On the first day of Larry Miller picking up a guitar, he wrote his first ever song. Larry says "I just knew immediately this was what I was put on the planet for" and he firmly believed his future was going to be in Rock music after hearing some of the guitar greats - Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore.
“For me, my moment of inspiration was seeing Rory Gallagher live. I had never experienced anything like it. So loud, so gloriously on the edge of total mayhem, yet Rory was still totally in control. How could I not do this too! Like Rory I’d work under my own name, with a band. I’d do all the writing, singing, producing, playing and leading.”
Very quickly, Larry found his own Blues/Rock style, and has been constantly refining it. He is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, with a love for his music which is simply infectious.
One of the hardest working musicians on the live music scene, he was a regular headliner at The Marquee in London and produced a barnstorming set at the legendary Reading Festival. Larry Miller is now more popular than he’s ever been. His following is increasing constantly, along with media coverage.
Larry’s band features a superb rhythm section which normally includes ex Gary Moore drummer Graham Walker who not only played on Gary Moore’s famous blues albums, touring with him extensively but has also played with BB King, Albert King, Albert Collins, Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon and many more.

Hands up who has seen Larry live and wanted to relive the experience time and again? Well, now you can, with the release of this fantastic twelve track double disc. It comes as somewhat of a surprise that it's been such a long time coming considering that he has such a live following, but it's well worth the wait. If it's an overview of tracks from Larry's six studio albums you're after, then think again, that's not Larry's way. Not for him such an easy cop-out, even better, there are new tracks on here and how great to hear the audiences reaction. Opener Still Ain't Done With The Blues sets the tempo for what's to come, we only have to wait a couple of minutes for the first guitar solo. The tracks are long, clocking in at 7.05, this is the seventh longest on the album. There is one cover on here, track 2 on CD1, the Junior Wells classic from the 60's, Messin' With The Kid, although track 4 on CD2, Just As Blue As It Gets contains snatches from Voodoo Chile and Shadow Play. The pace drops slightly from power rock to power ballad for the next couple of tracks before cranking up again on 5 Gambler's Hill. One of the highlights for me opens Disc 2, the slide on Outlaw Blues, a definite change in style and tempo. 2 'Missy Mango' sweeps the acoustic interlude feel away, for the inevitable return to electric power. 3 Mad Dog is a brief return to traditional blues before the power rock of the aforementioned 4 Just As Blue As It Gets, fifteen minutes of fame indeed! 5 Calling All The Angels gives the listener's ears a rest, before the finale of 6 Backstabber Blues' Whether Larry is blasting out a blues-rocker, or hitting the heartstrings with a ballad, the key to him is his passion for the guitar. Mention has to be made of the wonderful musicians who have accompanied Larry for so long, drummer Simon Baker and Storm Warning's Derek White and Ian Salisbury on bass and keyboards. The album was recorded at various venues on the European tour Sept – Nov 2012, so if you were there, congratulations, you made a veritable contribution.
Clive Rawlings - Blues Matters
Nummers als "Delilah", "Old Cruel World" en "Calling all The angels" zijn echte pareltjes.
Still Ain't Done With The Blues".
In "Just As Blue As It Gets" zingt Larry duidelijk voor wie er nog mocht aan twijfelen. In deze kwartier durende "Just As Blue As It Gets" zijn verschillende andere songs verweven.

