Terrie Odabi's 2016 CD Release "My Blue Soul" Ranked
One of Living Blues Top 50 Blues Albums for 2016
Terrie Odabi, a Soul Blues sensation and recording artist, has captivated audiences globally with her mesmerizing voice and exceptional band. With seven Blues Music Award nominations, she stands as a prominent figure in the blues scene. Hailing from the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area, Terrie is a living testament to West Coast blues royalty.
Her upcoming album, set to release in the Spring of 2024, is eagerly awaited by fans worldwide.
“Terrie Odabi is easily the most dynamic blues and soul woman to have emerged in the Bay Area since Etta James came out of San Francisco’s Fillmore District in the Fifties. Terrie has a powerful set of pipes, writes terrific tunes, leads a kicking band and has onstage movements that perfectly match the rhythms of her material. Surely stardom awaits her.”
-Lee Hildebrand, contributor to the *San Francisco Chronicle, *East Bay News Group and *Living Blues Magazine"
It has been proclaimed that Terrie Odabi is nothing short of West Coast Blues Royalty. It has been written that she is “easily the most dynamic blues and soul woman to have emerged in the Bay Area since Etta James came out of San Francisco’s Fillmore District in the ’50s.” Only a singer with Odabi’s combination of power and finesse could hold her own amid those kinds of comparisons. What sets Odabi apart from so many of her peers are the different shades of hurt, longing, bliss, and depth she brings to the music. The distinguishable character of her voice rings out with a rousing revival of faith and reverence that has a drenching rejuvenation and sacred renascence complexity. Her abundant soul and improvisational prowess has made her a crucial contributor to today's Blues scene. Warmly embraced by Blues fans and peers alike, Terrie Odabi is one of the most respected talents in the Blues genre.

Just outlined the first intonation from his vocal cords, Terrie Odabi captivated the audience present on the fourth day of the Summer Jazz Festival 2015, which once past the storm last Saturday, was reunited around the stage and the tent inside the What happens the event
Odabi was carried away and entered into trance with the music, backed by its musicians - each one a master in its instrument -, the singer began thus a repertoire of the most varied, always in the line of the blues, that by continuous moments was fused With a soul that was hot and suggestive, but also dynamic, which in Terrie's physique found rhythm and seasoning.
In black and robustly sexy, the singer was not long in standing up, or else, applauding with all impetus, her music with various nuances was sometimes aggressive and in others so suggestive and romantic that the screams of the audience, Which at no time stopped being fully involved in the presentation.
And it is that Terrie took over the stage as a few singers, their musical arrangements caught with a contemporary blues sound, but reminiscent of the old school and the great performers, as when he made a meaningful and suggestive tribute to the "King of Rock" Elvis , Interpreting a slow and cadent version of classic "Hound Dog", that charmed the public.
Odabi left in Plaza de Armas one of the most remarkable performances so far in the Festival, impeccable band, powerful voice and overwhelming presence, all this added to ingenious and provocative lyrics installed in the genres blues and soul, which also have a lot to do with The best jazz in the world; The San Francisco native and winner of the Golden Gate Blues Society's International Blues Challenge, left the scene buried in applause and with her audience standing, corroborating her talent, why our Festival is definitely international.

Terrie Odabi has delved into a variety of musical genres over the past three decades. She did backgrounds locally for soul singers Brenda Vaughn and Rosie Gaines and sang jazz standards with saxophonist Jules Broussard and pianist Richardo Scales during the ’80s, contributed lead vocals to the all-women world-music percussion bands D’CuCKOO and Rhythmix in the ’90s, and reinvented herself as a neo-soul singer during the first decade of the present century.
Over the past couple of years, however, the Albany, Georgia–born, Oakland-based vocalist has found what is perhaps her true calling in the blues. The Golden Gate Blues Society sent her and her band to represent Northern California at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January 2014, and although she didn’t make it to the competition’s finals, the nonprofit society’s judges voted to send them back again this coming January.
“I don’t think there’s any music that has more soul than blues, besides gospel,” she says. “I always liked blues, but I never felt like I had a place in blues. I didn’t really know much about the blues culture, other than what was in the Bay Area, and it didn’t seem like it was thriving here.”
Odabi, who works as an employment specialist for disabled students between the ages of 14 and 22 at both Castlemont and Skyline high schools, recently released a CD titled Evolution of the Blues that’s made up of five of her own songs and a chilling rendition of Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying.” She uses her alternately breathy and wailing alto pipes with precise enunciation to cut to the core of her at-times erotic odes. “I can’t keep the old men from flirtin’ with me/I can’t keep the young men from hittin’ on me,” she oozes seductively on her hard-shuffling “I Can’t Keep” before telling listeners that “I only freak with my man.”
During appearances at Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco, the Fenix in San Rafael, and the Smoking Pig BBQ Company in Fremont, Odabi has maintained remarkable eye contact with her audiences, giving the uncanny illusion that she was looking directly at each customer. “I try to draw them into what is going on in front of them,” she explains.
Odabi will travel to Memphis in late January with her five-piece band, featuring the dynamic Mountain View guitarist Terry Hiatt this time around, and with her friend, veteran Oakland blues and soul singer-pianist Lady Bianca, who will be competing in the soloist category.
Odabi was disappointed but not devastated by her loss at last January’s International Blues Challenge. “I honestly believe God has a plan, and it wasn’t my time,” she says. “I feel in my spirit that music is what I’m supposed to be doing, and I try to take advantage of whatever opportunities are presented to me.”
As for her upcoming second go-round in Memphis, she says stoically, “I wanna make the best of whatever hand I’m dealt.”

