilson. Jonas played on the upcoming album and was an absolute joy to play with live. He is a multi-instrumentalist and really brought something special to the live show. Hopefully we'll be touring with him as a member of the band in June.
The show at The Blackheart was to a capacity audience who were a great audience. The evening ending with Josh kicking over beers on the bar as he climbed up to play a guitar solo on 'City's Alive'....as usual!
I'm now looking forward to a 36 hour train journey home to LA with no phone or email. A mini holiday for me!
LOS ANGELES, USA - It has been an extremely busy time since my last update which is a very good, if slightly exhausting thing!
The end of 2017 saw me helping out on Gary Numan's 2017 'Savage' US tour as part of his team. It's a real family atmosphere so was great fun as always. It was good to have a few weeks off over Christmas before getting straight back into things in the New Year.
I moved into a new rehearsal studio in downtown LA with Nightmare Air that is a great place to rehearse and even has windows. Windows! In a rehearsal space! Who would have thought it?!
January saw me attend Winter NAMM in Anaheim thanks to my Paiste endorsement again. NAMM has got even bigger (if that was possible) and it was good to meet up with endorsers, Paiste, Vater and Drumtacs and create a shopping list of all the new instruments that I want!
LOS ANGELES, USA - It seems as if I start all my news posts with 'It's been a while since I've posted' but it has and I have good reason for that!
It's been a bit of a whirlwind since my last post way back in July! After signing with 'Blank City Records' with The Saint James Society I played the 'Echo Park Rising' festival with the band and then had to hot foot it to Long Beach to begin rehearsals with 'El Camino Media's' new signing Chief White Lightning.
Chief White Lightning' s new album is released in 2018 and I have been very busy playing live with him and keeping up with his gossip column life, getting ready for a full tour in 2018. As well as these I have started drumming with Happy Hollows, the new project from Sarah Negahdari (Silversun Pickups) in support of their latest album 'Concordia.'
Throw in a full US tour with Andrew W.K. as drum tech and then another full US tour with Gary Numan as tech and my three DJ residencies in LA I think we can say it's been a busy old end to 2017!
LOS ANGELES, USA - I may have been a bit quiet on here but I have been anything but behind the drums!
The start of June saw me sign a record deal with LA's 'Blank City Records' with The Saint James Society. 'Blank City Records' are releasing the new 'Covered in Blood' EP of cover songs by The Saint James Society. We'll be following this release up with some live dates before a return to the studio to record some new songs.
I have been playing with Long Beach's Chief White Lightning and having a lot of fun with their shows. We supported LA cult band Fartbarf at an absolutely packed Alex's Bar in Long Beach. Such a great venue and such a good time. It really is good to play drums in a band that know how to have fun live.
I have also been rehearsing with another LA based band that I can't say too much about at the moment but it has been going very well and will hopefully be able to announce some gigs with them soon. Their songs are pretty amazing and fit my drumming style perfectly. Pretty excited!
Aside from the drumming I have continued to DJ as resident DJ for every Thursday Happy Hour 5pm-10pm at Bigfoot East as well as my monthly DJ slot with Marc Sallis at Thirsty Crow on the first Sunday of the month. I am now also resident on the first and third Fridays of the month at Bigfoot East as well. It's a lot of fun DJing and I hope to be doing some more of this.
I am also gearing up for a US, UK and very brief (one date!) Mexican tour as drum tech and merch manager with Andrew WK at the end of the year and hopefully more next year. So I may have been quiet on here but rest assured I am being far from quiet in real life!
LOS ANGELES, USA - It may have taken a longer time than expected (a slight understatement!) but The Diamond Lights' debut album 'Twin City' finally has a release date of 31st March 2017 on London's Crystal Twin Records.
You can pre-order the album from iTunes now and get the new track 'Rome' instantly. Here is the link: https://tinyurl.com/TwinCity-LP
We even have two new videos to come that are looking great and will be on the way before release. Other than The Diamond Lights I have been busy with The Black Windmill, getting ready for another single release in the next few months and The Saint James Society has an E.P. coming out on LA's 'Blank City Records' in April. Only ever play in bands that start with a 'The'. That's my new years resolution!
I have also been getting another new project off the ground with Kym Priess, the ex-bassist of Kiki Bridges and looking forward to another couple of possible projects. Busy, busy, busy!