British guitarist Larry Miller is a popular live attraction with his rocking shows, and after six studio albums he has released a high-energy double live set, “Live & Outlawed” – mainly originals but with a few choice covers, both complete and in medley form – however, it’s not all ‘foot to the pedal’, with some balladry on offer too!
The music was recorded in front of enthusiastic audiences in Europe during 2012, and features, apart from Miller on guitar and vocals: Simon Baker (drums), Derek White (bass) and Ian Salisbury (keyboards), the band lending the necessary sympathetic backing to Miller’s fine guitar playing and singing.
The first disc kicks off in explosive style with the thunderous “Still Ain’t Done With The Blues”, which is followed by a ‘nod’ to one of Larry Miller’s main influences, the late, great Rory Gallagher . . . the version here of Junior Wells “Messin’ With The Kid” is pretty faithful to Gallagher’s timeless interpretation on his “Live In Europe” album.
Miller and band like to stretch out, with some lengthy tracks here . . . the melodic tale of “The Girl That Got Away” being an example, with some lovely Gary Moore-flavoured leads; and also “Delilah” . . . a slow blues, with more delightful and tasteful guitar work from the man himself. The tempo changes on the rocking “Gambler’s Hill”, with the first disc ending with the 11:57 of “Cruel Old World” . . . packed again with sweet guitar and a fine vocal, with sterling support from the band.
The steel slide guitar of Miller kicks off the second disc opener, “Outlaw Blues” – again possibly inspired by Rory Gallagher, who always slipped a couple of acoustic numbers into the live show; it’s followed by the high-energy rocker “Missy Mango” and equally energetic “Mad Dog”, with the keyboards of Ian Salisbury featuring. Best of all however is probably the 14:27 of “Just As Blue As It Gets” . . . featuring snippets of “Voodoo Chile”, “Steppin’ Out” and “Shadow Play”, as originally recorded by Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Rory Gallagher.
It’s easy to see from this release the appeal of Larry Miller and band, who obviously supply great night out . . . I’m sure his faithful fans will lap this up, and it’s definitely worth checking out for all fans of the ‘rocky end’ of the blues.

No More heroes any more? Not quite. Hendrix, SRV, Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore may all have departed but as Larry’s millennium album title suggests, he’s very much a ‘Man On A Mission.’
He’s paid his dues, released 6 studio albums and toured incessantly for longer than he cares to remember. And he’s inadvertently embedded his mission statement on his web site, when he tells us that he found his epiphany in Rory Gallagher: ‘So loud, so gloriously on the edge of total mayhem, yet in control’.
And it’s that meeting of in the moment intensity and fiery fretboard dexterity that gives Larry his edge, and makes this album a fair synopsis of his gut busting style. The main difference between now and the Larrycaster of old, is simply better material as evidenced by this live double album. His full tone and vibrato confidently ring into the night air and he’s boosted by the best band he’s ever had, anchored by drummer Simon Baker and bassist Derek White and given extra colour by the piano and organ of Ian Salisbury.
Larry feeds off an audience as evidenced by the opening riff drenched ‘Still Ain’t Done With The Blues’ and the extended ‘Messing with the Kid’. You can just imagine him at the lip of the stage, shaking his mane of hair, chin jutting forwards, guitar neck pointed skywards, almost lost in his own mayhem, but always just in control!
In the absent of his own heroes he quickly fills the gap with two Rory covers and a brace of self penned blues ballads ‘The Girl That Got Away’ and ‘Cruel World’ which both owe a lot to Gary Moore. Both songs benefit from long linear notes and a sumptuous tone colour, while the memorable coda to ‘Cruel World’ marks it out as one of Larry’s very best rock blues ballads.
He’s upped his game, delivered the songs and found the sort of connection with his audience worthy of his work rate. Sure Hendrix came from another planet, Stevie combined brilliant playing with showmanship, Rory’s played with stunning intensity and Gary delivered breath taking speed and technical ability, but from the opening exclamatory ‘yeah’, this could only be a Larry show. ‘Live And Outlawed’ provides those stellar moments when Larry matches his intrinsic sense of humour with the kind of white hot riffing that leads his congregation to punch the air.
There are Buddy Guy moments where he launches into a solo without a safety net, as befits an exciting guitar player whose incendiary licks transform a tub thumping ‘Missy Mango’ from a solid rocker into a song of ripping intensity.
He’s at his best on the stop-time rockers like ‘Gamblers Hill’ and ‘Mad Dog’, on which he encourages the crowd to join in his own personal mayhem. He sings: “I ain’t from Mississippi, but I’m a blues man, just as blue as it gets” with all the conviction and self belief that his own playing demands. And he segues into his own rock-blues heaven with Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Chile’, the Blues Breakers version of Memphis Slim’s ‘Steppin Out’ and some snappy riffing on Rory’s ‘Shadow Play’.
He dips back into ‘Outlaw Blues’ for the heartfelt ‘Calling All the Angels’ in a rare moment of cool restraint with some clean picked notes. And he finally lets rip on ‘Backstabber Blues’, with some fluid note flurries before he whips the crowd into a final frenzy.
Larry plays the blues with all the passion, intensity and conviction of his heroes. He may not be the very last man standing but he’s a Brit rock blues- rocker who proudly carries the rock-blues baton with all the pride and panache of an Olympic athlete. **** (4/5)
