The brith of JazzHop is a case study for making a musical connection via the internet and social media. Brooklyn MC, Traum Diggs and Buenos Aires producer, Gas-Lab have used Skype, Twitter, Gmail, Facebook and Dropbox to create an album and develop a kinship. While searching for new music and producers a dear friend of Traum Diggs, Wendy Wu, shared some music from a producer named Gas-Lab and he immediately noticed and fell in love with the musicality of his compositions. "I knew this was an element that was lacking in the music I had created to this point and I knew this was the sound I wanted to further develop" says Diggs. Upon further research, Diggs discovered that Gas-Lab is not just a beatmaker, he is a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, cello, keys) from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who has toured worldwide as a musician with several bands. "I reached out to him via his Facebook page but never heard back from him." After discussing the setback with Wendy, she reached out to Gas-Lab “en español” on behalf of Traum Diggs and he responded saying he loved the work and would like her to introduce them via email. Wendy made the proper introductions and the artists went to work immediately on one song, which became two, which became the album JazzHop.
Traum Diggs made the following statement regarding the album:
"The project is about the global power and influence of hip-hop music and how it can be used to unify cultures, continents and languages. We dedicate JazzHop to lovers of jazz, lovers of hip-hop, and to the pioneers who came before us. We conspired to inspire a rebirth of a jazz influenced hip-hop sound on the dawn of an electronic wave that is poised to dominate the genre for the foreseeable future. Maybe we’re brave; maybe we’re stupid, only time and our fans will tell."
