HIS STORY
Derrick Knight is a dancer and singer that began his quest in entertainment as a night club promoter. From an early age he was inspired by music. His late mother took him to his first concert at the age of 3 to see MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. "I can still remember my first concert, it was MC Hammer. I had a had a little glow stick neckalace and whistle. I remember seeing the amount of people and feeling like it was not real. I will always remember the feeling music gave me as a kid. My Mama really fostered my creativity taking me to concerts, helping me rent out a theatre for my first show and motivating me to play sax in middle school band."
In elementary school Derrick auditioned for his school chorus and made the cut. Derrick was always eager to try out for a solo parts. He was recognized and awarded "Best Male Singer" by his peers and chorus teacher at his 5th grade graduation. In middle school Derrick went on to learn how to read music and perform classical instruments such as the Clarinet & Saxophone.
"In high school I decided to start organizing teen dances because I was recording and wanted a place to perform. I printed off flyers in the library and passed them around to friends at school. I was even selling glow sticks so I could make money to record. I remember being intrigued with MTV and wanting to find a way to impact culture, so I thought I would set out to unveil the mystique and develop my own path which is why I started promoting teen dances at a small local theater that I rented out for my parties." Milton High School also believed in Knight's talent and ability, voting him "Most Likely To Be Famous" his senior year.
After graduation, Derrick opened his own music venue in his hometown, and even went on to promote a successful weekly party at a night club in New York City's East Village. Knight also organized several other events and concerts where he continued networking with industry professionals, eventually landing a job as Creative Director at a law firm's production company in Florida because of his "driven" reputation. Contrary to his official title as "Creative Director" of the production company, Derrick felt like he wasn't able to properly express his creative talents. This lead Knight on a spiritual quest out West to realize his ultimate visions and dreams.
Curiousity, set backs, and heartbreaks spawned his soul searching early on in life. He was enlightened to mysticism because of these normal human experiences but always found solace in creating and making the best out of life. In college Derrick studied Philosophy of the World's Religions - which led to a major existential experience. This grew into an affinity for indigenous religions and cultures which are whispered in his music. "It was my only favorite college. I would find myself just sitting in math class staring out the window - looking at the trees and daydreaming. I felt miserable because I wasn't living my purpose. I told myself I have to get out of here and stop wasting time. I attempted college twice though and finally decided it wasn't the education I wanted or needed so I moved to LA."
Now, Derrick Knight says he's at a point where he feels comfortable enough to pursue his creative side. "Right now, I am recording music and writing about ideas inside that inspire me." Knight has also built an international establishment called MoonPad in Los Angeles which attract tourists and artists from all over the world. The purpose of Derrick Knight's MoonPad is to promote the message of communal living on the moon and intergalactic space travel. Derrick Knight hopes to be the first artist to perform a concert on the Moon. www.theMoonPad.com