Auto-Summary But Turre, who first heard Odabi when he wandered into Rassela's after a 2008 gig with Kenny Burrell at Yoshi's San Francisco, was immediately taken with the dynamic singer."In one word: soul," Turre says of Odabi. Originally hired to sing backup on a recording session, she ended up joining the band, which featured MIDI percussion instruments designed by Tina Blaine and Candice Pacheco."We were a big hit in Silicon Valley," Odabi says.
After a long and winding musical journey, Terrie Odabi has found a home in the blues.
An accomplished jazz singer, potent R&B performer and rhythmically dexterous world music explorer, Odabi has collaborated with top-shelf artists in an international array of traditions. In recent years, however, she has increasingly been impressed by the passionate regard offered by blues fans, a welcome she hasn't always felt in other styles.
"When I sang jazz, I often felt like I wasn't embraced," Odabi says. "I was a little too soulful. I always felt like I was too young for the blues, so I sang R&B for a long time, and it just seemed to fit."
Several years ago, she started including more blues in her shows, and discovered a devoted and discerning audience. More visible than ever around the Bay Area scene, the irrepressible Odabi performs Saturday at Cafe Stritch with veteran bluesman Alvon Johnson, whose searing guitar serves as a bracing foil for his smooth vocals.
Odabi also plays the Fillmore Jazz Festival on July 5, and holds forth at the Club Fox blues jam on July 9. San Francisco's premiere blues spot Biscuits and Blues presents her on July 17, and then Odabi returns to Stritch Aug. 7-9 with trombone star Steve Turre's reprise of his Rahsaan Roland Kirk tribute.
A frequent collaborator with Kirk before his death in 1977, Turre presented one of last year's most memorable shows with his homage to the legendary multi-instrumentalist (who often played several horns simultaneously). His band features the same prodigious cast as last year, with bassist Marcus Shelby, drummer Darrell Green, altoist Charles McNeal, pianist Matt Clark and one notable addition, Detroit reed star James Carter.
The presence of Odabi on the Stritch bandstand last year with Turre seemed puzzling before the gig, as all the other players were far more established. But Turre, who first heard Odabi when he wandered into Rassela's after a 2008 gig with Kenny Burrell at Yoshi's San Francisco, was immediately taken with the dynamic singer.
"In one word: soul," Turre says of Odabi. "Terrie really understands the blues, and jazz comes from the blues. Some people act too hip or too modern, and a lot of so-called jazz these days has no blues, has no Africa in it. Terrie knows about the source, and she always moves me."
Odabi grew up in East Oakland singing with her family. "That's what we did to pass the time," she says. "My mother always sang with us, my sisters and my brother. When the extended family got together, we always sang."
With the support of a doting aunt, she took singing lessons as a teenager, studying with lyric tenor John Patton Jr., who possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of African-American music. Attending Oakland's Fremont High, she took every opportunity to perform. Eventually, she found her way to the original Rassela's at Divisadero and California in San Francisco, and sat in with veteran saxophonist Jules Broussard. He ended up hiring her, a formative gig that lasted for about a year.
Her career took a turn when she joined the multicultural percussion combo D'CuCkoo, which combined traditional Latin American and West African rhythms with state of the art electronics. Originally hired to sing backup on a recording session, she ended up joining the band, which featured MIDI percussion instruments designed by Tina Blaine and Candice Pacheco.
"We were a big hit in Silicon Valley," Odabi says. "We played all the campus dedications for high tech firms, so we were really busy. It was very tribal. We often made lyrics up, and we very seldom sang a song with actual words."
When the group disbanded in 1998, Odabi joined an acoustic world percussion spinoff from D'CuCkoo called RhythMix. Led by San Jose Taiko drummer Janet Koike and percussion pioneer Carolyn Brandy, one of the first women to study the sacred Afro-Cuban bata drum, the group incorporated a vast array of rhythmic traditions.
"I played whatever they gave me, sang and danced and did all the choreography," Odabi says. "We all knew songs from different parts of the world, so we'd sing a Japanese song to an African rhythm, and just mix everything up."
When she left the band in 2004, Odabi was ready to start finding her own path. She recorded an EP, and is working on her first album, which could go a long way in spreading her reputation beyond the Bay Area. In the fall she'll be performing at the SFJazz Center with percussion master John Santos, who has presented a series of concerts there showcasing some of the Bay Area's undersung singers. That's a status that's unlikely to apply to Odabi for much longer.