LOS ANGELES, USA - After an extremely busy and intense few months now comes the waiting game for various projects to come to fruition.
Whilst I was back in the UK I met with our producer Charlie Russell at Dean Street Studios to finally get the remainder of The Diamond Lights' album mixed. I'm biased but I must say it's sounding pretty massive. It is currently being mastered by the ever amazing Pete Maher, all the artwork is in place, the videos are being prepared and the release date is set for 24th Febraury 2017. It has taken YEARS for this to finally be realised for various reasons and it'll be a relief to get the songs out there with the hopeful promise of some US shows in support of it as well.
After a fairly quiet start to the year The Saint James Society had a great middle with our support for Faith No More at a sold out Troubadour a real stand out. Now comes more waiting! The new album is also due out early in 2017 with gigs and a short tour to support it. The Troubadour was one of the most enjoyable gigs I've ever played so can't wait to get going again with them in 2017.
To continue with the theme...I am playing with The Black Windmill at LA's Satellite on 3rd November and then it's a wait for the release of the album we recorded in the summer which is currently being mixed.
So things are busy behind the scenes but it doesn't involve a great deal of drumming. After getting a delivery of new sticks from Vater it gives me a perfect excuse to get in the studio and get woodshedding, perfecting those Tony Allen grooves I have been learning and maybe get through The New Breed at last...maybe!
PORTSMOUTH, UK - I have barely had a chance to catch my breath the last few weeks! I love being busy but this has been BUSY! If there's no rest for the wicked then I have done something very bad!
I was lucky enough to play a headline show at LA's Bootleg Theatre and then go in to Station House Studios and record on a 1930s Slingerland Radio King for The Black Windmill's EP. As someone who only started drumming after hearing a recording of Gene Krupa play 'Big Noise From Winnetka' this was a special treat for me!
I got to play a small but great solo show with Isabella Glaudini working on some songs that we've written together in a PJ Harvey-esque style as well as a gig with Izzy and La Forza at Good Times At Davey Wayne's in Hollywood. In between we found some time to make an appearance in a film playing at a High School Prom. I've been seeing rather a lot of Izzy lately and there are some really exciting developments coming with Izzy so stay tuned.
In between a trip to the mountains for my birthday and an adventure in Tijuana I was very humbled to get to support Chuck Mosley and Faith No More with The Saint James Society at the legendary Troubadour. It was a dream gig where everything sounded and felt great and the sold out crowd were really into what we were doing. You don't get gigs like this very often. It was pretty memorable! There's an album and tour to come with The Saint James Society.
Right now I am back in the UK getting ready to put the finishing touches to the extremely long awaited THE DIAMOND LIGHTS album at Dean Street Studios in London with our producer Charlie Russell as well as preparing getting for a spot of drumming for The Duke Spirit's Olly Betts' wedding.
After that I think I might take a little break. I think it's time to stop being wicked and get some rest!
LOS ANGELES, USA - I've been hard at work in the studio learning songs for La Forza, The Black Windmill, Saint James Society, United Ghosts and Jimmy Lucido...as well as attempting to remember how The Diamond Lights songs go. That's a lot of tunes going around my head!
I just hope I remember to carry my little black book of song notes with me on Thursday. Thursday night is shaping up to be a busy old night for me as I play with La Forza at 10pm and then hotfoot it across town for the third residency for The Black Windmill at Bigfoot Lodge East. I wonder if I could manage to squeeze a third gig in somewhere en route?!
LOS ANGELES, USA - It's been a while since I've written here and there is so much that I want to let everyone know...but everything is under wraps and awaiting to be confirmed. It's frustrating but September is shaping up to be a big month for me internationally, I just have to be patient before I can say anything.
In the meanwhile I have been writing with Izzy from La Forza and having a lot of fun enjoying playing music without clicks or backing tracks again. It's easy to forget that music is meant to be fun sometimes. We've had loads of fun and now I am going to play a gig with Izzy's main band La Forza at El cid in a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to see how this pans out and also what will happen with our songs we have been writing together.
As for the other news....STAY TUNED!
