Monti Carlo was born in Turlock, CA September 3, 1985. He started singing around the age of 8 years old. His first gig was at the age of 10. He sang the star spangled banner at a family reunion. His early life was spent listening to The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Marvin Gaye among others. He developed a love for music that would endure. His grandfather bought him his first guitar with the condition that he would actually use it. He remembers, "When he bought me my first guitar my grandfather told me he didn't want it laying around collecting dust. He said it was an investment, that he was a businessman and that he didn't make bad investments. Of course I agreed. So, he bought me the guitar." He took guitar class his freshman year and in the middle of the second semester his grandfather passed away unexpectedly. He poured himself into the music and remembered the condition. He would practice 5-6 hours a day and slowly he began to improve greatly, "When I first began playing music I looked for artists to emulate. I listened and looked but couldn't find anyone. I almost gave up. One day my cousin came over my house after breaking into a car. He had a huge binder of CDs under his arm. He looked at my guitar opened the binder flipped a few pages, grabbed a CD and handed it to me. He said, "Here, I think you'll like this". I looked at this bright green disc and read the name of the band. "Jimi Hendrix and The Band of Gypsies". I put it on and I knew I had found it. I would sit in my room for hours playing along and figuring out as much as I could. After that I got into Sublime, The Red Hot CHili Peppers, Ben Harper, Jeff Buckley, etc. I started my first band with my best friend Frankie Silva and I realized that there's not a whole lot of people writing music. And that if I just kept writing I would have some songs that I could one day put out and begin doing music professionally." At the age of 19 he moved to Sounthern California to pursue a career in music. He moved in with Ternell Cooksie, a long time friend from from his hometown of Turlock. He worked odd jobs: waiter, perfume salesman, construction worker, security guard for about a year while pursuing a career in music. At 20 he decided he wanted to do volunteer work full time and traveled the United States helping various causes, public speaking, manual labor, fundraising, writing and organizing. He manage to see 40 of the 50 states. Three years later he returned to Southern California and got an office job that he eventually quit. "I couldn't do it. Sitting in an office all day. I gave it a shot. It just didn't take." He started playing music again and continued to bouce around. He had his first child with his longtime girlfriend, Patricia Gutierrez, at the age of 27. His second child came a couple years after. All the while he continued to write and record demos, "Producing original material has always seemed the logical thing to do. I kept writing. Studying and honing my skills. I have a catalog approaching 200 songs." The sheer size of his catalog was enough to catch the attention of Bay Area Producer Scotty "One Drop" Roberts. The quality of the music was what sealed the deal. They began collaborating and over the course of a couple years were able to forge a sound. Currently Monti is playing in and around San Francisco and Northern California.
Bill Summers of Summer's Heat has expressed interest in joining the line up, along with Jay Lane of Bob Weir and Ratdog, Scotty "One Drop" Roberts and James "Jimbo" Boyington. We'll keep you up to date with the goins on! Peace!!!
Jay Lane, Scott Robers, James "Jimbo" Boyington and Monti wowed the audience at Terrapin and caused a stir with many of the staff. With Scotty leading the band at the congas and Jay laying down the fat beats the way he's known to do the music soared into night as the sun set over the hills of the marina. They have been asked to return and return they shall. Stay tuned for the next date!
