The beauty of the late summer sun setting among the trees near gorgeous Lake Arrowhead, is commandingly enhanced by the bright sounds of Jazz in Blue Jay. Nestled atop one of the Blue Jay’s busiest shopping centers, the rhythmic sounds of saxman Michael Paulo and his All Star band jammed thru the night. In my 13 years at The WAVE,
I had surprisingly never ventured the magnificent ascent to the Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear area. I was asked to emcee the most recent concert, and jumped at the chance. What a blast, and what a sensational cause at the same time. The Blue Jay Jazz Foundation is a scholarship initiative that sponsors the appreciation of Jazz Music (and other genres), to L.A. Rotary, and San Bernardino schools. Since 1991, Blue Jay Jazz has successfully assembled at least 3 concerts each summer, and has featured Poncho Sanchez, Jeff Kashiwa, Greg Adams, Phil Upchurch, The Four Freshman, and the great “West Coast Cool” trumpeter, Jack Sheldon.
Last week, the very energetic Michael Paulo assembled a strong line-up of Jazz All Stars including Dean Cortez, and Kimo Cornwell from Hiroshima, plus Dave Bennett. It was a strong fusion of progressive Jazz, R & B, Blues, and outright Rock n’ Roll with Steely Dan and Steve Winwood material standing out.
This Thursday night you can catch the final concert of the season with Jazz City, a dynamic five piece band, with special guest Gloria Loring, a brilliant singer in her own right, and mother of superstar Robin Thicke. My thanks to Chris Levister, President of Blue Jay Jazz, who is also a Wave listener with a beautiful voice, and used her voice well in igniting hundreds of people in the audience to welcome me to the stage by singing the “947 The Wave” jingle. Blue Jay Jazz Foundation secretary and Rim High School Music Director Karen Tomlinson will also appear in this Thursday nights show.

Traffic Jam, a tribute to the Steve Winwood, Dave Mason and the music of Traffic has been reformed with a new lineup launching in 2019. Orginally formed by Bruce FitzSimmons in 2013, the new lineup includes Bruce on vocals, Keys and Guitar, Jon Scarantino on Bass, Dan Lehner on Guitar, Keys and Mandolin & Vocals, Kevin Glassel on Drums and Thom Van Ourkerk on Sax, Flute, Keyboards, Congas & Vocals.
Thom brings that incedible 'swiss army knife' utility that bridges all the best Winwood material from Spencer Davis (I'm A Man, Gimme Some Lovin') Traffic (Dear Mr. Fantasy, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys) to Blind Faith (Can't Find My Way Home, Had To Cry) and Winwood's solo work like Roll With it and Higher Love".
Jon covers all the Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi vocals like Feeling Alright, We Just Disagree, Only You & I Know, Light Up or Leave Me Alone and Rock & Roll Stew. Dan Lehner enjoys dual roles of Guitarist and Musical Director and Kevin Glassel combines with Jon to provide the backbone and rhythm section for this Classic Rock Tribute.
Special props go out the Dave Bennet (Guitar/Vox), Roy Swedeen (Drums) and Hiroshima members Kimo Cornwell (Keys) and Dean Cortez (Bass) who made up the original Traffic Jam. TRAFFIC JAM is now acceopting bookings for the Spring of 2019. Here's wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Cheers

A Celebration of Jeremiah MacKay
Alan MacKay, Patty McDonald
Alan MacKay’s bid was the first and only one accepted for this print of “The Piper” by Patty McDonald.

