FROM STEVE:
“Toots Thielemans showed me a lot on the guitar that I found invaluable. He was a type of mentor to me. I’ve thanked him many times since because he did not have to share what he knows with another guitarist.”... Steve Blum ..from Scott Yanow interview 2017
Acoustic and Electric Master guitarist Stephen Blum’s career has taken him around the world with some of the biggest names in jazz and popular music. He has appeared at many top music venues and festivals such as The Montreal Jazz Festival, Maine Festival of the Arts, The Great American Music Hall, Yoshi’s Jazz Club (SF), Cape Cod Jazz Festival, The French Quarter Festival (New Orleans),Smalls Jazz Club (NYC), Wall Street Jazz Festival, SESC Concerts Sao Paulo, Brazil, Snug Harbor, New Orleans and the Portland Performing Arts Center, Portland, Maine. Stephen Blum was also honored by the San Francisco Bay Jazz Society by a unanimous vote to perform with his own group at the Milestones Jazz Club, one of the city’s top performance venues. (Central Park and Madison Square Garden with Peggy Lee)The Troubadour (Los Angeles).
Not only is Stephen Blum a truly legendary jazz guitarist, but he was also one of the few true pioneers of the fusion of jazz and rock with the 1969 Vanguard Recording “The Masters of Deceit- Hensley's Electric Jazz Band & Synthetic Symphonette. “The Masters of Deceit played a strong set with guitarist Steve Blum especially impressive.” (Fred Kirby, Billboard Magazine) However the quote from Jazz Master Toots Thielemans simply says it all: “A gifted guitarist.”
Stepehn Blum has deep roots in this music. He was born in New York City and began playing professionally at age fifteen. Less than a year later, he started taking guitar lessons from Lawrence (Larry) Lucie who passed on to Steve the secret soul of playing. Lucie, a remarkable New York jazz and rhythm guitarist played and recorded with Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong and Benny Carter, to name a few. While attending the University of Miami, Steve went out on the road to perform and record with singer Peggy Lee, during her late 1960s-early 1970s Capitol Records sojourn. He is also an important contributor to James Gavins' accaimed biography of Peggy Lee published in 2014( See the News Section) While with Peggy, he played such important venues as Central Park concerts and Madison Square Garden. He has also performed with music legends Louis Bellson, Toots Thielemans, Joe Williams.
During the 1970’s Steve served as musical director for Morgana King performing at such legendary venues as The Troubadore in Los Angeles. Steve’s recording work included sessions at Criteria Through the years, Blum has played with greats like Latin jazz legend Carlos "Patato" Valdez, renowned post-bop musicians like multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, bassist Cecil McBee, Nelson Symonds and jazz organist Dr. Lonnie Smith. Trumpeter, Randy Brecker, a friend and collegue, holds Steve's playing in high regard, " I've always respected Steve Blum's playing. His harmonic ideas are amazing."
In 2011, Stephen released his debut album as leader, entitled “Gottschalks’ Last Dance” The album is the result of Blum’s extensive “hands on” explorations of the music of the Americas, and features jazz and blues from the United States, a reggae- style tune based upon a theme by American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and a classic Haitian song in which Steve plays the cuatro, a native Puerto Rican stringed instrument. The CD also contains compositions by the great Brazilian composers Toninho Horta, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Hermeto Pascoal, as well as his own composition, “The Stream”, a New York style jazz and Latin hybrid. Blum says “the recording “attempts to weave all these styles mentioned into a musical quilt.” His idea was to connect the musical streams that flow between the Americas – through cities like Rio de Janeiro, Kingston, New Orleans and New York.
Stephen Blum resides in the New York City Metro area, where he teaches and freelances. His latest project, The Molecular Organ Trio, is a soulful fusion of Latin, blues and jazz styles using the talents of Akiko Tsuruga http://www.akikojazz.com on Hammond B3 and Jason Brown(Joey De Francesco's drummer) on drums.
More about STEVE BLUM: Performing on acoustic and electric guitars, as well as the Puerto Rican cuatro, he can coax many sounds from his instruments. “The Stream,” for example, has a very fluid and dreamy quality. A Thelonious Monk bebop composition, “Bright Mississippi,” is presented with plenty of twang of the slide guitar… Like Monk, the rendition displays a copious amount of personality and technique … Throughout this CD, he is right on, emphasizing his astute understanding of the evolution of jazz music and his own personal vision…Stephen Blum is a remarkable musician. “ -Joe Ross, Roots Music Report, CDInsight

May 22 at 3:54am · Should you happen to be in the vicinity of Indiana, PA this coming Saturday, May 27 - and even if you aren't - check out this page on a beautiful jazz guitarist, Steve Blum, whom Peggy Lee discovered in 1966. You can hear her introduce him on the album of her 1968 Copa act, "Two Shows Nightly." He is a burning musician who went on to make quite an impact as fusion was budding; his sensitivity on ballads knocked Peggy out. How I wish I could be there. “This is a trio definitely worth catching for a dynamic performance. As far as guitarists goes, Steve Blum is not a household name, but he should be. … jaw dropping “
—Saul Addison, Time Out NY, March 2017
More about STEVE BLUM:
At that point in time, Steve’s favorite jazz guitarists were Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery and Tal Farlow. “Toots Thielemans showed me a lot on the guitar that I found invaluable. He was a type of mentor to me. I’ve thanked him many times since because he did not have to share what he knows with another guitarist.”
During that period, Steve Blum recorded some of the earliest jazz/rock fusion, being well featured on The Masters Of Deceit, an album for the Vanguard label by Tom Hensley’s Electric Jazz Band & Synthetic Symphonette. “It was an early progressive rock band. We played dances at the University of Miami, had some gigs in Chicago and opened for Iron Butterfly. To this day, people still like our recording and some even want me to reform the band and play its music.
As time passed, Steve Blum became very active as a recording guitarist, appearing on many sessions while often being uncredited and sometimes not even getting to hear the final results. “I recorded with an orchestra for Teo Macero but I never heard how it came out or found out what it was for. I’ve been on many many recording sessions through the years but some of the most memorable ones were the ones that I did not get to appear on for one reason or another. During one period I was temporarily without a phone, I got a call on a friend’s phone to play on a James Brown record date but, by the time I got the message, it was already too late.” Among the notables who Steve did get the chance to work with were percussionist Carlos “Patato” Valdez, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, bassist Ceil McBee and organists Jack McDuff and Dr. Lonnie Smith. He spent periods working in Montreal, New Orleans and Los Angeles in addition to New York and had opportunities to visit much of the world.

Hello Steve,
I was so happy to meet you at Fat Cat. You just never know when your path is going to cross with family and I do consider us family! The Jazz and Blues world is losing so much talent and I am always inspired to get a chance to meet and hear artist's who keep the integrity of this amazing american art form alive!
I have had a chance to listen to the CD that you gave me and wanted to tell you that I was immediately transported to the area's that your music drew from. The latin influence and the Mississippi southern style were among my favorites. I am so impressed by the range to which you communicate through your instrument!
