In 1999 at eighteen TerrEnce Young broke into the scene of drum and bass in Johnson City, TN. With a focus on quick change-ups and high-energy track selection, his style is fast and relentless. Learning on two belt-driven Numarks and a busted Gemini mixer in 1998, TerrEnce Young quickly discovered the style of drum and bass was best suited to his personal energy. Buying his first set of decks later that year, he began refining his style to a mash up of jungle/jump-up/tech-step. 14 years later, you can now hear reggaeton/hip hop/drumstep/dubstep/neuro funk/liquid and all sub-genres of drum and bass in his performances.
TerrEnce Young has shared the stage with Dieselboy, Freakyflow, 6Blok, Soulslinger, Empress, Hooch, Xist, Allen Rockhouse,Kid Kollision, Huda Hudia, Sonico, SeBass, A La Intemperie and Lost Nomad. TerrEnce Young has played venues in Asheville, NC, Knoxville, Nashville, and Johnson City, TN, Atlanta, GA, Bowling Green, KY, Evansville, IN, Portland Or, Missoula Mt, San Jose Costa Rica, Quito Euador, Bogota Colombia
TerrEnce Young often shares the stage with his brother Allen Rockhouse, a turntablist with styles rooted deeply in hip hop and breaks. When the two perform together it is a multi-genre mash up from house to crushing dnb....with scratching and beat juggling provided from one of the southeast's best mixers, Allen Rockhouse.
Before your first trip to south America , what did you know about the scene around here?
Not much really. I went to ecuador first on a kayaking trip with some friends. Ended up traveling south into peru, bolivia and arg. I only found there to be discos with house music and salsa-reggeaton...ect. i wondered where the dnb scene was hiding.
How did you end up playing for 2 nights in Quito?
I work in Ecuador in the winters as a kayaking guide and have Friday and Saturday nights off. So I started looking on Google & Facebook for dnb in Quito and found two guys, David Pena in Cuenca .Then I met Zyborg in Quito along with Erick Aguilar who hosted the first event I played there with DJ Kik and Tara Hug. I very much enjoyed both shows and felt very well received by everyone involved.
In your opinion , whats lacking on electronic music nowadays?
headphones... beat matching. i learned how to mix on two tech(very old ones) and a broken Gemini mixer. Now people just cut and paste on their laptops. If you use a laptop because you produce your own music that's is OK but if you just use it to make a playlist this is not dj'ing!
Plans for the future, how do u see yourself in 5 years from now ?
Playing more shows and traveling with my daughter.
Best gig so far!
uff... man that is a tough question. I've played a lot of shows and like them all for different reasons. But at the top of the list is any show that I've played with my brother and best friend and Role Models.
How do you feel the Colombian crowd
I feel the same as I did in Ecuador!!! great crowd positive vibes from everyone! The attitude between dj's here is a bit different. There I felt always supported an welcome!
How was playing on Bogotrax for 5 different dates !
Amazing. I had no anticipation of playing that much. From playing in Ciudad Bolivar to the closing party each night was a different amazing experience.
Where else would you like to get a gig on southamerica !
I would really like to play Buenos Aries , Lima and Santiago.
How different is the dnb scene in your hometown form the one here in Bogota !
Much smaller for sure!! But they are similar in that they are both positive and supporting.
Expectations for your gig with Wicked breaks?
Well, firstly to see and preform with my buddy's Steve Mendez and Karen Tocar of A La Intempire....to crush the floor with all the new records I picked up this week and to make new friends in the scene there.
Cool Nes hope that works. let me know if you think of anything else. Also, do you know a nice hotel, not too expensive, near to cental or in Champinero? Looking for a room while me and lauren are there. Cheers!
