(Missoula Current) Music is back at the Top Hat and a lot of it is free. The folks at Logjam Presents are bringing in locals, along with lesser-known bands on the weekends for their Groove Concert Series, which looks to showcase the vibrant music scene in our state.
The series kicked off with Rootz Within, a reggae band that formed while living in Hawaii but is currently based in Minnesota. Their music combines rock, funk and improvisations with the reggae foundation.
There is a feel of the islands both Carribean and Hawaiian. They are motivated to promote positivity and community through music, which with this band is delivered with catchy hooks and lyrics that come out of personal experience.
The song “Down the Rabbit Hole” came about when Jonah Bowe, lead singer and songwriter, fell ill battling infections and severe allergic reactions to medications. Cut off from touring, Bowe was forced to focus on writing lyrics.

When times are difficult, we can't ignore it but we do have the choice to succumb to the pain or rise up and create a positive. The music makes it easier to be uplifted and find that positive.
This perhaps is the greatest blessing that reggae has given to the world of music. Rootz Within is on a path of spreading this positive message through their music.
Reggae has always been a joyous rhythm bringing lyrics about difficult times to a positive place.
This was the perfect band to begin the free Groove Concert Series. Between now and mid-December, the Top Hat will host 10 more shows including Bozeman's Americana bluegrass Cactus Cuts, Jacob Rountree, Mudlside Charley and Warpony.

DETROIT LAKES — A free, all-ages concert at Detroit Mountain is set for Saturday, Aug. 20, starting at 2 p.m.
The first band to take the stage will be Foxby, followed by Pat Lenertz at 3:30 p.m. and the Detroit Lakes-based headliner, Rootz Within , at 4:30 p.m.
The event is a CD release party for “Incrementum,” the newest album from Rootz Within, which offers 13 original songs.
Rootz Within has been actively touring much of this year. The stop in Detroit Lakes is a brief visit before they head out to perform more than 20 shows before October’s end.
Ryan Enberg (bass guitarist and lyricist) said concert-goers can expect a summer island vibe at the Detroit Mountain concert. In addition to the proven catalog of crowd-pleasing tracks from past work, songs from the new album will be played.
“Incrementum” was created by Engberg, Jonah Bowe (singer and songwriter), Tyler Renney (vocalist and guitarist), Scott Thompson (drummer) and Anita Cargiuolo (percussion, djembe and vocalist).
The music has reggae undertones that are mixed with a variety of other styles that give the album a familiar, yet unique presence.
Lyrically, the 27-year-old son of Nathan and Teresa Bowe of Detroit Lakes, said his favorite song on the new album is called, “ Down the Rabbit Hole .”
“It’s about going through the toughest times that I’ve ever gone through in my life,” he said. “I had massive health issues.”
Before falling ill and having to battle infections, severe allergic reactions to medications and immobility, Rootz Within was booking upwards of 80 shows annually. Bowe was cut-off from touring and performing as he recovered. During that time he focused on writing lyrics.
When Bowe was healthy and the band returned to full-force, the songs began to flow.
Engberg noted “ Babylon is Burning ” took maybe 30 minutes to write. After playing a bass line, it was quickly matched with a guitar and melody.
“We were exploring ideas and that song fell together really quick,” he said.
When the band had a dozen or so songs to pick from, they scheduled a recording session at the famed Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The studio has produced dozens of hit albums and provides a house on-site for the band.
“The studio is set up in the woods with a flowing river,” Bowe said. “It’s beautiful.”
Being close to the Twin Cities also opened opportunities for collaborations with friends in the metropolitan area, some of which stopped by for guest spots on “Incrementum.”
The studio had its house engineer, Nick Tveitbakk, work with the band’s engineer, Sam Licari of Mankato, Minnesota, to mix each song to create the most robust version for the album.
Bowe said the band is “very proud” of their work and are eager to provide a great concert for their hometown crowd.

