In 1971, five energetic young musicians formed a band called "Better
Days & Co.". Over the next five years the group rose to become a major
force on the New England club and concert circuit. But rock bands
often have limited runs and in 1976 BD&C split to walk their own paths
in music and life.
It's now the late 2000s. In Virginia, Peter Wonson retired from a long
professional career. Wonson had been lead vocalist for the 60s/70s
band "Tracks", a stellar group of players expected by many at the time
to become national recording artists. Now it was time to write a
memoir of his youthful rock band experiences that would include
biographies for other groups of the era. Better Days & Co. was on his
list and he interviewed all the ex-members who could be located.
In 2011, "Old Times, Good Times: A Rock and Roll Story" was
released. Wonson reached out and convinced the BD&C alumni to reunite
and play at his book-release party. Although the original members had
not seen each other in 35 years, a couple of rehearsals melted away
the time and rekindled the magic.
After two reunion concerts, three of the founding members joined with
guitarist/vocalist Mike Colburn to continue as the Better Days Band.
Drawing on years of collective experience and widely varying styles
and tastes, BDB have spent a decade opening concerts and rocking area
clubs with an eclectic mix of pop tunes, B sides, R & B and Fusion.

Cast of characters:
Guitarist Steven Hirsch was with the original Better Days & Co. until
its demise in 1976. He went on to become a founding member of the
North End Rhythm Kings, a top draw on the Burlington scene in the late
70s / early 80s. The NERKs routinely packed RW Hunts concert club and
played a regular rotation at the legendary Nectars while the man
himself served fries over the counter. In addition to his playing
Steven brings decades of audio electronics experience to the table,
helping the band achieve a clean and balanced live sound.
Guitarist / vocalist Michael Colburn spent much of the 1970s in the
rough and tumble roadhouses of West Virginia, standing behind the
chicken-wire with a variety of hard working bands. He returned home to
Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1981 to play with local cult favorite Boomer
Sellers before moving on to stints with Pressure Point and Far Cry.
In less guarded moments, Mike will also admit to having played with -
not one, but two - Elvis Tribute bands. His musical style is unique
and original, always adding an interesting twist to arrangements.
Bobby Gagnier was a founding member of Anvil, the first post British
Invasion hard rock band in Vermont. Bobby later joined Better Days &
Co. to front the band and share percussion duties. When not on stage
with Better Days Band, he can often be seen backing local blues artist
Chris Kleeman and a host of other bands as a top 'on call'
player. Bobby is that rare drummer able to handle lead vocals and
harmony while keeping the beat with precision. When not behind the
kit, Bobby constantly listens to and absorbs diverse musical styles
and ideas.
Skip Truman joined on bass and vocals following the recent retirement
of original member Peter Lipnickas. A third generation musician
hailing from Hanover, NH, he spent his early career with recording
artists Tracks (as band mate of Peter Wonson) and The Davis Brothers
(top-earning regional group of its day). During a break from the road,
Skip is proud to have spent time in the studio tracking vocals with
fusion band Kilimanjaro. In recent years, he could be found on stage
with MoCombo, Soulfix and Dixie D. and the Diamonds. Skip came up to
speed with Better Days Band's existing repertoire at a record-setting
pace and adds a great new dimension to the act.
Summer's here and the time is right for dancing to the beat! The Better Days Band has booked many dates through the summer and are geared up to bring their unique arrangements of classic rock, funk, blues and R&B to a venue near you! Check out our schedule on the Shows link.