LOS ANGELES, USA - I have been struggling a bit lately with bass drum pedals. My trusty old Pearl Power Shifter Eliminator is in the UK and I have been using a pretty basic pedal in the studio that broke so I tried to shift from chain drive to direct drive. Direct drive is exceptionally smooth and responsive but I just could not work it out. Having a solid, smooth pedal where the footboard has no movement...makes you realise how much you rely on the footboard having some movement!
I ordered the new Pearl Redline Eliminator chain drive that got delivered yesterday and straight out the box my right foot had found it's new best friend! This pedal is pretty incredible. I've spent the day playing around with everything and I think it's safe to say that this is the pedal for me. I'll never leave chain drive again, trust me!
LOS ANGELES, USA - I love being in the studio surrounded by everything but there really isn't anything to beat playing live. 2015 was quite a quiet year for me on the live work side so I cannot wait to get back out there tomorrow and play my first gig of the year and also my first LA gig.
LOS ANGELES, USA - Well, I've been in LA for three months now and despite the weather being beautiful and sunny I haven't had much time to work on my tan but I'm not complaining!
I came to LA and drum and drum I most certainly am. I am currently involved in recording writing and playing with Tee Pee Records' Saint James Society (http://thestjamessociety.tumblr.com/), Marc Sallis from The Duke Spirit/The Bulls, the solo project of Nightmare Air's Jimmy Lucido (http://nightmareair.com/), United Ghosts (http://www.unitedghosts.com/), the early days of a collaborative project of different LA musicians called The Black Windmill as well working hard to get all the tracks mixed and mastered for The Diamond Lights October release.
I'll see the sun some other day!
LOS ANGELES, USA - It's that time of year again! Thanks to my Vater family it's back down to Anaheim and a few more days and nights playing with all the new drumming toys. At least I'm more prepared for it than I was last year when it was all ever so slightly overwhelming!
LOS ANGELES USA - I love New York and I consider it my home. T's everything that I want in a city but sometimes you can't always be where you feel you should be! I have been offered so many gigs and recording opportunities on the west coast that it's off to see what LA has for me. What better way to bring in the new year and my new adventure than DJing last night on my arrival out west. Let's see what I can do here then!
LONDON HEATHROW - Today is the day that I finally fly to New York with a one way ticket. It's sad to be waving a temporary goodbye to the UK and all the people that I love but I am more than ready and excited to take on America. Come on then USA, let's see what you've got!
LONDON UK - I've been sent a track from LA from a potential new group that is being formed. If someone sat down to write a song specifically for me to play the drums on it would not be a million miles away from how this tracks sounds. I went straight into Crows Nest Studios to work on it and it felt so exciting. I hope something comes of this project. More to follow I hope...
LONDON - After 6 months of waiting, talking to lawyers, waiting, pulling my hair out and waiting a bit more, my O1 Visa for the USA has been approved. Extremely excited and a little scared to take my drumming to the US for the next 3 years and start a new drumming chapter.
MANCHESTER UK - Driving back from Manchester after Gary Numan's all too brief UK tour. It was really hard work and I am in a bit of agony after hurting my back but I'm starting to enjoy drum teching a lot. It's a different pressure from playing but there is a lot of pressure involved, a lot of hard work and a lot of fun. Gary is a top person to work for. The nicest man in rock.
Sitting behind Rich Beasley as he played the drums for Gary Numan 's first sold out show at London Forum was quite special. The reaction from the crowd for 'Are Friends For Electric' was amazing to feel onstage. Unfortunately I couldn't really enjoy it too much as I was pretty busy making sure the tom mic was in the right place and the snare staying tuned. Hard work but an amazing day.
First of three days rehearsal at London'd John Henry's Studios to prepare for drum teching on Gary Numan's mini UK tour. Good to meet up with everyone again and relearn how to set up Rich Beasley's monster kit! It really is a complicated old kit to be in charge of!
TEMPLECOMBE, SOMERSET UK - It's always good to get out of London for a bit especially if it means I get to do a spot of drumming in a large country pile in Somerset! I've been in the rolling countryside of the west country working on some very early demos with Toby Butler (The Duke Spirit/Roman Remains) fotr some potential future projects. It's early days but things are sounding very interesting for the future. Stay tuned!
BROOKLYN USA - I've been busy helping to demo new tracks for The Bushwick Hotel's upcoming second album. It's been good fun helping to craft the new songs and they're sound pretty big and Motownesque in places. It'll be interesting to see how they sound recorded.