Rootz Within returns to the studio and the stage to share their sophomore album, Incrementum.
“The album is a reflection of multiple things myself and the band went through over the past few years, ” shared Jonah Bowe. “The recording process was a lot of fun and really gave us a chance to experiment and grow as people and musicians.”
Jonah Bowe is the lead vocalist and guitarist of Rootz Within. He performs alongside Tyler Renney, Scott Thompson, Anita Cargiuolo, and Ryan Engberg.
Incrementum was released on June 30 and features 13 new tracks. The album leans into the band’s rock elements more than previous releases, but still showcases Rootz Within’s recognizable reggae sound.
The band posted on Facebook that the album title, “incrementum,” is Latin for growth. They felt that it encompassed the band’s collective experience since its last release in 2018, Aloha Aina.
“We spent a lot of time on it and it means a lot to us. We just hope people enjoy it and it gives them a deeper look into life and the different things we all go through,” said Jonah Bowe.
Fans can catch Rootz Within at various shows over the next month. Their hometown album release party will take place in Detroit Lakes, MN on August 20 at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area. The show is free and open to all ages!
Highly anticipated by all is their third appearance at the space-themed event, Galactic Get-Down Music Festival, in New Richmond, WI!
Galactic Get-Down is scheduled to take place on August 27, 28 and 29 at River’s Edge Campground. The 6th annual festival is co-hosted by Space Monkey Mafia and Dead Larry. Rootz Within will walk on the Moon Stage on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Music lovers seeking something out of the ordinary and uplifting can head to Ocean's Bar and Grill from 8 to 1 pm tonight to hear the five-piece, alternative-reggae band "Rootz Within." Band members from Minnesota, now living on Hawaii Island, perform uplifing jam songs in hopes of spreading a positive message through music, culture and friendship Their mission is to make an impact on today's world through inspiring audiences with their performance art.
Rootz Within is a fusion of two musical groups who came together for a project and, ultimately through their Minnesota roots, came together to create their own fusion sound.
Shea Volker, who plays drums, and Ryan Engberg, who plays bass, were in a funk rock trio that had been touring about the Midwest and Rocky Mount regions of the mainland and had just released their first album when the third member of the trio quit in August 2015.
Jonah Bowe and Tyler Renney (singers/guitarists) along with Anita Cargiuolo (djembe) spent the summer of 2015 playing acoustic shows at several Minnesota music festivals (as) a different band. By coincidence, both bands were scheduled to perform at this same Wisconsin festival.
"Shea and I were contracted to run sound at one of the stages at this festival in addition to our own set," says Engberg. "Since we suddenly found ourselves without a band member and we'd improvised together before, we asked Jonah, Tyler and Anita if they were interested in playing our set with us. Intrigued with the idea of having a full rhythm section, they agreed."
"Both sets went so smoothly, we knew we were on to something and invited them to play the festivals and shows we already had booked for the rest of the year," said Volker.
Bowe was a regular visitor to Hawaii Island and invited the others to join him for FlowFest in Kalapana in 2016. After FlowFest, the band played several shows together on the island and decided to commit to each other as the new band, "Rootz Within."
"Music has been such a positive tool each of us in this band has relied on to get through different elements of life," Bowe said. "We are driven to give people that same tool in the same way we have received it. Our goal is that people leave our shows feeling hopeful, inspired and most importantly, positive! With so much negativity in the world, we feel that a positive perspective is necessary to survive and come out of this in a better place."
Since becoming Rootz Within, the band spent the rest of 2016 playing shows at venues and festivals across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota before returning to Hawaii to start the new year.
"We've had so much fun playing for crowds in Honokaa, Kona, Hilo, Pahoa, and at Uncle Robert's in Kalapana," said Engberg. "It's been such an honor and truly a privilege to play for so many who really listen and feel our message. You just don't see that so consistently on the mainland as we have discovered here."
With a primarily reggae sound, Rootz Within doesn't believe in performing only one genre of music. "We are five unique souls mixing our vast and different musical and personal backgrounds into this group, because we all have different roots within," said Bowe. "We are constantly trying to expand, improve and add as much as we can, because our roots are constantly growing and evolving. The one thing our shows have in common is leaving you feeling uplifted and inspired."
After tonight's show, the group performs at La Hiki Ola in Pahoa on April 8; Hilo Town Tavern on April 21; and The Landing in Honokaa on April 22 before heading to the mainland for shows in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The sounds of Reggae, Ska, and Rock music will be filling the air in Milaca, MN, as the city prepares for the 1st Annual Reggae, Ska and Rock Music Festival. Sponsored by Gopie Goats, LLC, this event promises to be a celebration of original music from some of the Midwest's most talented bands.
On August 11th, VIP ticket holders will have access to a pre-party. This VIP event promises to be an intimate and unforgettable experience.
On August 12th, the main event will take place at the Rec Park Bandshell in Milaca, MN, featuring a lineup of incredible bands that are sure to get the crowd moving and grooving. The scheduled performers include Dred I Dread (Reggae, Ska), Space Monkey Mafia (Ska), Rootz Within (Reggae), Push & Turn (Reggae), Skaelectric Company (Ska), Lars Nelson Band (Rock), Of Two Lions (Reggae/ Rock), and DJ Baile.
In addition to the fantastic music, the festival offers access to over 14 miles of hiking and biking trails and scenic woodlands, allowing festival-goers to fully immerse themselves in the music and nature.
