Biography
Soulful, passionate and transparent are a few words that come to mind when you think of singer-songwriter Richard Hollis. His personality, sincerity and music are one in the same and that shows with each lyric and verse he pens. Hollis was born in Houston, Texas where he first discovered his love for music while playing drums at the age of 5 in his dad's pentecostal church. He later found his love for singing while in jr. high school at the age of 14. In 1999 he and his group left Houston for "The Big Apple" seeking a record deal. While in Manhattan this pursuit would take a divine turn that was all orchestrated by God. Richard, knowing that his calling was much more than the dream of secular fame he was chasing, was lead to walk away from the genre all together and rededicate his life, soul and gift to his now Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
After taking a break from music and soaking in the Word of God, he accepted his calling into the ministry and was ordained as an Elder in 2003 by The Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop G.E. Patterson. In 2007 he was lead to start an independent record label, True Light Recordings and in 2008 received the Best New Artist Award from The Texas Gospel Announcers Guild. In 2011 his single You Will Never Find was voted Best New Indie Single and won a lead spot on the Oasis Inspirational Radio Sampler CD.
Through the calling of ministry Richard has been blessed to share the platform with r&b crooner Howard Hewitt, Stellar award nominee Chester D.T. Baldwin, traditional gospel recording group Endurance and national spoken word artist Baritone. He has opened for contemporary gospel recording artists Kim Burrell, Gary Mayes & Nu Era, James Fortune & FIYA and GMA’s Dove award nominee Brian Courtney Wilson.

If you ever though what would a gospel sermon mixed with a soulful vocal and a neosoul vibe would sound like, singer-songwriter Richard Hollis just might give you your answer. Awaiting his set to begin, I was a little skeptical about what I was about to hear eventhough a good friend invited me to come and hear this new artist from the southside of Houston. I could tell the crowd was waiting in anticipation for the headliner, but when Richard Hollis stepped on stage he proved that what he had to offer was much more than just being an opening act.
From his opening intro Hollis' supporters sent the atmosphere into another level when he stepped on stage. The moment he open his mouth and finished the first line of his opening verse I knew what all the hype was about. It was about something that is missing on mainstream radio today and what true music listeners long to hear from an artist in this day and time... transparency. Richard's voice defines soul. His tone, delivery and passion almost takes you back to the Motown era where the male singers had a deep-resonating texture to their voices. I was drawn in immediately.
After standing through his entire 15 minute set, my friend who had invited me turned and asked, what did I think. I was speechless because I had not experienced gospel music in such a way before. His tracks puts you in an Anthony Hamilton kind of mood but when you listen at the lyrics and the ministry that this urban preacher delivers through his music, you know that he is a seasoned veteran and in due time he will get his shot to minister to the masses. Remember the name Richard Hollis. Check out his new ep titled Brighter Days that will be avaialble on iTunes and all digital outlets on July 15, 2014.
