With Somber beauty and otherworldly seduction, The Palace of Tears fuses hypnotic electronics, heavily layered processed guitars and sultry vocals that captivate, creating an ethereal sonic amalgam that transcends temporal boundaries.
The duo’s unique alchemy draws upon musical influences as varied as post-punk, gothic rock, shoegaze, ambient drone, jazz, electronica, soundtracks and more. The Palace of Tears create their own sonic landscape full of haunting beauty - ghostly - evocative - sensual.
Both artists collaboratively bring to the table a plethora of diverse experiences in the creative performance world, with influences from theater, dance, circus, opera, and butoh. Vocalist Leah Darkling, a New Orleans native, brings a varied and textured approach to her singing and song writing, pulling from her many disciplines in the performing arts.
On a trek out to Europe, seeking broader horizons, it was in Berlin, Germany that she first met multi-instrumentalist Erick r Scheid. Interesting to note, the origin of this emotive title “The Palace of Tears” emerged from the historic city of Berlin, a building which served as the border crossing for those who said their farewells to loved ones as they passed from East to West Berlin, through the wall, not knowing when or if they may see their loves ever again…
Erick’s project of 10 years, Mercury's Antennae, in which he produced three albums as guitarist-engineer-electronics, performed at Schauspielhaus in Leipzig for Wave-Gotik-Treffen. Later that same year a mingling of minds would begin, while also enduring a long distance relationship, and the duo ultimately created demos together. As time passed and the chemistry and alchemy of a creative partnership was budding, Erick made the bold and daring decision to relocate from the green shimmery forests of Portland, OR to the eerie and mysterious southern depths of New Orleans, Louisiana to begin anew, shedding the previous skin of his former project.
It is here in New Orleans that The Palace of Tears came to fruition, with the subsequent release of their debut album, "Of Ruination". In eerie fashion, the album spans a period of utter decadence in New Orleans, following the entire Mardi Gras season, with it's masks, costumes, revelry, debauchery, and fantastic indulgence, only to have this swiftly shift into deep isolation, despair, and loneliness brought about through the pandemic.
Leah's vocals create a swoon of dream-felt caresses into the heart of the human psyche, weaving and layering lullabies of sensual longing into each moment, while Erick's dense swirl of ghost - layered guitars and atmospheric electronics conjure a sonic spell of aural mist to soothe the listener into its lush ambience.

This campaign is going amazingly well, and we are so inspired to build more on this project.
We would love to raise enough funds to get vinyl pressed, and help cover the costs of touring in support of this next release. There is no pledge too big or too small. We really want people to know that even if it's just 5 dollars, it means so much more. It's the gesture of support, that you like what we do and are giving us a high 5, (no pun intended lol), or a nod of acceptance and encouragement. It really means so much to us!

‘Of Ruination’ is pitched as ‘seven tracks of somber beauty and otherworldly seduction’, and the New Orleans duo consisting of Erick r. Scheid and Leah Darkling promise ‘hypnotic electronics, heavily layered processed guitars and sultry vocals’. And they certainly deliver, with a spellbinding set that’s rich in ethereal glory, with Leah’s vocals dominating and defining their sound in a truly unique way, with the closest comparisons being Jarboe and Zola Jesus.
‘Thy Womb Full of Black Nectar’ may be a shade pretentious in both title and content, but the majesty of the soaring operatic vocal over a glacial synth-led instrumentation that marks a clear lineage to The Sisters of Mercy’s ‘Floodland’ is truly hypnotic. Similarly, ‘masque L’Intrigue’ is a sweeping current of coldwave, drawing on Depeche Mode and ‘Disintegration’ era Cure.
‘Tears of the Moon’ is minimal in terms of instrumentation as icy synths and flange-coated guitar spirals layer like mist on frost while a mechanoid drum thumps away characterless – and Leah’s voice transcends earthly bounds as it drifts into the stratosphere. Elsewhere, ‘Cold Dead Skin’ broods darkly in a style tooted in late 90s second wave goth. The title track takes things to another level: while drawing together all of the album’s defining elements it adds bold bursts of grainy guitars, overdriven and with a heavy metallic sheen. Cinematic synths shimmer serpentine shapes and the expansive, repetitive motifs are reminiscent of The Sisterhood’s ‘Gift’.

In the midst of a busy week, which was made even more difficult by a short illness, this album has been a nice respite from the chaos of 2020.
It’s another of those, I have no idea what to expect as the biography lists a 100 different styles, kind of albums. But once you actually listen to it, all of the listed genres do make a lot of sense… so go listen to the album whilst reading the review…
The album begins with a tribal take on an ethereal, dark ambient style. But once the 4 minute instrumental ends, you still don’t know which direction the album will take… enter, vocalist, Leah, aka L.V. Darkling.
On, Thy Womb Full of Black Nectar her voice is like that of a dark angel… beautifully seductive, but the darker side very evident… I have no idea if she’s had any classical training, but it sure as hell sounds like it.
You can now start to add all the extra layers… be it Gothic, Darkwave, Neo-Classical, Post Punk etc… there’s also a bit of 80s influenced electronica mixed in there as well and just the tiniest bit that sounds like Lisa Gerrard with Dead Can Dance… I say tiniest, it’s on the albums longest track, the 15 minute epic, Ruination… but it is only on that track.
But overall, the album just glides along, very beautifully, or maybe gracefully would be a better word to use. So if you need some time out, light the candles, open a bottle of red wine and stick this album on… job done.

Translation: A new sound, as the darkwave duo The Palace Of Tears has unveiled their debut album Of Ruination. Bleak beauty and alien seduction were cast in 7 songs, in which we hear hypnotic electronics, layered guitar work and sultry voices. Ghostly sensually, Leah and Erick set up an atmospheric opulence with themes such as love and death and the search for truth in a world full of grief and the desire for connection. Leah's deeply theatrical voice undoubtedly gives all the character to the sound. Of Ruination is already available digitally and soon a limited CD edition will be released.
