John Scholten is an Australian Singer/Songwriter currently sharing his time between Austin, Texas and Sydney. John's music is comprised of simple, heartfelt songs about complex things — Life, Love, Sorrow and Happiness — and is most easily categorized as Country/Folk/Americana.
It all began in 2001 when John attended a Kasey Chambers concert in his former hometown of Lismore (NSW) Australia. He was transfixed by the sight of Kasey’s dad, the legendary Bill Chambers, up on stage. That was all it took to motivate John to pick up the guitar again after a thirty-year hiatus. In January, 2010, John recorded his debut album “Shadows of the Heart” with his now friend, mentor and producer Bill Chambers. The result was an eleven-track release that received positive reviews in both his home Australia as well as introducing John to the Texas music scene.
Bill Chambers also produced John’s second album, “Music Refugee,” which was released early in 2013. This second release demonstrates John’s continued growth as a songwriter as well as adding new layers of musical versatility and lyrical complexity. Matt Lawrence of Country Music Capital News says with Music Refugee, John "has most certainly found his sound" and adds that "This second album... takes all of the positives of his debut and goes well beyond."
John recently performed at a variety of festivals and singer/songwriter showcases across Australia and the Southern United States and continues to forge a reputation as a perceptive songwriter and engaging live performer.
In a review for Country Capital News magazine's May 2013 issue, reviewer Matt Lawrence writes:
The more I listen to this album the more it has become a vital part of my ever increasing collection of quality Australian country recordings. This second album release by Scholten takes all of the positives of his debut and goes well beyond. Without question, the self-proclaimed music refugee has most certainly found his sound. And that sound is born of a rich blend of borrowed Australian and American music tradition. It's earthy and above all, real. Recorded in Austin, Texas, and produced by Bill Chambers, the 12 tracks showcase much in the way of lyrical depth, with matters of the heart and the search for identity recurring themes. While it really is a complete package, standouts include Ten Pound Migrant, Getting Pretty Good At Feeling Bad, Simple Leap of Faith, Paper Planes and the title track. Special note must be made of the Scholten/Chambers co-write Had Me A Woman, which is grisly good fun. Definitely worth the price of admission.