There were kilts and tears, music and laughter. There were words of comfort and words of praise. It was an event that lived up to its name: a celebration of the life of Deputy Jeremiah MacKay.
This fund-raiser was intended not just to raise money for the MacKay family but to show the community’s gratitude for the sheriff’s deputy’s service.
The ballroom at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa was filled to capacity, with hopeful people waiting outside for a chance to go in.
The evening began with a bagpipe tribute to MacKay, who himself was a piper, by Steve Moeller. That was followed by Boy Scouts from Troop 251 posting the colors and leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The evening was short on speeches and big on music and fun. Holland Lowe, who coordinated the festivities, welcomed all the guests and introduced Brad Mercer, the evening’s emcee.
Two men who knew MacKay well spoke briefly about their colleague.
Michael “Ziggy” Siegfried, a detective from the Yucaipa sheriff’s station, said the “loss of Jeremiah MacKay was the most tragic day in the modern history of the San Bernardino sheriff’s department.
“And yet,” he added, “it was our finest hour.
“Jeremiah used to say, if you’re not willing to walk toward gun fire, you’re in the wrong job. Jeremiah,” Siegfried said, addressing his former partner, “you were a great cop and more importantly a great man. Be at peace.”
Prior to his remarks, Siegfried sang an Irish song he said MacKay used to sing. He taught the audience the chorus and had everyone—including Jeremiah’s parents, Alan and Dawn, and his wife, Lynette, singing along.
Siegfried was followed by Capt. Rick Ells of the Twin Peaks station, who said he had been Jeremiah MacKay’s patrol sergeant in San Bernardino.
“Losing Jeremiah MacKay was an extremely difficult time for us in Twin Peaks,” Ells said. “The psychologist asked us what we remembered about him. He was a loud dude!” the captain exclaimed.
He presented Lynette MacKay with a $500 check from the Citizens on Patrol.
“Rather than mourn the loss of a man like Jeremiah MacKay,” said Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, “let us rejoice such a man lived.
“His children lost a father, his wife lost a husband, his parents lost a son. It’s time for the community to embrace this family,” Donnelly said.
Embrace the family is exactly what the folks at the fund-raiser did, with many folks offering hugs to the entire MacKay clan.
That love extended to the two auctions—live and silent. As John Wood got ready to auction off everything from a leaf blower to a year’s worth of martial arts classes to snowboards and artificial turf, he told the audience he’s not an auctioneer.
“I’m a separator,” Wood said. “My job is to separate you from your money.” He was assisted in that task by Allison Banner, who held up the placard with the catalog number of each auction item.
The most touching moment in the live auction was when Wood began the bidding for a giclee print of “The Piper,” a painting done by local artist Patty McDonald.
Alan MacKay’s hand shot up with a bid of $100. Wood immediately closed the bidding and handed the framed work to the father. He then held up a second print of “The Piper,” which Alan MacKay bought for his daughter-in-law Lynette.
Throughout the evening folks found their way to the room where the silent auction was set up. Many kept circling around their favorite items, protecting their bids. There was a mad dash just before the silent auction closed as bidders made final entries on the bid sheets.
So many items had been donated to this fund-raising event, about 40 were put into a raffle as the organizers simply ran out of room. Between bands, Mercer raffled off everything from bottles of wine to a guitar.
The three bands played throughout the evening, with 60 Grit opening the event with their bluesy sound. After the live auction concluded, Traffic Jam paid tribute to the music of Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, drawing a number of folks out onto the dance floor.
The evening ended with L.A. Zeppelin’s tribute to that band’s great music. It was during one of their sets that Holland Lowe’s favorite moment of the night took place.
“I loved it,” she said, “when Alan and Dawn (MacKay) danced and celebrated.”
The event, Lowe said, raised about $35,000 for the MacKay family.

Bands To Help Celebrate Deputy's Life

Three bands will be part of the tribute to slain Detective Jeremiah MacKay, who died while on duty on Feb. 12. Folks on the mountain—some who knew him and others who wish to celebrate his life—have organized a fund-raiser for MacKay's family on March 16 at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa.
After enjoying a buffet dinner, guests will be treated to the talents of three local bands: L.A. Zeppelin, Traffic Jam and 60 Grit.
Featuring the vocal talents of Mike Lamper, L.A. Zeppelin brings the sounds of Led Zeppelin to life. Lamper is joined by Jeff Ballew on lead guitar, Ron Davis on drums and John Paul Joel on bass and keyboard.
Listen for Zeppelin favorites like “Good Times Bad Times,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Dancing Days” and, of course, the iconic “Stairway to Heaven.”
Traffic Jam, a tribute to the music of Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton, is made up of Dave Bennett on guitar and vocals, Dean Cortez on bass, James “Kimo” Cornwell on keyboard, Roy Swedeen on drums and Bruce Fitzsimmons on vocals.
The band, Fitzsimmons said, will play many songs from Winwood and Clapton’s careers, spanning Spencer Davis, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos and Traffic.
“We all know how much Jeremiah meant to the community,” Fitzsimmons said. “We’re very honored to participate and celebrate his memory.”
The evening will open with the blues of 60 Grit with Frank Orecchio on guitar, David Ferguson on vocals, Sean Motley on drums, Brian Haringa on bass and Jeremiah Kiser on harmonica.
The band plans to play old blues standards by Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton and B.B. King, Orecchio said. “It will be an amazing night. It’s easy to lose sight of why we’re doing this,” he added, “but Jeremiah would appreciate this.” Haringa was good friends with him so the band asked if they could contribute to the evening.
All this music will be tied together by guest emcee Brad Mercer, who graduated from Rim High in 1969. He went on to become a singer/songwriter, a radio personality, a record producer and a comedian.
In addition to food and music, there will also be silent and live auctions at the event. All proceeds will benefit the MacKay family.
Tickets are $40 for the entire evening, including dinner; $20 tickets are available for guests arriving after 8 p.m. for the music and auctions. They may be purchased online atwww.lakearrowhead.net, at the Lake Arrowhead Communities Chamber of Commerce office in Lake Arrowhead Village or at Coldwell Banker Sky Ridge Realty in Blue Jay.
