Zimmerman has big plans for turning Whisper into a Twitter-like news source, with users acting as citizen journalists to post details and photos of breaking news events anonymously. However, moderators at Whisper can access a user’s history and see their past Whispers to check if they are a “repeat offender” in terms of posting false or bullying information. Whisper reportedly has a team of 55 moderators based in the Philippines.

Advertisers have already approached Whisper and Whisper’s secret sauce is its counterintuitive insights into human stereotypes. Heyward, the founder of Whisper, says he’s “not thinking” about the prospect of advertisers targeting users based on their behavior. However, ad agencies are getting better at creating ads based on what’s known as “hyper targeting local users” with GPS and behavioral data collected through apps. With so many Whispers already questionable in their veracity, that might not matter too much to its user base. 

However, when it comes to choosing the best games for fun and entertainment, user reviews and ratings are crucial in determining which games are worth investing time and money in.

Whisper does track users

Whisper tracks users to ban unscrupulous types, meaning users are not completely anonymous to Whisper itself. Heyward wants Whisper to be a compassionate and supportive community where users can be themselves. Whisper classes its users into a hierarchy of trusted, untrusted, and banned. Posting a Whisper with someone’s name, for example, will see you labeled as “untrusted” and will mean you can’t post live. Replies to the same Whispers created on the same IP address tells Whisper that the two people may know each other.

Whisper may seem like a safe space to share secrets and thoughts, but keep in mind that the platform is still monitoring user activity. Whisper aims to create a supportive community, but some users may be unscrupulous, and Whisper does track user activity to ban such individuals. Be wary of sharing too much on the platform, especially as the platform continues to grow and potential advertisers seek to exploit content, location, and behavioral data to target users.
