Kimberly Jae is an award-winning, Pushcart nominated Slam poet, published writer and educator, who is also disabled. In 2018, she became the 2018 Grand Slam Champion of Steel City Slam, 2018 BOSS Slam Queen of Steel Slam Champion, 2018 Steel City Slam IWPS Rep, 2018 Womxn Slam Champion, three-time Pajama Jammie Jam Slam Champion as well as 2018 Finalist for Baltimore's Slammageddon Slam, going on to ranking one of the top 30 slam poets in the world by Poetry Slam International in 2018. In 2019, she won numerous slams in both the US and Canada, making finals for a team in the US and in Canada as well as winning Hot Damn, It's a Queer Slam. Before she could compete, she survived the first of what would be a series of strokes. These strokes and the condition that led to them, caused disability as well as a language-based disability called Aphasia. She was a world ranked, award winning writer and slammer who struggled to speak and had to relearn the craft of writing and fluently speaking to find her artistic voice. Since the stroke in 2019, she has been awarded multiple fellowships, as well as winning a number of slams making it to finals and nationals in the USA, Canada and United Kingdom. Her full-length manuscript, Baptism, was shortlisted for the 2021 Sexton Prize. Kimberly Jae’s poems and videos have been published domestically, internationally, and online including the Poetry Foundation, the Poetry Coalition, Alt Minds Literary Magazine (CA), Hawai’i Review (US) and anthologies including, In the Shadow of the Mic: Three Decades of Slam Poetry in Pittsburgh. Recent and forthcoming publications include inclusion in the anthology, In Between Spaces: An Anthology of Disabled Writers (November 2022, Stillhouse Press) and Tupelo Quarterly. In 2022, she was selected as the 2022 Visionary Arts Poetry Prize in Honor of Reza Abdoh winner as well as nominated for the Pushcart Prize. In 2023, she was named Finalist for the Maverick Award.
When not writing or traveling, she is making jewelry, menu planning and dish creating, or daydeaming.

Kimberly Jae guest curates for Zoeglossia's August Poem of the week series. This month's curation, On Navigating Love & Disability Across North America, I am beyond honored to feature the work of Lisa Shen (Canada,) Merrick Soleil (USA,) Charlie Petch (Canada,) and a new poem of mine! These accomplished, published writers, a mix of award winning, performance artists, slam poets, and visual artists, have crafted poems of their take on love and acceptance through the lens of their life and disability. They bring their voices and their styles. Their experiences. They explore these motifs not in the box we are often placed in, a lens of pity, but through their authentic experiences. It is the goal of this month’s series to convey that we love. That everyone yearns for acceptance, including us. That we find acceptance within ourselves first. And you, dear reader, I strive for you to finish this series and see us not as a structured box of victimhood, full of stereotypes but as living, breathing humans who live, love, experience, hurt, grow, heal regardless of any brokenness our bodies may have.
I want to thank @zoeglossia for giving me this opportunity! This was such an enriching and rewarding experience! I also want to thank the poets for trusting me with their work!
