Beyond the aged look of the hands and the indexes, what it does successfully is respect the size of watches it tries to emulate. While the vast majority of modern "vintage" watches achieve the desired look, their true age is repliky Vacheron Constantin so often betrayed by their contemporary size. This isn’t the case (pardon the pun) with the DENCO53.Grand Seiko is celebrating several anniversaries this year. It's the 20th anniversary of the caliber 9S, which in 1998 was the first mechanical Grand Seiko movement in 40 years; it's also the 50th anniversary of Grand Seiko Hi-Beat. Seiko's first 36,000 vph movement, the 61GS, launched in 1968. Of the three limited editions being introduced this year, this is the most affordable, but it's no less handsome than its platinum and gold stablemates.With a published estimate on a cover watch set even higher than recent sales of the same watch, it raises the question: Have we finally reached the point where we can accept watches that have been restored demanding similar sums as untouched examples?



Where I was a little more caught off guard though was the results shooting watches on a table top. Again, shooting with a replica Richard Miller shorter lens often results in casting weird shadows over the subject or having to approach from strange angles. That wasn't an issue here. Additionally, I love how the lens and sensor renders the details of movements (NOMOS seemed an appropriate demo subject here).When it comes to internal Patek Philippe provenance – as in watches worn within the halls of the Geneva manufacture itself – few wristwatches can match this unique, specially modified ref. 3448 that was presented to Patek Philippe's former head of sales, Alan Banbery.Would I prefer if the Master Collection 190th Anniversary models were placed in a smaller 36mm or 38mm case size? You betcha. But it's otherwise hard to fault the new releases. The watch is on the larger side, but I hesitate to describe it as missing the mark, as the thin, sub-10mm profile will ensure it fits most modern-day wrists.