BROOKLYN USA - I have been lucky enough to be rehearsing with Brooklyn's 'The Bushwick Hotel' whilst in New York at their Live By The Sword studios. It's early days and we'll see what happens but it's great to be part of a group set up again. Check them out on their website here: http://www.thebushwickhotel.com/
LONDON UK - I had a lot of fun spending two days in the company of Gary Numan and his band. A full days rehearsal at John Henry's followed by teching for Gary Numan's drummer, Rich Beasley at the sold out 'Convergence' show at the Royal Festival Hall.
The whole Gary Numan crew and band are a great team. Hard work but it was a lot of fun. If you squint you may be able to see me lurking behind the drum kit!
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/photos/live-photo-gallery/gary-numan-at-londons-royal-festival-hall
LONDON UK - I had a lot of fun doing a spot of recording and rehearsing with North London garage/beat group The Teamsters. We managed to record 5 songs in One Cat Studios where I managed to rock the sound up a bit! Hopefully there will be more recoding and gigs coming in the future.
http://www.moodymonkeyrecords.com/play-along-with-the-teamsters.html
BROOKLYN USA - I'm very pleased to say that I am now an official Drumtacs artist. Drumtacs are an amazing product that eliminate unwanted ring without deadening the sound. It's goodbye Moongels for me and hello Drumtacs! You should really check them out, they're amazing!
http://www.drumtacs.com/
LOS ANGELES USA - It was good to have a play with United Ghosts at their LA studio. Having played drums for their mini UK tour last year we went over some new tracks and and got to hang out. There could ossibly be some further news on this later...
ANAHEIM CA, USA - Slightly overwhelmed by the size of NAMM but it was good to meet with lots of people. The new Paiste Stewart Copeland hi-hats were amazing.
BROOKLYN USA - I'm very excited to have been invited to the Winter NAMM 2015 conference in Anaheim, CA at the end of January by Paiste America. I can't wait to check out all the new gear and have a chance to be a real drum geek!
MANHATTAN, NY USA - It was great to meet some great drummers at the Drummers Collective Drum Hang last night. I got a pack of Drumtacs from JC Clifford. These are the best 'sound control pads' I've ever used. This could be the end of Moongels. Check them out http://www.drumtacs.com/
LONDON UK - It's my last gig with Big Joe Louis for a while before I relocate to New York for a few months. Sad and exciting all at the same time.
LONDON UK - Today was the last days recording in The Crow's Nest Studios for THE DIAMOND LIGHTS album, due for release in 2015. I was left in the studio with Olly from The Duke Spirit/F.U.R.S for a few hours. Never leave two drummers alone in a recording studio...percussion opus on the way!
Thanks to everyone who came to Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen last night - including our new friends Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker - We thoroughly enjoyed it and it sounded like you did too!
It may have been our last live show for the foreseeable future but we are not dead! In fact we are in the studio next week to record some new tracks...We will continue to release new music for you and WILL be back live in the distant future...Thanks for all your support so far and hopefully into the future...In the meantime BUY SOME MUSIC!
LONDON UK - Following on from Paiste I am extremely proud to officially be a Vater Drumstick endorser.
I have been playing Vater for the last decade and can't imagine a gig without my trusty Fusion Wood or Manhattan 7A's. I look forward to a long lasting relationship with Vater.
THE DIAMOND LIGHTS video for "Dance For Your Life' is now on YouTube ahead of the 15th September release of the single.
It was a tight squeeze getting a drumkit into a toilet cubicle but we managed it...just!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hRDqreghcg
I can officially announce that 'Dance For Your Life', the second THE DIAMOND LIGHTS single, is finally being released on Monday 15th September by Crystal Twin Records.
Once again it was recorded by Olly Betts (F.U.R.S) and Luke Ford (The Duke Spirit) at The Crow's Nest Studios and mixed at Dean Street Studios by Charlie Russell. Can't wait for it to finally be out there.
I'm pleased, excited and chuffed to officially be announced as the new baby boy in the Paiste Cymbals endorser family...I'm also extremely proud to be the second Bretton Hall College, Popular Music Studies graduate to be endorsed by Paiste, alongside Leon Cave. I'm sure Geraldine would have given us both a smile.
